Don graduated from Stanford University with a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. He then went to work at AT&T Bell Labs where he was part of the team that designed the world’s first 32-bit microprocessor. He then moved to Silicon Valley where he helped launch the start-up company, VLSI Technology. Then after 15 years in the tech world, Don quit his job to become a stand-up comedian. @glennbaer1453 10 месяцев назад
Unless they're bidding on a custom software job. Since the software isn't written yet, no one really knows how long it will take (and therefore how much the work will cost). The salespeople ask the engineers how long it will take. The engineers reply with a pretty decent estimate of the amount of time it takes to write the code, but they don't factor in debugging and paperwork. Sales then reduces engineering's already low estimate to underbid the competition.

@@glennbaer1453That's why I always multiplied my estimate by 3. We do tend to think about how long it will take to write, but then you have to test it and fix any mistakes. So I mistakenly believed that 22/7 is the exact value of π , and I felt better than the other kids because I used 22/7 while they used 3.14 . I didn't know back then that π is irrational, and that 3.14 and 22/7 are about just as equally (in)accurate. 😅

@@mjolnir3309 What I meant is that it wasn't really a better approximation than 3.14 , but that I didn't realize it; I believed that my calculations were being exact. Working with decimals always seemed "non-exact" to me, so using 22/7 and writing answers as fractions of integers gave me a sense of getting at the "perfect" answer. That was until highschool, where I learned that π is irrational, and from then on I just kept π as a symbol in the outcome of calculations (unless specifically asked for a decimal approximation).

For a mathematician, the value of π() depends on what you put into it: π(1) = 0 π(2) = 1 π(3) = 2 π(4) = 2 π(5) = 3 π(6) = 3 π(7) = 4 π(8) = 4 π(9) = 4 π(10) = 4 π(11) = 5 π(12) = 5 π(13) = 6 π(14) = 6 ... π(100) = 25 π(101) = 26 etc.

An an engineer, fabricator, machinist, and science enthusiast I can confirm all of these are accurate (well, the engineer would ask what the tolerance is then give you a number within that tolerance of pi....ish). Except for the sales guys.....thats not my bag and I have no idea how they can get you pi at 2.6 but I can tell you with absolute certainty if that is what you're paying its not a pi that passed final QA....ish.😉
