Aside from the mafia side of this interview, this is one of the best police interviews I have ever watched. Mr. Poletti is a very wise, astute and noble police officer. He is so right how things have changed. What is very important to take away from this interview in my humble opinion, is that policing has become bureaucratic and is no longer a vocation. In my corner of the world we have police officers giving speeding tickets prolifically on rural roads just outside urban areas where no danger is eminent. Yet for years now, my neighbours and I have asked our police department and local politicians to make a police presence in our neighborhood because irresponsible drivers are speeding at 80kmh in front of our parkette where children play. Never have they ever patrolled the area. This is very offensive to say the least. Yes, Mr Poletti is 100% correct about politics running policing. Policing is no longer a VOCATION. It is simply a bureaucratic nightmare out of control because of municipal politics and a top heavy environment that no longer mentors to this long forgotten vocation. Let us pray and hope this will change. Beautiful work and kudos Montreal Gazette for bringing this together. Cheers from Ontario
The other really important takeaway is that there is too much drugs on the street and police are not doing their jobs. There hasn't been a big drug bust in montreal in over 20 years? APPALLING!
This man is not only a fountain of info on the montreal mafia and organized crime, he also has the experience first hand and speaks his mind and isn't afraid to critique law enforcement when it's needed. Also his presence, voice and just overall tone, makes the viewer totally engaged in what he has to say. I could of watched easily another hour to hear him, and only him speak. I find his experience priceless, his knowledge and understanding of the mtl mob second to none, and his way of improving the police dpt etc shows he will say it straight up how things are and won't sugar coat anything. Aside from needing to have his own podcast n telling stories of his time as a cop, the mtl police dept or even rcmp should give this man a senior level position as an expert when it comes the the mtl mob and how to slow it dwn
not in hour segments they need to be shorter 10 minute segments on a topic and fully answer a question and then upload it into different segments in 10 minute increments and then have one long playlist that you can keep updating do a weekly report !Keep us updated on the latest , on the trials have they made arrests ?
This woman is incredibly disconnected from this whole set of issues and is a needless distraction, very much adversely affecting my resolve to continue listening to this police guy. And I'm at 9 minutes mark... I'll do my best.
@@RR-WhoYouHate was just in mtl when from bus station to via rail station saw liek 15 cops on my way. and they had like 9 inside it. your not looking hard enough. aruond mount royal.they alwasy crusing. they on bikes, they walk, and they have cars. if you don't see them its cuz your blind im sorry. mtl has more cops then almost anyother city in north amarica. exept mabyer sherbooke they have endless amounts here.
So terrific to see this. Visited the deli frequently in the late 70's. The best deli food ever. One of the owners children owns the Centre deli in Toronto.
The presence of the mafia in a neighborhood has absolutely nothing to do with how safe it is. They’re not out killing innocent ppl. They kill each other. Tbh I think neighborhoods are safer with them around. This lady’s worried about them shooting her it seems. Just very random.
I agree. She is genuinely clueless about this topic. I don’t mean that in a rude way. I certainly don’t know everything, but The Italian Mafia is not going around killing innocent people.
Really well spoken and knowledgeable. This was a great listen, very interesting. I feel more Montrealers should know what's been happening in their city on this level. He has a great voice for a podcast too, I would listen every week!
He is right: Mexican cartels has entered into Canada (as the government have taken out visa requirement to Mexicans). And they make Italian mafia, bikers look like child play.....this is our main problem today (not interest rate, Trudeau traveling, Johnston etc). In Canada we have social peace, where other countries do not...and organized crimes is enemy number 1 of our precious life style now.
I remember few years back watching a reporting on gangs activities in Montreal and it was documented that top mexican cartels sicarios were freely wandering in Montreal. That's totally unacceptable. As Mr. Poletti said, our authorities are sleeping.
Got news for you the cartels never needed your Princess Trudy and his Rainbow mafia for permission. Everyone works together except the alphabet mafia demanding pronouns.
I spent some time in a crackhouse this year as an observer. It's a joke, everyone knows where it is, how much crack is sold, how much money is made but we just let it fly! After 5 min, I knew who was doing the dealing, the running, the 20$ hookers, etc. etc. etc.
As someone who grew up in the east end of Montreal, I'm hearing people say they felt safer when the mafia was around. Kids could play outside and not get killed by a bullet in the middle of the day.
He clearly has the education needed to address this. He is 100% correct the police chiefs being appointed means they don't care. Sadly none of them will speak out about how they dont function. But this man did !
There have been plenty of mob murders committed in broad daylight up in Montreal and Hamilton. The only way to reduce the crime is to enforce a law similar to RICO in the states. But quite frankly- I’d rather see the mob still active than the government take over their rackets
Tony soprano was not a "good guy" and those movies only glorify the mafia if you turn them off half way (or are repeating secondhand opinions on movies you havent seen)
There's no surprise.. decades ago (another life ago)...I was in highrise on one side of the highway with a group of people who were in the process of negotiating a deal on several hundred pounds of Hash about 15-20 floors up, saw the police cars coming below and took an elevator down to underground parking lot which ran underneath the highway to a twin highrise in the other side and from another unit in that building watched the raid of the apartment unit we had just left a few minutes previously.. the relatively new people I was with doing business..I was just literally a teenager tagging along with my buddy from Vancouver and his friend made a few phone calls and just a few hours later in the early morning we drove out to a nice house in the suburbs where upon entering the driveway a man came out shaking this guy's hands..opened the garage door and trunk of the vehicle in the garage upon which payment changed hands and a few hundred pounds of hash went from that trunk into the trunk of the vehicle I was a passenger in... and we left..the next day I was at the airport flying back to Vancouver having had enough adventure realizing the person I was with was not what I had expected and as I watched the television news in airport waiting for my flight back a news story was on about the Montreal police and a caption on the screen identified as the Chief of police if Montreal showed a man walking out of building..the exact same man the previous morning who sold back the hash to that was seized back to the guys it was seized from.. that's a long time ago near 4 decades but I've always wondered if anything ever changed.
We tend to forget history. There were killings in daylight. Plus the mob played a huge part in helping create unions. The old guard is retiring and this is the new guard figuring out who's going to be in charge. Problem is it's 2023 and it's not the same landscape especially with smart phones, geolocation and social media. Organized crime will have to change its strategy or governments will turn to totalitarism in order to appease the public. The next 10 to 20 years will be super interesting.
What's crazy is that the mob is having discussions now as to whether or not to kill the children/offspring of this individual. But here's the kicker. We know how that ends. Almost everyone knows about Count of Monte Cristo, Inigo Montoya, the daughter at the end of Kill Bill 2 and the series finale of Boardwalk Empire. Someone will want revenge for having their Mom killed. And someone somewhere is having the dark discussion about the ethics of killing children. Ndebele and Kayan Lahwi tribespeople wear neck rings. Initially these rings were created to prevent the necks from being taken off with a machete from enemy tribes. It's only later they became a symbol of wealth, beauty and luxury. Someone is going to have to sit the mobsters down who fancy themselves kings and really spell it out for them that either they tow the line or welcome a dystopian and draconian new world order. And Lord knows with the United States and its huge military complex: it's literally chomping at the bit for any excuse to release armed sentinels. And since Canada has such a close relationship to the US and to *ahem* New Jersey... they'll be more than happy to help the cousins in Connecticut bring forth an increase in government surveillance and the erosion of our individual freedoms. I guess Orwell's 1984 was prophecy.
Wow!!! Did this ever open my eyes to a whole different world than the one I grew up in. I know it's always been hush hush but that is scary that the pot of soup that is Montreal has so many more elements in it than we are aware of. Fantastic, frank and candid interview with someone who knows his stuff and isn't afraid to speak about it. Thank you! I'd like a list of areas in Montreal that are unsafe to wander into please LOL!
Hm that last part is wishful thinking; knowing that it's extremely easy for street gangs in MTL to get hand guns I'd feel safer having the right to carry, as a law obeding citizen I should be able to defend myself against thugs and home invaders. If the government could assure us there's an infinitesimal quantity of guns that gets into criminal hands I'd feel safe. That's an utopia tho.
You are ridiculous. Why would you feel safer carrying a gun ??? Are you a criminal yourself??? When do « gangster » attack innocent people???? If everyone carries gun it’s going to be like in the usa when people get killed over stupid stuff like road rage.
Cutting the snake head isn't always a silver bullet, sometimes you have to get working on the street gangs because that's a real issue affecting normal people and these fools don't care who they hurt. Far more dangerous than any mafiosi...
I went to Montreal in 2017 after finding pic of Adrianna Cartier she was kidnapped from Montreal in 1975. Police on papineau told me crime never happened and to go home Montreal not safe. Quebec missing children told me that had no such case. I lived in Montreal and in 2018 on chim radio and ctv they announced her anniversary. People in Montreal told me crime happened. Why was I lied to and refused help?
Great interview. VALERIE PLANTE...Listen to this man ...He knows what he is talking about...our police force can not handle what's going on today...we need to go back to grass roots...And have dialogue with Street Gangs , Bikers and organized crime...let them do thier business but discuss the fact no violence....
Could you guys make a video about the chinese triads? I find them interesting because even thought they exist, we never hear them. How strong are they in Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario? I know they are quit strong in BC, but other than that...how about the other provinces?
Mafia and MC Gangs hire young people to do hits? Why? for 5k -10k why go to prison. So thesse new hit-men or teenagers are brazen and fearless. Be careful and don't get involved with drugs and Gangs. Life is shorter than you think 😢
Sadly citizens are devoid of the culture in policing today, the changes that have happened over the last 30 years disheartening. Pleasantly surprised, great guest and an honest dipiction of law enforcement, the challenges and misconceptions in North America. To clarify, in Vancouver you cannot walk into a police station. Members afraid of their own shadows and openly admit they stay clear of organized crime entities. So they engage with the weak in isolation in our communities to fill their days. This lazy, self entitled, policing based on members lack of motivation and conducting themselves based on their feelings has had unintentional consequences with law enforcement agencies. Moral, suicides, members attacked or killed, wake up! To those members that live the oath, stay safe. Clean up your own back yard, remember those before you amd serve and protect those who ask for help. Your guest should be taken seriously and my view needs to be provided a place at the table, to try and alter the course of policing today. Courage is required not more members.❤ ❤❤❤
maybe people should be contacting their local MP's and putting pressure on them why they've removed VISA restrictions to Mexico and have it reversed if all their cartel are coming up here?? They're all here and laying low and it's going to get a lot more violent when they make themselves known. I'd like to know who signed off on this removal of VISA requirements for really dangerous criminals to enter our country?
That female journalist had no business being in that interview, she cut him off when he had something very interesting to talk about to mention a non relevant issue, it seems like she was just there for the clout and kept asking nonsensical things to try and stand out.
Still a very safe city compared many in the USA and even London. The UK outlawed firearms, so now criminals will stab you to death, if you don't hand over your valuables.
I enjoyed this interview. I'm not surprise that it will get worse going forward. I loved the PAST Montreal.... Not too crazy about the PRESENT Montreal.... The FUTURE Montreal as me worried..... Go Habs.....
I think your on another planet buddy your French language will get you no where In life . And remember it’s the English that built this province without us you would be on the streets begging for money
As an Italian middle-aged man, I'm very surprised to discover that the Mafia has grown incessantly in Canada as well as in many parts of this unlucky world. I mean, until the atrocious killing that shook me namely that of the former boss' daughter-in-law (...the one who was running a beauty centre...), I truly thought that Montreal was much better than other places on the planet, and that Canadian and/or Italian murderers and mobs were caged for life or, however, that crime's percentage was extremely low... but now I'm aware that I was deeply wrong.
Canada needs a mussolini.... Canadian corrupt, cowardly complicit ( not all but many ) police, politicians, lawyers & judges ect...... Allow this to happen or turn a blind eye or pretend to clamp down but don't take out the whole system everyone knows are crimminals.
My mother's aunt, and many first cousins emigrated to Montreal from Molise in 1954. The first Italian Church in Montreal LA Madonna Della Difesa has a painting of IL Duce riding a white stallion on it's ceiling Can't tell how many weddings and Funerals I attended there. There have been Mob murders there for decades. Usually Calbrese and Sicilian mobsters vying for control. I have a cousin who emigrated to Toronto in 1959. He built a successful construction business and is a multimillionaire. The Toronto mob tried to shake him down 35 years ago, to the point where he feared for his life. This is nothing new.
Lmao, you were delusional. Montreal is almost entirely run by the Mafia. Why do you think we are CONSTANTLY under construction? They have billiona dollar contracts.
Montreal policed cops get an average of 1200 9/11 calls A DAY ... Im pretty sure someobody sees them.. maybe you should get out more or if you find trouble, Im sure you ll see them.
Montréal is still a relatively safe city compared to most major cities in North America. Québec has one of the lowest crime rate in Canada. Québec City is deemed as one the safest cities in the world. The mayor of a municipality in the south shore of Québec City even said that most of their residents don't even lock their doors. I won't name the town, but a friend of mine lives there, and she never locks her doors.
@Mathew Lee Compared to Chicago, San Francisco, St. Louis, Baltimore very safe. Even London is no longer safe. They just kill with knives instead of guns.
lol Québec has the lowest crime rate in Canada. Montréal is safer than Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary or Winnipeg, etc. And Québec city is the the safest urban area in the country.
(13:55) That's some interesting point of view... Make them believe it's safe (25:29). We will know in 5-7 years, they probably mark your word Mr. Poletti.
