What an awesome place! Got some cracking images from this one.
But... the shoot wasn't without its problems!
Thornbury Men's Shed get a lot of items donated to them, and they restore what they can and sell it on to pay for the premises etc., but they don't do camera repairs currently. So they have a box of old cameras, which I took a look at and borrowed one that I thought might be interesting.
It's a Kodak Brownie No 2A, c. 1920-1924, shooting 116 film. You find these old things everywhere, I tend to ignore them when they come up, and I almost moved on from this one.
But... that 116 was a BIG film, wider than 120. And the film gate is 11.5cm wide (high? long?), which means this camera, if i can get it working reliably, will shoot huge 6x11 negatives! Big wide panoramic shots.
So I gave it a clean, and tried my luck!
More to come from that camera.
I also shot on some more reliable cameras here - the Bronica ETRS shooting Kodak Tri-X 400, for some lovely black and white shots. I decided to push it to 800 for this shoot, to give me a stop more light to play with indoors. Results were good, but not great. That push really cranked up the contrast, on a film which isn't lacking contrast to start with,
Then I shot Portra 400 in the Rolleiflex SLX. That faired pretty well, happy with those results! I also put a roll of expired Portra 400NC through it, but you'll notice that these images didn't make the cut! Pretty poor results, not enough light for an expired film in there. So be it!
I also... because you can never take too many cameras, right?... took along the last of my Zebra Dry Plate Tintypes, and a few Zebra Dry Plates (glass).
Total disaster with the Dry Plate Tintypes, but the glass plates came out well.
Watch out for the hidden easter egg in this one! A tease of something coming very soon!!
Drop me a comment with your thoughts on the images, the technique, the place, the people, whatever!

I love this content. Such a wholesome thing to see older gentleman form these groups. So necessary. The loneliness some older men live in is completely devastating, so to see these guys do their thing is awesome, and I think you did them justice. I would also drop dry tine type!

Totally agree, such a great place, and so needed. When the time comes I'll be heading straight down there to join up! Can't think of anything better to do in my retirement, if indeed I do ever "retire", than to potter about fixing things! Really enjoyed meeting them all and shooting the breeze, the photos were a bit of a bonus! I'll be doing them some prints and will drop them off next week.

I liked all of this but the colour images impressed me the best

Thank you! Yes the colour ones came out well didn’t they? The internal metering did its job! However, I also shot a roll of expired Portra 400NC and there’s a good reason this images didn’t make the cut!!!

Thanks! Definitely go get yourself some 120 and start using it again! You'll wonder how you ever did without the extra resolution!

It could be that ISO 2 under artificial lights is very different from ISO 2 under natural light. There are films with typical ISO values that have this same behavior, though can't really think of any in black-white.

That’s definitely true, for sure. Outside the UV light adds to the visible (measurable) light, giving you more exposure. However, the glass plates and the dry plate tintypes should both be the same orthochromatic emulsion, and I did them both indoors! I didn’t move the camera! No clue what happened!
@ThingOfSome
@ThingOfSome 5 месяцев назад
@@the120ist Ah, okay, if they have the same emulsion, then this would be harder to explain. But perhaps it is the difference in reflectivity of glass versus tin? If you look up the reflectance online, tin has a very different spectral curve, and is overall less reflective.
@the120ist
@the120ist 5 месяцев назад
@@ThingOfSome I'm not 100% on them being the same emulsion, I need to check that, but I would guess the they are. If I'm right on that, then the only thing left, if emulsion, light and exposure are identical, would be the plate itself. Once developed, the tintypes have a more glossy finish to the exposed surface, whereas the developed and exposed areas of the glass are matte... maybe there is some extra chemical addition to the tintypes.... I shall investigate!

Nic I plan on contacting you, I'll be sending you a camera care package. I've been thinking about sending it to you for a while. I hope it helps you and your channel. Cheers Mate.

Thank you, that’s very kind. You don’t have to, of course, you watching my vids is enough for me! But anything photography related will always be warmly received!
