Matt and Andy explore the very building where thousands of BA pilots once learnt how to fly Boeing 747s and the engineers learned to fix them! This HUGE abandoned building was once a hive of activity but now lays silent full of aeronautics history!

Those big round platters in a smoky plastic case, were the original hard disks. You'd put them into a drive unit, and then could read the data off them.

6:35 look like computer data tapes. Often seen in old films from the 60/70s spinning around reel to reel. 12:37 are the the Rudder pedals and steering when taxiing. 27:07 Winchester hard drive platters.

I flew as cabin crew with BMI British Midland for a number of years at Heathrow, at the beginning of this video you were standing next to parts of the mock up for the BMI A330, it was dumped there when BMI merged with BA in 2012, during your initial training when you join the airline, we used the mock ups for fire and evacuation excercises, and service training, and every year you would have a refresher course, which if you didn't pass you didn't fly untill you passed. Except for the simulators all the aircraft you see in the hanger are called mock ups.

Had a lot of fun messing around on the mock ups, especially going down the slides, as a purser we sometimes did what we call loft excercises in the simulator, where you would act out different emergency scenarios with the pilots, you would sit on the jump seat behind the pilots, and then during the flight a guy on a computer would program an emergency situation, and you would relay what's going on in the cabin to the pilots, really great fun, I could go on but I don't want to bore you or sound like an anorak lol

20:40 those coils are for dissipating built up electricity. They use them with wind turbine systems and plains to keep from over charging or lightning strikes.

the tapes you asked about originally on the top shelf in the see through square plastic case with the grey tape cartridges were LTO/Ultrium 1 or 2 digital tape backup tapes. They're used to backup server data. I doubt they'd have been used for in flight / live backups as they were flying it though. It would more than likely be a nightly backup system. What the big round things are, I couldn't say though...probably and older version thereof or what they used to use for large storage HDDs back in the eighties and early 90s

Matt, you're too young to know this...those aren't film reels, they're magnetic data reels. They record software and also data from testing.

It's a Boeing 737 - 400 Series airliner. the pedals are for steering once on the ground. At 16:22 it's says what it is on the can. At 29:21 = hubcaps for the aircraft wheels.

yay loved this my younger brother Darren works as a qualified engineer and makes parts for first class and business class seating only at a huge factory here in south wales not far from Newport and for one seat that makes up in to a bed etc blah blah blah for one single seat that's made where he works nights it costs £64.0000 for just one seat could not believe when he told me so its no wonder the top airlines charge so much brilliant video guys shame you both got caught at end stay safe both xx

The vhs recorder was for recording the student pilots sessions so they could be played back and studied. The reason there is so many different types of data holding devices is probably from the 40 odd yrs worth of pilots having to log so many hours on a simulator before they are allowed in the proper plane. Them days it was all on film or tape as the only proof to go with whatever logs they had to fill to be assessed in. Nowadays it’s all digitally stored so the entire facility is obsolete and has been stripped of all the assets

Old fashioned flight data recorders used tape, just like cassesttes. In the past, accident investigators would have to try and splice the tape of damaged recorders. I think those brown things which looked like dinner plates were spools of tape from old FDRs.

Have to say I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this video (wasn't convinced the location would hold my interest) but thought I'd give it a go anyway, as always you've absolutely smashed it and love how you poke around and look at every last detail. Amazing so much stuff was left behind and some of that old tech looked fascinating. The hairy poo, what was all that about? the big black thin disc that you picked up in the weed smelling room was an old 5¼" floppy disc. they were then replaced by a 3½" floppy discs with a more solid plastic case

all those tapes are probably different flight destinations for the flight sim

in older planes they used to have a pilot, co-pilot, and an in flight Flight Engineer or two who would be in charge of monitoring the planes various systems such as hydraulics and radio systems and radar to check proximity to other planes etc. These are all things that are monitored by computer systems these days though.

Really old Livery on the schedule folders in the racking that design is from the 70's, BMI British Midland International then an off shoot BMI Baby , The box will have probably have had the radar in it which is under the nose cone on aircraft, Brilliant was that lads ,

the hydraulic system may have had a stabilisation system using a gas pressurised valve/tank. The bits you saw on the floor next to the simulator were it's outer casing to make it look like the front of the plane and hide all the electronics/hydraulic valves etc

A380 is a double decker...it's a lot more recent than a 747...I think first class were upstairs on a 747.

Those round cases are not film reals, they are old magnetic tapes for computer data storage. Considering that the place was vacated only around 10 years ago, those tapes may have been for the 'old technology' 737 simulator. Somebody who worked there must know.

My mother and father worked for Boeing Airport in California; I thought it was awesome that the small plates read out the "We the people," Our father made all us kids memorize the whole of it when we were very young, Me being the youngest, I was 4 yrs old when I had to start learning it. I was born in CA. but we moved to upstate NY when I was 6 months old. Thank you for a great clip, guys. ✈🛫🛬

I’m not into planes but found this video interesting. I’ flew from London to Sam Francisco on British Airways but didn’t like them. The food was stale and you had to pay for the inflight entertainment. Always look forward to your videos guys,
