One of the key features of Magic the Gathering is the Color Pie. It's what makes this game so special and yet it can be daunting for new players looking to start playing. What color do I pick and how will I know I'll enjoy playing it. Well that is what this beginners guide to MTG was made for. There are so many aspects as to why you will pick a color but I believe that after watching this color pie guide you will be off on the right foot. As I Dicetry have been making videos on the color pie for a while now and I am in a unique position to help you.

So I got to know what kind of Planeswalker are you?
@jacopoarmini7889

the multiverse is a dark and dangerous place, the spark and the abilities that come with it are a source of great power, but also greater responsibility. As a white-red planeswalker, that responsibility is to preserve both order and freedom in times when both are threatened.

I'm a blue-black Planeswalker through and through. Conniving, tricky, and often indirect. I'm most satisfied when I can win by leaving my opponents with an utterly broken and empty mind, or utilizing their own creatures and spells against them. Failing that, I still have a retinue of small and evasive creatures at my disposal; thieves, assassins, spectres, and wraiths that sneak past enemy defenses to deal direct damage, slowly chipping away at them and often gaining me additional knowledge, or depriving them of theirs, as a result. Mind domination, manipulation, and fear are the name of the game for me.

I am a blue kind of plainswalker. More specifically, I am one mixed with red, which is Izzit. I an so nerdy and so creative. Let's think outside the box and play the game in new ways. I did play Izzet decks in the past. They are so much fun.

It's also worth noting that you don't need to only pick one color - tons of players like to go with whatever colors vibe with them that day! Playing many different decks is one of the best ways to find out what style of play works best for you.

@@DiceTry Same can be said about every MTG character (Jace, Nissa, Sorin, Lazav, Jodah, Bolas etc). If every human was clasificated as WGURB, MTG color philosophy would be useless. That's why we need to look for the most "relevant" and "omnipresent" characteristics: repetitive patterns, repetitive principles, repetitive actions, repetitive omission etc.

The answer is black, black is honestly the best place for newbies to start, it teachs you alot of important lessons about the game notably life is just a resource and the only one that matters is the last one, and that if you can sac a creature to gain real advantage you should
@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle
@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle 11 месяцев назад
Black is a great way to get into playing control or midrange, but is lacking in getting players into aggro or combo decks. I would say the best color (or rather color pair) for newbies to start with is Izzet. Being two color means you learn how to carefully tap lands, between red and blue you hit all of the major deck types (control, midrange, combo, aggro, tempo etc...), It teaches you the importance of card advantage, and (to a lesser extent than black) it teaches you that life is a resource that should be spent.
@Forsparda
@Forsparda 11 месяцев назад
@@ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle The number one hurdle i have found most players struggle with starting out is "everything is a resource dont be afraid to sac it for advantage" and black excels at making people learn that lesson, everything else just depends on the person trying to learn magic their way

For me, I'm probably primary white with green and black as secondary colors. I'm concerned with making a world where everyone can be safe and thrive, and i believe that part of that includes taking care of nature and fulfilling our part in this world. But i also recognize that to accomplish that, you need to gain power and influence, and you can't be afraid to use the resources at your disposal.

I think U/G fits me, but I am uncertain. They are opposing forces or a duality in many ways. I often relate myself to a pendulum, going from one side to the next, but at the same time, seeking balance between the 2. My truth-seeking nature causes me to question everything, all the way down to the core of who I am, which is a problem sometimes, cause while I know who I am, I question if I know who I am...then I realize I probably don't know who I am. There are times when I rely on other's experience of me to get a better understanding of who I am outside of my own ridiculous brain.

I absolutely love Black, it has my favorite flavor and art. However I do also like Blue, Green, and White in that order. I very much like the idea of being an unrestricted and ambitious Planeswalker, and with my favorite color combination as Sultai. I love utilizing the power of Green and Blue, and accept that with life comes death, with death comes life again. An unexpected color combination I've come to start liking a lot is Mardu. I don't particularly vibe with Red but when mixed with White and especially Black, it becomes a great color combination with an order of aggression and ruthlessness

I have been getting into magic recently and have found myself vibing with Red and Green. While these may seem to run counter to each other I disagree, nature can be calm and peaceful at times beasts care not and live on their instincts. I'm particularly drawn to the werewolves of Innistrad, in touch with nature but animalistic fury bubbles just beneath the skin. The Green guides while the Red brings strength.
@Tennethums1
@Tennethums1 10 месяцев назад
9th edition was the one that got me hooked. If you can get your hands on the 9th edition Core Set decks, then you’ll have a great understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each color. That particular core set also introduces players to some of the basic mechanics of the game without being overly complicated like some of the newer stuff does (Planeswalkers and downright dumb cards like double sided, alternate design and split cards 🙄). It’s just the basics, nothing more. Those decks also were only 40 cards so they had room for you to add 20 more to tailor your deck. If those 20 weren’t enough, you could start omitting some from the original deck. They evolved easily enough with new players as they came to understand the game more and more. And to this day cards like Master Decoy will annoy the hell out of anyone…😇

@Tennethums1 4 месяца назад
@@alessiodaniotti264 Aye, those are great as well. I guess I’m referring to the advent of Planeswalkers and Commander decks which for me, didn’t do much. I also feel the game is getting a little heavy and a bit gimmicky with double faced cards, side printed cards, etc. To me, 9th edition (and those you mention) were the glory days. 😇
@alessiodaniotti264
@alessiodaniotti264 4 месяца назад
@@Tennethums1 yes i agree, the later editions and expansions made the game more heavy to understand. I never played a Commander game, but I think the new official format itself is not a problem, the main issues is when there are cards printed in later years that are made in particular for that format, while being a waste in classic matches. Plus the planeswalker were hard to balance with the rest of the game. Another thing i don't like in recent years is that some new features are made with Magic Arena in mind, but are awful in a paper card match (like some abilities like "exploring the dungeon" or the "night/day" cycles... what a pain in the axx taking record of the cycle). Is like Wizard had forgot that the game is also and mainly a trade card game, and not a console or PC RPG

i never find Black a difficult color to start, it's quite self explanatory: powerfull creatures (maybe not always in strength, but with abilities) with not high cost in mana, but drawback that are quite straightfoward to understand and handle, toons of creature removal.... maybe a total newbie should be carefull in using a lot of cards that requires life cost, but all the others are ok. I agree that blue is the harder color to handle to a total new player, since it requires good knowledge of the pile, of the possible opponent's strategy (and maybe specific cards) and a good timing.

Good explanation but I'd just like to point out that what colour a player's values most closely align with often isn't actually the colour they'd most enjoy. The one that jumps out at me most is blue, because, to be able to play a blue deck well, you have to be able to think very quickly about what you want to do (due to the massive amount of cards in your hand and spells you can play at any given moment) which is in direct opposition to the "slowly mulling over your options" approach blue is supposed to represent. And imo this opposition persists in the other colours too - the "slower" a deck is, the faster you have to be able to think to play it. Ideology-wise, I align most closely with blue, so I play black, because I find that best supports my slow strategic planning approach, much better than blue does.

I'm 7 months late and only just started playing Marvel Snap but I think your best bet may actually be black-red. Marvel Snap seems to have a lot of combos and synergy and I haven't quite got far enough to know exactly how a "destroy" deck works, but if you're wanting a deck where you kill a lot of stuff and have abilities triggering whenever things die, I'd go with black-red. You could do the same with mono-black but it's a little different, more focused on filling up your own graveyard and returning creatures from the dead and paying life to get other abilities and stuff. Adding red gives you some extra damage on your opponent instead of yourself.

I'm gonna take a hard left here- if you're new to the game, don't pick a color over the others. Play as many different kinds of decks as you possibly can. Figure out what you like to do in the game and select the colors you need to make that happen, no matter how many or how few colors that takes.

The easiest way as an absolute begginner is by going with which color you have the most land cards for

I have watched probably 3-4 hours worth of content on picking the best color. What I've gotten from that fact alone is I am NOT red lol. Impulse? What is that?

I'd say red tends to be my least favorite overall, I don't really enjoy the style of creatures, same with white, to an extent I don't enjoy playing small creatures, I want big creatures and control spells, and buffs to make the creatures even bigger 😁

When I started I though blue is my colour because I just like blue as a colour itself. Then I realized blue inhabits the most toxic and detrimental playstyle of all the colours and hate it ever since. What point is there playing a game with somebody if the whole point of your plays is that the other player can't play (counterspells, milling crazy fast, skiping the opponents turn, bouncing) I am a mostly green player now as I feel that is how the game should be played, paired with some red, some black and rarly white but avoid blue like the pague and concede when the first counterspell is cast. As I have no buisness in just watching someone else play.

One thing I would say is that there's always exceptions to every rule almost in the game of magic.

Nice explanation. However it's would be nice to show, for the "lore" point of view, that while it's true that most of the white creatures are good ones and black are bad ones, this is not the full explanation. White being the color of the order and balance means also that some white creatures acts to bring that order no matter what, banishing from a city, land or even a plane any creature that, even if not a real threat, would not 100% obey to that order, acting as a fanatic and radical (a good comparison would be the crusades or the inquisition during the end of Middle age/first part of Reinassance). The fact that the second best colour for a control deck (after the obvious blue) is white is a game reflection of this In the opposite, black being the colour of "selfishness", "amorality" and "the end justifies the means" lead to many evil creatures and spells being black. However black creatures can be good as the others, with the only difference of being more pragmatic. I am the first person to give a lot of value to feelings and a moral code, but a certain degree of pragmatism is needed, since some times the white way could lead to some sort of oligarchy, or is some unreal utopy. Also i would say that in some limited measure, selfishness sometimes could lead to a self-growth. The main difference between the properties of the 2 colours (or even all the colours) is how far can you push some quality before crossing the line, making that a "flaw" or "fault"
