Every rally in a pickleball game starts with a serve. Although the serve in pickleball can be a very basic shot, it is a very important shot and can give you an edge to start a point. Not many points are won in a pickleball game off of an ace serve; however, many opportunities are lost by serves that are hit out of bounds. Learn the key pickleball serve techniques and strategies to know before you hit the courts.

The Pickleball rules state that the ball shall be dropped on the serve. How is it that you’re advocating for it to be tossed up in the air?

Rule 4.A.5 applies to all serves. "The serve shall be made with only one hand releasing the ball. While some natural rotation of the ball is expected during any release of the ball from the hand, the server shall not impart manipulation or spin on the ball with any part of the body immediately prior to the serve." (see exceptions) Rule 4.A.8b states "When releasing the ball, the ball shall not be propelled in any direction or in any manner prior to striking the ball to make the serve." Rule 4.A.8b only applies to the Drop serve not the Volley serve. For a Volley serve, there are 3 rules that apply at the point the paddle contacts the ball. 1) Entire paddle face is below your wrist 2) Paddle has upward motion 3) Contact with ball must be below your waist For the Volley serve, as long as you comply with those 3 requirements and you don't spin the ball, you can toss it up if you want to.

Is one allowed to toss the ball upwards for a volley serve?

I thought this also, and immediately looked to see if anyone commented. So, I looked at the usapickleball official rules, and for Volley Serve (no bounce off ground) it does not specify, so I think it's allowed. However for Drop Serve (bounce off the ground) you are not allowed to toss up or throw down.

Yes, but you must still comply with those 3 Volley serve rules plus no spinning the ball. It makes sense if you think about it. The 3 rules for a Volley serve do not apply to a Drop serve. For a Drop serve, you open your hand and drop the ball. There is no way it will bounce above your waist. If you were allowed to throw it down or throw it up really high, you could get it to bounce above your waist. With those 3 rules not applying to a Drop serve, getting the ball to bounce that high would give you an unfair advantage.
