He is literally Dragon ball's equivilent of JL's Martian Manhunter, a cool ass endearing character and my favorite who can't catch a break in being depicted any stronger than he is because he ain't the main character or his rival anymore.
@@stephenquinn7931 Not really, for every MH that can take on Supes, there is a superman stronger than MH. Worse case scenario even weaker Supes just takes a five second sun dip and blitzes him like SSJ2 Gohan did to the Cell Jrs. MH is generally depicted behind Superman(Goku), Wonder Woman(Vegeta) and Flash(Gohan) in terms of power. If anyone's Batman it'd be Krillin since he's all tech and no strength.
Considering how powerful piccolo was after merging with Kami, and getting ways stronger in the hyperbolic time chamber, he definitely has been screwed over in dragon ball super.

@Alex Mercer But 17 and Piccolo can get along. As well as Piccolo could be Gohan's Vegeta in a way. More amicable and with respect. But helping each other get strong.
@Alex Mercer yeah. I think they should have kept gohan as a superhero. 17 seems to have gotten to keep his sense of humour. Maybe it switched to be more quiet and sardonic but he still has that going for him.
@Alex Mercer that reminds that piccolo did try to save 17. He understood Cell was the bigger threat. And took some serious damage trying to protect him.
With the exception of Goku, Vegeta, and perhaps Future Trunks, every other main character has lost their importance. Not just Piccolo, but Gohan, little Trunks & Goten, and Boo have all gone the way of Yamcha and Tenshinhan. In other words, Piccolo and the others have all been Yamcha'd.
Trunks and Goten contributed to characters like Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu losing their relevance. They're not victims. They're part of the problem too. A problem that started in Z and has just gotten worse in Super.
@@Renagade2332 Yeah, that is true. Though I believe that's been happening since the beginning of Dragon Ball. Toriyama will keep using a character for as long as they're useful to their roles in the story, until he creates a new character to take over that role. E.g. Tenshinhan was the first serious member of the team, until he was replaced by Piccolo. And then Piccolo was gradually replaced by Vegeta as the serious fighter. It seems to be Toriyama's style to usually create new characters to fill the roles instead of fleshing out old characters.
@@beauferret5414 I have read somethere, that toriyama had a different DBZ in mind at the beginning and that he had to change somethings because the fans wouldn't like it.. so his first thought where, that Son Goku should have stayed dead and that Son Gohan would become the main protagonist, but because Son Goku was a fan favorite, they couldn't let him stay dead
I'd say right now only Son Goku, Whis, and King Zen really matter. None of the other angels except for the archangel know half as much as Whis when it comes to MUI and King Zen basically dictates the story. The bad guys don't really matter because Son Goku by design will always overcome them ever since Toriyama decided to not have Son Gohan take over as protag.
Piccolo: *trains and fights for 7+ years* *Loses to frieza henchman* Android 17: *Does nothing since Cell saga* *comparable to ssj blue Goku* Master Roshi: *Does nothing since before Gohan was even born* *Can keep up with Jiren*
Dragon Ball super isn't canon for me, because it doesn't make sense at all. Piccolo was stronger than a SSJ 1 he should have no problem to kill all henchman of frieze in an instant
It can't, however. Nail outright stated that he would give his life and just surrender his power to Piccolo. Nail is dead, it's just that his power and memory remain with Piccolo. As for God, when he fused with Piccolo, it was much the same deal.
@@lunattt4274 Yes, but that was Piccolo accessing Nail's memories and voice. It wasn't really Nail speaking himself - although there are hints here and there that maybe, Nail is still somehow there, though not in any way as presented in the Abridged show.
Piccolo is the smartest of the group, he should have a strategist role, and should merge with shen-long, and on that note, yamcha should be the trickster. Best way to make all these character relevent again, is to make an anti-saiyan race and fighting style, something malleable like Hamon from Jojo. Gohan would also be benefited as he would be able to use both styles
+Spandan Dasgupta I agree with Piccolo, but if Piccolo would remained side stepped, I would have hoped a non-ultimate Gohan would have taken that roll, by being schooled by the strategist fighter himself, with some real life experiences to give some interesting twists in his fighting style. Nobody ever combined the martial arts of (real) Chi with some real scientific principles in DB so far. To bad super couldn't do anything else than bring back plot-device-strong Gohan. I don't agree with your solution for Yamcha though, while Yamcha was always a good kid at hearth, and it remained unclear (so far I know) where he learned his Wolf Fang Fist, I wouldn't really call him inventive. Not at all on the level kid and teen Goku where. Come on, Goku was able to out trick a seasoned fighter like Jackie Chun, and might even be able to out-trick his own Master Roshi if ever pitted against him.
@@Tuning3434I agree dude, Gohan had such potential, even in his SaiyanMan phase. That could have been an arc of Gohan taking the position of champion of humanity from Satan. I know Goku was smart and innovative in the start, but he grew dumber, Yamcha was supposed to be the Han Solo character(atleast that's what I thought during the original Dragon Ball) so for Z, he should go back to his bandit ways and use cheap tricks in fight, like use camo, or throw dirt and such. It would have been a contrast to the honour horny saiyans. On that note, Bulma should already have made weapons which work on saiyans or freeza and such, considering especially that they get attacked by such things on a constant basis
@Ariston Garza I don't know, I would say the Tien vs. Teen Goku fight in DBs 23rd Tenka-Ichi Budoukai Saga more than proved how much multi-form and extra limbs are more a gimmick than a real power multiplier. I don't agree Tri-beam is an instant attack, it certainly wasn't in DB: Goku was caught mid-air before having learned flight, and the 2nd try he let it happen just to rub it into Tien's mind that Goku would be the superior fighter this time around. If I remember the Saiyan saga correctly it caught Nappa off-guard, and I think it was the same for Cell. I don't know how and why Tri-beam was that effective against Cell, but both Goku and Nappa had no real problems at all to just take it. In the end, Tri-beam (again) almost killed Tien, while it still was only an inconvenience for Semi-perfect Cell, effectively countered by Cell by just waiting out till Tien would have killed himself (for the 2nd time).
That's why I wasn't bothered by the absurd power boosts random old characters got, at least not on a base level. I WANT old characters to be relevant, and I absolutely despite the power creeping and artificial nonsense that is power scaling in dragon ball, so I want characters to become relevant again even if they're not that strong (in terms of artificial numbers) by being smarter and coming up with interesting ways to fight. Super completely fucked everything by just giving everyone higher numbers for no reason rather than have them find ways to be useful outside of that, but I did at least enjoy seeing Roshi being useful again for once, and Piccollo performing somewhat decently for someone whose power level got creeped this bad.
Sees thumbnail. Thinks of this scene from TFS DBZ Kai episode 3. Piccolo: You know who could use some character development? Trunks: Gohan. Tien: Gohan. Krillin: Gohan. Vegeta: Kakarot's brat. Piccolo: MEEEEEEEEEE! *Flies away.
Piccolo: kami we need to fuse also we're gonna kill some teenagers Popo: I did drugs this scene Kami: you had me with killing teenagers AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH
Just because he is a side character doesn't make him a bad character. His characteristics and contributions to the Z fighters team are something that could never be replaced.
See, that's what I'm talking about. Sure, anyone who just watched this video might think Piccolo is the new Yamcha. But if anyone wtched the series and analyzed the character, they would know that's far from true.
I have to think if they had dragon ball abridged, Piccolo would be a new Mazoku being with Piccolo Daimao in his head. I think that’s basically what Daimao did. Fused with his offspring as the base as he was pushing the egg out. That’s why Ma Jr is him but is stronger and why Kami didn’t die the moment Daimao blew up with a gaping hole in him.
Piccolo is my favourite character. Bar none. He had a good run up until the end of the Buu arc (even if Toriyama didn't want him to succeed) The reason be dipped down in Super? Gohan. No joke. Making piccolo a satellite character to Gohan ruined the character Edit: HAH, CALLED IT

Mr Lakiro At least piccolo’s character development wasn’t fucking diverted. This is why I never take vegeta fans seriously. His character just did a 180 and threw away all that development. It’s legit why I think piccolo has better character development than vegeta.

One piece is the opposite of DB. No one is forgotten and nearly everyone has a,part to play in the story. This is why I think OP is better than current DB.
My boy Piccolo has always been my favorite dude. A spooky guy born evil who slowly turns good, even sacrificing himself for his nemesis’s son. It was my first time seeing a character develop like that. Big Green deserves better.
Piccolo is my favorite character by a long shot and I hate how he's misused in the Buu saga and Super. Toriama could learn a thing from One Piece on supporting multiple characters.
I've never seen One Piece but I agree - the video author almost seems to think the characters are real and that Piccolo is unlucky and finds himself in unfortunate situation after unfortunate situation. In fact, it's because of the simplistic writing post-Cell saga, or perhaps earlier; there doesn't have to be one 'sideman' like the video insists. Goku is the main character and will always typically be the one who saves the day, but there used to be a genuine sense that the other characters played a huge part in helping him, or had their own part to play in defeating other villains. I liked the video but I think it's mostly nonsense: overly simplistic, one-dimensional writing has taken over DB and it's worse for it, though the latest Broly movie was an improvement since it showed that Goku needs Vegeta at least (to fuse in order to gain the power to defeat the antagonist).
You named 3 characters that never train. Saiyans should be mortal and trough training reached god ki, why a god shouldn't be able to reach god ki trough trainig? Oh right I forgot that the serie is not anymore "Dragonball" but is "Saiyans' Tales"
Piccolo needs to get a god form or something but he needs to be back. He was a badass villain in dragon Ball and his fight with Android 17 is one of the best. Overall I believe piccolo is a very well made character and deserves more.
@@newnamepending64 We could find out that some alternate universe had some god level namekians, an alternate timeline where namekians became the most powerful warrior race instead of saiyans, perhaps as a result of them going to war with saiyans and Frieza. There are ways to make this work.
Weird how akira has stated multiple times piccolo is his favorite character yet he keeps getting the short end of the stick. All the series has been doing lately is jerking goku, vegeta, and frieza. I find your analysis very well-thought and accurate. Specially, when you mentioned how Piccolo was an stoic antihero while Vegeta, as a brash one, was much more charismatic. That made me think that during the Tenkaichi tournament, Piccolo actually WAS like that! He boasted and defied and laughed in his foes' faces. Even during the beginning of the Saiyan saga, specially against Raditz, he was like that. Then Gohan appeared, and he learned to care, but couldn't express such feelings, and became more and more stoic. Also, at that moment he started being more strategical, as you mentioned, which makes sense as he now would have to fight taking Gohan into account. Now I kinda want to write a Piccolo fanfic...
I think they had a conversation about fighting each other before, not sure when, though. Probably when Piccolo fused with Kami and became stronger than Vegeta, would've been nice to see.
It really is a shame. Piccolo was always my favorite character. My very first contact wth Dragon Ball was the tournament when him and Goku fought. I miss those days.
That time when he arrived to fight Frieza, while saying to Vegeta that he will deal with him later, was one of the most badass entrance to a anime fight EVER. Piccolo vs 2nd form Frieza, is one of the most underrated fights in DBZ. I hope he gets a power boost in the future...they must find something
So let me get this straight. Piccolo started off interesting and very strong, but wasted his potential following a Timeskip, which only worsened after he achieved happiness and didn't feel the need to push himself further? ...Oh god in Piccolo, he is Gohan's dad. And Krillin's and Vegeta's role of coming up _short_ seems intentional.
Well, to be fair, when Toriyama said that, he meant he was his favorite as a character to draw him actually, because, you know...drawing characters is what a mangaka does, just like a comic book designer/writter. And when you think about it, very ironically, this also might be enough to explain why Piccolo is the only character in the entire series that almost never get a new outfit...that's right : Toriyama loved so much to draw Piccolo, that he basically never changed his outfit from the beginning, unlike all the other main characters ! And just to push it further beyond, Piccolo is a clothing master. Just look at his clothes beam, he's the big green threads. He's the only character that always keeps the same clothes, but he's the one that gives new clothes for his partners...oh Toriyama, you funny genius sneaky smart guy !
Well for a joke I think this is fine, but in native perspective Piccolo is Gohan's teacher. It's more like how Jiraya took Naruto under him and treated him as his grandkids. Similarly Piccolo took Gohan and treated him as a son. But that doesn't mean Goku hadn't done his job as a parent. A parent's job is to make their offsprings independent. That was clearly shown when Goku wanted Gohan to take his role as Earth's defender. Of course Goku did leave him for many years but most army men do that too. They have to be on duty for 6-8 months usually and during wartimes more than a year. But becoz of the hardships that experience lead their child a more successful life.
What happened to Piccolo? 1 word: Vegeta Even in the movies prior to the Saiyans arrival, Piccolo was the one collecting the most bodies, while Goku handled the main antagonist. And look whose taken his place
It is so unfair. I always thought Piccolo was the coolest edgy dude. It is such a shame he got replaced by Vegeta. And worst part is Vegeta fans want Vegeta to outshine Goku
@@subwaysurfer5378 ngl, even I want Vegeta to outshine Goku, especially now with the UI nonsense they're throwing at us and after he got robbed of his vengeance in ResF/ResFSaga.
But the funny thing was that piccolo surpassed Vegeta like twice in Dragonball Z. In the Frieza Saga and the Android/Cell saga. Remember at one point before he fused with kami, he was as strong as super saiyan and then after he fused with kami, he was stronger than the rest of the saiyans minus Gohan. Vegeta’s development in character is still questionable even though yes he did sacrifice himself just so he can save the others but like there wasn’t a specific moment where all the events lead up to him changing and become a good guy as compared to piccolo. Piccolo’ character development and arc was fulfilled with him not following the path of his father King Piccolo and fighting for what’s right. At the end of the day, piccolo deserves way better and has done more in the Dragonball series than Vegeta has
What makes Vegeta so special is that he helps Goku connect more closer to his race with a sense of curiosity and pride. Vegeta is also kinda like a family member to Goku in that they are the last genetic reminders of their kind.
Don't quote me, but I heard after the moro arc, they're going to focus on piccolo, gohan, goten and kid trunks. Not sure if this is true but apparently there's an interview with Akira mentioning this. Again could've been a lie so who knows
@Frizzurd yeah I rather they focus on piccolo and gohan only for now at least. Idky they're so focused on goku and vegeta only? I understand they're at a higher power level but dam let the others catch up so they're not so far behind.
@@whitefox6277 there is certainly the potential considering they are on namek right now and they once again established that namekians can fuse for an incredible power boost

I think they should have kept Piccolo as a teacher. I liked the mentorship he gave to Gohan, Goten and Trunks. I wished in Super he was still teaching Goten and Trunks. I will always enjoy Piccolo.
I agree. I personally think he should have moment with master roshi in being a teacher/mentor. Also should be personally training gohan goten and trunks. This would in some case make him more relevant and stronger to boot.
Also they did introduce the whole concept of fusing with his entire race(not 100% accurate) during the tournament of power. He could be stronger. They just don't want him to be.
@@dragonofthewhiteflame4987 The Namkeians of universe 6 did that because they thought they were going to end, which ended up happening, so be it. Also Piccolo wants to train and use his own strength instead of just absorbing his people, who he appears to care about.
Piccolo will always be a fan favorite. We'll always want more of him. Toriyama doesn't necessarily have to give him a B.S. power boost. He just needs more for the side cast to do that holds weight or shows development.
I just love when the show gives everyone shine. More often in DBZ than super the top z fighter was cycled between goku, vegeta, piccolo and gohan. I feel like the battles are becoming to linear. I love goku but it gets very predictable when he’s the hero over and over and over again. It would be more interesting in my opinion if they made scenarios in the story that were designed for specific characters. This doesn’t mean krillin has to be the hope of the universe but literally standing there for most of the cell and buu saga simply is not fair to characters like him. The Dragon Ball world is bigger than just goku and vegeta.
YES this!! Like some of the best parts of Naruto was when the side characters took center stage and got to tackle problems built for them to solve. Like mentioned in the video, it would have been great to see more dangers that required Piccolo’s specific skillset and Namekian abilities, or one where Krillin was allowed to think his way out of the problem. Having fights tailored to the same Sayain mains every time makes them painfully predictable after so many times.

heh yea if you think about it, he had an epic birth. His dad/mom exploded after tossing him half way around the world. And birth him after getting a little boy missle through his stomache
Yamcha is easily the most underrated. He didn't even go to the TOP. Master Roshi went to the TOP! The 300+ Year old man that had a power level lower than Gohan when he was 6. Yamcha wasn't even that low at the end of Saiyan saga. Z straight up murdered him as a character. Super didn't even bury his grave, they took apart his limbs and fed him to a bunch of rats before gathering them up, burning them, and tossing them into the ocean.

I like Piccolo being the educator. The main Namekians in DB seem to work as guides or teachers, but i do wish he had more moments demonstrating his fighting intellect in a serious battle after 19. I think he fares much better than other characters tho.
Torch Fire i’m glad Krillin got his moment in Super where he defeated 3 opponents by just outsmarting them. Piccolo barely got to flex his ability as a tactician.
Goku is quite intelligent when it comes to combat. Especially after training with Kami. It's just a shame that Z's moving away from tactical combat, to just pure power has dulled the tactical aspect of Goku.
@@philipomoregbe7075 Wrong. He was the only one to understand Super Saiyan and bring it out to its fullest as well as apply it to Gohan while training him. Its instances like that show hes a great and disciplined martial artist.

Hyperrunner Supreme Kai as a character was a waste, North Kai should have had had his place. All he did was talk about how strong the opponent was. Pui Pui, Yakon went down like they were nothing. And I’m sure if Dabura didn’t quit Gohan would have won that fight. My point is Supreme Kai screwed them over at every given opportunity. Gohan could have defended himself against Yamu and Spopovich. If not Krillin would have been able to aide Gohan. If not Vegeta would have blown them all away in one blast. Supreme Kai is trash
@@DGDNtertainment Would that really make sense though? The better approach would be to just make him a more stronger written character, each time in dragonball Goku is introduced to a master higher than his previous master, a kai above king kai was definitely consistent and rightful to this succession, it would only make sense that way since North kai was only the overseer of one quadrant of the galaxy or universe which ever, so its only natural that once the plot expands to even bigger things there would be a higher ranking being than North Kai who Goku already surpassed back in the saiyan saga, so definitely add supreme kai in just don't nerf him like they did, if they had kept him the way he was when he was introduced things would have been way more interesting. And about the other things, actually it was heavily implied that Dabura may have had the slight advantage during that fight and wasn't giving it his 100%, both Vegeta and Dabura said it, yes Gohan may of had the strength to potentially beat Dabura but his fighting was too sloppy, Dabura could have found a way to deceive him since he's really tricky. And I think you're forgetting what actually happened during the ordeal with Spopovich and Yamu, Supreme Kai didn't help Gohan to fight them he froze Gohan so that they could steal his energy, the whole reason behind this is simple, so that Supreme Kai could follow them back to Babadi's secret hideout since that location was unknown before.
+nemesis3587 I don't think it was out of character, it was more than likely the Kami part of him being too terrified of meeting his superior to do anything. Pre-fusion Piccolo would probably rush at Kaioshin without a second thought. Also that was at least a somewhat respectful way of hyping a stronger character A up, without downright needing a weaker character B to lose a fight in a humiliating way. But yeah, that definitely marked the beginning of Piccolo truly being shafted.
Everything you said about Piccolo I feel is even more true for Tien Shinhan. The dialog between him and Roshi during their fight made it seem like he was supposed to become Goku's rival to help him always have something to strive toward, someone to push him to be better. But almost immediately he becomes too weak to help at all and eventually ends up being placed in the same category as Yamcha despite being so much stronger. He doesn't even get a power up boost like Piccolo does when fusing with Nail or Kami. He is forever forced into the sidelines. At least Piccolo gets to pretend to help. At least he has a meaningful connection to the main cast and can contribute that way. Tien gets nothing.

Exactly. It gets me so angry how any character who isn't a saiyan is just a side character and can't keep up with Goku and Vegeta. Like Piccolo trained for three years to be as strong as Goku who trained for his whole life, and then later on he became useless because he can't keep up just because he's not a saiyan? Vegeta even said that Namekians were very strong during the saiyan saga, and even nail was stronger than vegeta during the Namek arc. Yet, Piccolo just ends up falling far behind Goku and Vegeta just like Yamcha and other humans. How does that even make any sense? Saiyan biology is such a stupid and broken thing in Dragon Ball.
Piccolo Jr. in the 23rd Budokai is my favorite character PERIOD. It’s honestly stunning how menacing and cool this character was in his introduction arc. His fights were not only stellar but his dialogue wasn’t yet flanderized to “good guy with wisdom.” He was smart for the most part in this arc (swallowing Kami, and thus giving Goku an ultimatum), and also used his abilities very well (stretchy arms were fun, and growing big hasn’t happened SINCE). Also his teeth teeth and ears were exaggerated, which I loved. Best appearance for sure.
It's incredible. And brutal. I love the moment the first time he rips of his arm the amount of blood that spews from him. And yeah I watch the English dub and Chris Sabat delivers a great voice performance. Piccolo truly sounds like a demon
See if he got a form I’d want it to be like dragon oc namekian bring back those epic designs from dragon ball that piccolos other kids had with the wings and the tails they looked like badass dragon men
I love piccolo and all but it really is sad to see his character go from so interesting and fun to watch to "intelligent"- but not strong enough to do anything substantial in the plot
The problem with a lot of the side characters is they got power crept to the point of being redundant to the plot. Krillin and Piccolo lasted the longest of the Dragonball characters
id even say the power creep got Gohan as well. i know he's not officially a Z fighter but between the Tornament of Power and Broly movie id say Frieza has almost kinda taken the Gohan role as the third most powerful character and someone who's actually useful in fighting the main villains
Piccolo's underwhelming fusion with Kami is probably the moment it became clear that he'd never close the gap, at least in Z. They basically just used him as a way to stall the Androids for a bit and then show how much more powerful Cell had gotten. As for the wasted potential for Kami's character and the great moments we could have had reflecting how huge them (re!)fusing is, it goes without saying that it's disappointing. If Piccolo not transforming often enough to sell new toys was a problem, why did Toriyama not have Piccolo change physically when he fused with Nail and Kami? He could've easily gotten a new outfit at least, if not changed colour or something. Perhaps Piccolo's fatal flaw is that he's bald and thus can't update his appearance by getting a new do?
Yamcha* Lost his girlfriend to one of the mans that Were responsible for his death,And even didnt entered the Tournament of Power while Roshi,That cant even fly due to spite did it
@@chriswentz5197 Even sadder, by the end of Z when Chi-Chi and Bulma joked about switching Goku and Vegeta as their husbands, Yamcha was still unmarried I’m pretty sure, and he (jokingly, I don’t know if he was serious) said that he was an option for the 2 women as well, which both Bulma and Chi-Chi rejected Dude was in his mid to late 40s and was still hanging around a bunch of married couples with kids when he himself was still single after 20 years! That’s the saddest shit ever Remained a weak, dumb, idiotic humiliated character by the end of Z and couldn’t even pull some bitches to compensate at the very least, still unmarried in his 40s!
This just screams "Let these other characters have their own adventures, earn their own stripes, and develop meaningfully away from the main two characters."
0:40-1:10 That's the same argument and the feeling i have when i hear from people who says Gohan doesn't want to fight. Quite frankly i too hate that argument.
