He works as a process server. When someone wants to take you to court (to sue you or otherwise) you must be given a summons paper first. The process server is there to make sure you receive and acknowledge the paper's existence, because then there is no excuse to be absent at court. Sometimes people try to avoid process servers when they know that someone wants to take them to court. That's why Dale pretends to be something else before he delivers the paper.
That job is truly and highly risky cuz people that are being served will instantly take their anger out on the process server but the salary of a process server is at times and only at times worth the risk of anger getting taken out on you

Like they understand your just doing your job, and due to my states laws I can just throw it on their doormat if they refuse or get uppity. Crazy easy job if you can get lined up in it-pays about 50-200$ a contract

Process servers are fucking nuts. I had one try to serve my dad once (who was not home) when i was leaving the house. They tried to insist I accept it (not a chance, frivolous lawsuit and not in my name) Dude tried to chase me when i got in my car and left (he had to bust a u turn) and he NAILED someone that was doing 25mph. Cops came, dude tried to get the cops to force me to accept it. They refused and chewed dude out for putting people at risk of injury. It was so awesome it was like instant karmic justice

I am a process server, I get asked about this movie ALL THE TIME, no we dont dress up in costumes, no we just dont say "You've Been Served" and get out of dodge, we have to get them to sign that they recieved the court order or lawsuit and I have paperwork myself to fill out. Do I get called an asshole, yes I do, do people want to hurt me, yes, but I am the middleman, people want to go all King Leonidas on me. All you have to do is take the paperwork and call your lawyer, dont make a mountain out of a molehill, cause if you do assault me, its a felony its assault on an officer of the court.
If they properly identify themselves and I have properly identified them, if they reject it say at their house, I then tape it on their door, or if it as their work I leave it in their view. Only time I ever "dress up" is if I go into a building downtown and I am in a suit and tie to blend in
mike myfree Salary plus a little commission, it all depends I am not hurting financially that I can tell you. Is it easy, pretty much, you still have to get licensed. Go online and find out where in your state to take a class, you have to pass a background check, pretty much no felonies is all you dont need. No I havent been propositioned to get out of it. Sometimes it all depends on how the person is, usually I try to get them at work, but people still get mad at you

To be honest those people who are being served shouldn't be pissed at him, they should be pissed at the lawyers or judges or courthouses that hire him to simply deliver those subpoenas.
