That's funny - even though I'm sure you are paraphrasing, I have actually seen instruction which basically says what you wrote - "Hey guys, today on my channel I told this kid to follow through with his index straight down into the sound hole" - and I'm always complaining about that type of thing. Thanks for your interesting and detailed comment. I still believe that muting adds another movement to the process which cannot be done fast - slow practice should imo be done in a way that truly impacts on the fast playing. I think of it like gears - as long as the fingers stay in more or less the same shape, then as you go faster the fingers move relaxed within the distance possible for that speed, like moving to a smaller gear wheel when necessary to go faster (the fingers must remain in the same shape but in a natural and unforced way, the same way that gear wheels are the same shape just different sizes). Are you saying you play guitar without nails? I used to bite my nails when very young and started playing without nails but with a different finger position (straighter fingers) than now. Very little nail is needed though for flamenco, especially in the way of playing as I describe in this video - too long nails would add stress to the movement and be almost impossible.
