Welcome to the Pier City Cycles Tutorial Series. In these videos, we hope to show you a range of jobs or mods that you can carry out on your BMW R9T or R18. We hope to cover those simple jobs which new owners might not feel confident in asking, all the way through to the signature mods we use to transform our builds.
In this tutorial, we'll show you how to remove and then reinstall the rear suspension shock absorber on the BMW R9T. This is a task that only requires a small amount of tools and only around 30-40 minutes of your time in the garage to carry out. We always recommend going for a Wilbers rear shock, but this process works for all makes.

Tools Required;
A Ratchet
A T50 Torx Bit (2014-20 Models) or a T55 Torx Bit (2021+ Models)
Torque Wrench (up to 60Nm)
A Scissor/Trolley Jack
A Rear Workshop/Paddock Stand

I have discovered on my bike - a 2022 scrambler, that the shock bolts are T55 not T50. They are both the same so check the bottom bolt (which you can see) before attempting the top one which you can’t see. Love the channel.

I did a shock change on a R nine T today, without removing the wheel. using a hydraulic trolley jack to jack up the middle of the bike so that the top of the shock clears the top of the sub frame(and the plastic tray). I used a trolley jack to slowly raise the middle of the bike just enough. Then i used scissor jack( to gently lower bike down to align the lower shock bolt holes.).. If i had a block to sit the scissor jack on , i could have done the whole task with that only.

Great video, two questions, how long is the Torx head driver and do you really need to remove the whole seat and seat support?

We would recommend doing the rear shock for most models. Once you have judged the improvement the rear shock gives you then maybe consider the front end, we don't think it's as much of a requirement.

The shocks are model specific. Simply choose the Pure 2017-20 and select the -25mm option.

When you say the stock shocks are bad are you referring to only the base model or also the upgraded adjustable shock on the R NineT?

The shocks are model specific, so choose Pure 2017-20 model. We always recommend using as much height as you're comfortable with.

Hi. Great video. Does a higher rear shock do not chance the geometry of the bike? And would you have to re-set cardan shaft anyhow? Cheers, Rolf

@Pier City Cycles when you stating the exhaust needs to be removed, does the entire exhaust and headers need to come off, or just the muffler in order to get the rear wheel off? Thanks.
