There are quite a few mic choices for CB radio. Power mics, Noise canceling mics, Stock mics, mics with "bells and whistles", and all of the same in base mic styles too.
This video will demystify the many types of mics, and help you choose whats right for your setup.

I have always loved the RK56 noise canceling mic. Press the lip guard to your upper lip and talk normally. Online you will find knockoffs however at a truckstop or CB shop you will get the real deal. I've had the same 3 mics for over 20 years and still use them today. Changed one to a 15ft cord but the others are all original and still sound great. The boxes you plug between the radio and mic or sometimes install within the radio itself are commonly referred to as "NoiseToys". I have an 8 button box that is more or less a retro sound cloud that plays the sound that you record or is already recorded within the board. Some can key the radio others require you to key the mic then press the button for it to broadcast the sound it depends on where it is intended to be installed. Some are small enough to even install within a stock mic with a 3mm momentary button or such to make it sound off as it were.

I bought a K40 speech processor mic back in the eighties and it was one of my favorites. I still have it but it no longer works. When you key it, it just squeals. I did find a schematic online years ago and printed it off but haven't tried to repair the unit. I don't think the eight pin processor IC is even available any more. One feature of the mic I really liked was a strong magnet on the back of it, you could stick it to a metal area of the dash(this was the 80s) and not worry about the mic ever falling off. K40 even made a CB with the speech processor circuit built into the radio. I think they sold for about $150.

I live in a very rural area about 30 min drive away from town and although I can recieve well, transmitting has been a bit more challenging. I just installed a new antenna and was able to get my first contact on my mobile/base. It's a Galaxy DX959 SSB with the stock mic and flat SWR on 1 and 40. The radio has mic gain and it was on full when I made the contact earlier. Would a power mic help at all since the radio has mic gain built in? I'd like to get out a little farther. Great videos by the way. Has really helped me out a lot.

I like Echo, but I hate roger beep. If you use a slight amount of echo I think it improves the sound of ones voice. It sounds full instead of mono tone like some do, but the trick is to run a small amount of echo not blast it so that your voice keeps going over and over after you say something.

You have your radio station set up in a garage or workshop? Do you stand up to use your radio? I have a combination base station with HF/VHF/UHF ham, including a straight code key and a code reader, AM/SSB CB, and several scanners, a high amp power supply to run my newer ham HF/VHF/UHF radios, an autotuner for the HF ham radio, and a number of meters, watt meters, SWR meters, and an amplified speaker. I also have a vintage D104 desk mike, but I found it awkward to use, so I use handheld mics for all my radios. I have all this set up on a desk in my bedroom I got specifically for the purpose, with some shelves mounted on the wall for stuff I don't use very often. Yes I have some money into this setup, but I built it over 3 decades, I didn't just run out and spend $3000-$4000 all at once. Along with what's inside, I also have a bunch of antennas. One for HF, which covers the entire HF band when used with an auto tuner, one for CB, one for VHF/UHF ham, and one for scanners. And yes, that means a lot of cables. All these cables, combined with all the cords for all my equipment makes quite a bowl of spaghetti. As for microphones, my favorite handheld mic for both base station and mobile use is the Astatic RD104-E amplified microphone. Yes, its expensive at around $40 new, and you can rarely find used ones, because they work so well people never give them up. They will last for decades.

Stock mics are OK, but my go to for the 20 years of my trucking career was hands down was the Turner Road King RK-56. While Astatic is good as well, Turner just had it, hands down. Now this is me, a trucker that retired in 2006, so *ALLOT* has happened since then, LOL! I don't even know if Turner is in business anymore... But hands down, it was the best tool for trucking, because of the noise levels. I'd say trucks nowadays are so quiet, you could get away with using the stock mic. I did get a toy-box mic, and while it was fun for an evening, I went back to my Turner, because at the end of the day, it was the clearest and most dependable mic. While toy-box mics are fun, when you need to be serious, and are in the middle of a critical situation, you don't want the battery pooping out, or the complex circuitry breaking down on you, when the fertilizer is hitting the fan-blade...

Nice video. I use a 1976 Chrome Eagle same as the Silver Eagle the microphone element sounded tinty so i changed the element out with a SHURE 522 microphone element. Works flawlessly and audio is impeccable sounding. I use it on my Galaxy Saturn Turbo and my President Lincoln 2+ with a mic pin adapter I made. Awesome reports. I bought a Galaxy 959 a few weeks ago and expected to trash the stock mic. But I get such good audio reports from all my base station freinds that I'm hesitant to throw it out now. Apparently it sounds really loud while also being crystal clean clear audio. I was not expecting that from a stock galaxy mic. I'm stuck between wanting a nicer mic and the " if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. My preference is to be loud and crystal clear, but apparently the stock mic is delivering it. Tough decision lol

This is just a guess, and maybe our man can tell me whether I am right or not. But I would assume that you don't want a power mic, or a noise cancelling mic if your radio has those features built in, such as "dynamike" and "ANL-NB" on some Cobras. It would seem that adding a redundant system might cause problems. Then again, I really don't know. I might be all wet with that. Just throwing it out there for consideration.

Neither on is worth a crap . Poorly made and have issues, get yourself a Sirio tornado they are 89 bucks on e bay. It`s a great 5/8`s wave antenna with some actual gain figures. And make sure you get real coax as well like lmr 240 ultraflex. www.cableandwireshop.com/lmr-240-ultraflex-cable.html And if your not in a noisy environment get a good dynamic non noise canceling mic like the superstar coffin style mike on e bay or the road devil power mic . Dont buy a new d 104 mobile handheld mic they are crap so are the new rk 56 . Stay away from both. And allways open your mic`s and lube the switch right of the bat for longevity and add a bit or acoustic fom in front of the element for a smoother more pleaseant sound

In Europe, microphones are much more expensive and salaries are lower, CB is enjoyed by relatively wealthy people, drivers. Manual workers in Poland only have smartphones. There were good radio stations in the USA, good old potentiometers, good durability, good speakers. Now mic cables are of poor quality, often without shielding, the speakers are quieter and less dynamic. The USA had great base microphones Turner, Astatic etc. In Europe for many years there were very stringent emission standards, modulation was very poor often 30%, everything was done to ensure that CB equipment had the lowest possible range in relation to the professional bands. Initially, in Europe there was a limit of 0.5W of output power, so in practice it was even a little less not to be exceeded by accident.
