I am going over the Pinephone, the next generation of open-source phones that have no spyware and tracking like the traditional iPhones and Android Phones of today. It is still in development, but I got my hands on one and I have to say I am impressed. Timestamps:

@المهاجر التونسي judging the pros and cons between RISC-V and Intel without choosing whether you use either processing for mobile or sever or desktop isn't very helpful. The RISC-V architecture changes the strategic options in it's an open standard unlike Intel's proprietary processor standard ISC. This puts a much different spin on the more fundamental issue of how to cheaply produce processor architectures.

@@jimkeith7099, I very, very rarely get to a point where my Galaxy Note10 dies. It's not hard. It is also new though, so that shouldn't be surprising. Maybe I'll be frustrated with battery life in a year or two.

@@johnbamber7374 It's about the phone's lifespan being limited by the charge cycles of the battery that is the PRIMARY argument against nonremovable batteries, not carrying aaround an extra cell as often as you hear that argument.

Another feature that people tend to forget is that phones where the back comes off and the battery comes out tend to be much better at handling being dropped, because the kinetic energy can be transferred away from the phone through the dreaded flinging of the back and the battery. Phones that glue all that stuff in have had to use stronger and stronger screens and still break quite easily (partly because they use the stronger glass as an excuse to make the screen thinner instead of more durable, but still) in many cases. I expect the PinePhone to handle drops without a protective case better than most of its contemporaries.

The main thing is to be as privacy focused as possible.. it's like saying not to lock up your valuables or your door because nothing is impossible to break into... It's about making you a more trouble than its worth in the event you can't make it completely safe which is normally the case

Pentagon, pres, three letter agencies.. non of them are completely safe either.. but they still take measures to be safer and reduce risk.. there is a point of picking your battles but I think Linux phone especially one you can completely power off is worth it.

As for me, the concept behind of this phone is the future. Instead of owning tons different devices and synchronize them using the Cloud, you carry just one device and transform it in a form factor suitable for you now, like a phone, a tablet, or a desktop. And you do not need to create an excessive traffic to synchronize your data. Tons of benefits.

I wouldn't say I have a problem imagining it, I would say I'm honest enough to admit that it's unlikely to happen. If Ubuntu/Canonical & Jolla (post MS buyout Nokia) both fail to do it an unknown company isn't going to. BTW I'm not the least bit opposed to a true linux phone, I'm just telling the truth.

Linux phones now a days feel like a brand new experiment in the 50's. We need at least 5 more years of dedicated developers (or a corporate) behind them to be ready to hit the market and replace android and iOS. I'd love to have one, but they're nowhere near ready.

I'd argue these first steps are the most important. Convenience will always win, sure, but a dedicated phone for hardcore linux users is the first step to take. Decent hardware and plenty of software updates could give a serious edge on these sorts of projects, as niche as they are. It's wonderful to see this finally happening

This phone isn't trying to compete with mainstream phones. It's for Linux users who want to carry over their Linux experience to a phone that they have control and privacy with. TL, the owner of Pine Microsystems has said that there wont be a new Pinephone released for three to five years, in order to ensure the software in this generation is well optimized, and to give time to select a new SOC that is the best balance of features and function.

Teasing us with a phone with our favorite OS isn't what linux users are looking for. Releasing a phone for linux "hardcore users" is just useless. I'd understand if they're releasing to those harcore users for early stage tastings.

i love the idea of a phone that you plug into a monitor and keyboard when you need a desktop, playing games, writing, and then unplug it and it goes into your pocket and you can use it as a phone. So freaking futuristic, unplug your computer, put it in your pocked and walk away.

In the name of practicality, wouldn't one of the first things to build for a phone like this is a compatibility layer for android apps through say pure apk or something? Does it have f-droid as a pre-installed app? I hate proprietary stuff as much as the next penguin, but sometimes you need to run that one stubborn thing that only works on that apk stuff.. at least if it's running in a virtual container where you choose what it can see and access, it mitigates the risk a little? However can the manjaro alpha build work with the built in wifi, bluetooth. Make and receive calls, sms's and take photos / video?

Not at this time. The big thing is the app integration and making it mobile. Yes, I can check my email on it through the browser, but I want really clean integration and that isn't there yet.

The software isn't ready. It's a early adopter unit called Braveheart specifically designed with getting the software ready and finding any undiscovered hardware issues (which there are a few that will have to be fixed).

I have 2 Samsung tablets and consider them to be a complete failure because they don't have a compass that works with Google Sky Map. I require compass, IR, and NFC and user replaceable batteries to be included in the standard set of features on all mobile devices... Can anyone tell me if the compass is missing or just turned off in software? Galaxy Tab 4 and A

Deepin wasn't designed for Phones. Manjaro is using Plasma Mobile which is basically Plasma Desktop with a Mobile shell instead of the regular desktop one.

Thanks for the video! I'm even more excited for the Librem 5 now. My phone contract was up and I almost considered getting the Pine Phone while I'm waiting for my Librem, but I got an el cheapo Android instead. It sounds like I made the right move, since the Pine Phone is not quite ready either. I'm happy that ssh works!

But does it have a lanyard hole so I can not put a lanyard on it but put random shit that I think I like but pisses me off after a while but I'm too lazy to take it off and it damages my screen and only comes off when the thing breaks leaving just a little piece of string there that's really dirty but now I have to find something to cut off the fossilised piece of string then I always loose my phone cause I'm used to feeling for the little shitty things on the strap, I miss those

Nice video, I am just starting too get really interested in tech like this. I know nothing about any of it but, it still is very interesting. I have an LG G6 and I've started to mess around with a few D.O. picked up a couple apps for educational purposes of course. But I think that not being in control of the all seeing eyes is a good thing. I've subscribed, so I'll be watching and learning hopefully, haha probably not but hey, keep up the good work sir.

I like your vision of the future. Have you looked into using Lineage OS, the open source Android alternative? That's the direction I'm leaning toward. The true test of these open source phones is going to be how well they work as phones. Otherwise, it's just a cool little tablet.

I should have gone deeper in this video as you can technically make calls depending on your carrier, but I didn't want to show it working on video just to have people disappointed it doesn't work for them. Give it a month or so for the rest of the carriers to be implemented before attempting this.

Wow, I'm glad I can do online banking on the PC since I heard about the limitations US people still have today. I never used apps and they only came out a few years ago anyway. Before that online banking was in a web browser only.

You start to really appreciate things only when you lose them. Things like being able to replace a battery or plug in your headphones.

I would love to see this phone improve over time. If it has full functionalities you would expect from a typical smartphone from Android/iOS then I would buy it without second thought. I’ll definitely check in periodically to see how the phone is improving over time.
