Pickleball Skills | Understand and Respect the "X" - Pickleball Point Breakdown
Understanding and respecting the "X" is a critical skill to learn if you want to improve your pickleball doubles play. We also look at keeping the ball away from your body as you hit your third shot. These are critical pickleball skills to improve your game.
This is part of our Project 4.0 point breakdown video series where we break down a pickleball point to look at optimal and not as optimal play so that we can improve our games.

Great video and a light just went off. I heard this at a Helle Spare clinic a few years ago but most rec players want forehand to take the middle. However, this explains why I play so much better with some partners - especially one who is a lefty - we maintain the X. It the ball is coming cross court to you, you take it.

great body position analysis of shot choices.

I’ve tried to play this way but in rec play teammates insist on forehand takes the middle. Great video to refer them to.

In2Pickle Maybe it’s because most of the beginners and often the intermediate players have some issue with their backhand.

Argh! I know. Coming from tennis and volleyball, this Forehand Must take shot crap really gets to me.

First of all if only the player with the forehand covers the center hit it becomes predictable to the opponents. Secondly it could result in leaving that spot/area of the left side of the court open. The backhand stroke must not be assumed weak. Since this is rec play especially it would be an opportunity to develop and maintain a sound backhand. Otherwise it’ll remain weak. Darwin’s theory of ‘use and disuse’. Using it strengthens it, not using it lets it atrophy. Nice example using the X here to illustrate the need to work together as a team and not leave too many open spots for them to exploit. By all means focus on covering that vulnerable middle shot but make sure to cover the sidelines as well. Footwork drills come in handy, as in approach shots, split step and lateral movement and reaching with an otherwise looser/comfy grip, now firming up momentarily. Thanks!

If one always respected the X, that also would become a predictable hit.

In2Pickle I play at the Clearwater Community Center. Occasionally on rain days at Greenwood. Practice at Bardmoor. I also started Pickleball at our condominium Lighthouse Towers where we play each Tuesday and Thursday. If I see you around, I’ll definitely say hi. I live in MI during the summer and will migrate South after October. Pickle On!

What am I missing here. I would never take a ball like that and try to drop it straight ahead of me. I would drop it to the persons back hand that’s basically my X in that situation. If you do a good drop shot that person usually then dinks it cross court back to you just as your arriving to the net in time to get it. I get the X concept but I think it’s a bad idea to think in rec play that this random person your paired up with will understand the X, they will do a bad backhand then wonder why you didn’t take it having the forehand

As used, the X is a concept about who covers a ball on your side more than a concept about where to hit the ball. It is a way of thinking who has a better shot at the ball.

None of that matters when the player hitting the 3rd shot leaves it up. The 4th shot could have got the feet of either of the opposing players. There are other important points to be made here.

@@BestPickleballCoach understandable. But what I think matters more in this point is the poor shot choice on the 3rd shot. In my mind she had 2 options here. 1st the drop should have gone to the backhand side of the player to her right to put her in the right position for the next shot (my choice usually). Or she could have drove it at the player in front of her because her return didnt give her time to make it to the kitchen line and she was still moving her feet. The fact that she broke the "x" means nothing as long as she does one of those 2, preferably the 1st.

@@BestPickleballCoach isn't the whole point to get your opponent out if position? Haven't played a game where they hit it right where I want them to. I get what you're trying to say somewhat. But the way you're suggesting would have made that a backhand dink for the other person at at their level that would be a much less percentage shot. Let the forehand take the middle and move your feet just like you did to get to that position. Hit it to one of the 2 spots I said and now your position is perfect. Her position is only bad because of her next shot choice

Maybe a confusing explanation for breaking the X. Does explain the concept but to comply, requires a backhand 3rd vs the forehand in the clip. Skill levels not taken into consideration.

Hello Jerry. Rather than backhand forehand or skill level, I like to think in terms of best shot overall for my team. X is a great overriding principle to apply.

The woman came up to hit the ball, should she have waited to hit the ball first?
@BestPickleballCoach

Hi Keegan. It is generally best to move once you have a sense of the ball you or your partner are hitting. Hope this helps

Sorry to add to the "forehand takes the middle " comments. At the 4.5, 5.0 and pro level I not only see the return covered by the forehand when it's down the middle, but even when the ball is a third or half into there partners side. (?)
