Just bought a VSX 820 at a thrift store for $10, with remote. Yippee! Half way home ( I live nearby so was walking) I realized something was rattling around in side, and a few of the casing screws were missing- -doh. Thought I was sunk. I opened it up and reconnected a plug someone had unplugged. Nothing. Then did a google search, and up came your vid. Long story short, I followed your guide and got the same DC 001 error. But then--a miracle. It seemed to clear itself and the system is working fine, at least on both stereo outputs and h/phones. So thanks a million for taking the time to create such a solid video. Much appreciated.

+Shaun Sanders If I had to guess the protection error occurred because of the disconnected plug. If I remember, I think it does have to be cleared even if the problem is fixed before the unit will power on. This is a case of someone messing around for no reason inside of the receiver at some point. But sometimes like you found out, these can be the best ones to find.

Nice job on a successful repair. Couple things worth noting: Power transformers are generally pretty reliable and don't fail often (though high frequency/voltage xformers such as those for backlights in monitors/LCD tvs do have a higher failure rate), the fuse would be more likely to blow on a lightning strike, preventing damage to the transformer anyways. Output Mosfets are a common fault for causing a receiver to go into protection mode and should be one of the first checks (Passives, in general, don't usually fail without the failure of an active, so usually its more productive to check actives).

Took me a year plus to digest this video. I started watching this video and could not understand at all. After doing some very minor repairs of resoldering and tipping of my solder station that fell of the floor causing it to not heating the solder tips.I successfully repaired my first device which is my soldering station. I went on to look into the basics of transistors with NPN and PNP. How to troubleshoot these . I got some basic understanding to transistors and went back to this video once more. I finally able to grasp into what the video is guiding about. I desoldered some of the transistors which are labelled B1560 , D2390 and C3964 transistors that had somesort of thermal paste stuck to the heatsinks. Tested them with multimeter on diode mode and turned out that they're all busted on my VSX821 pioneer unit. One note though, u need to get into the basics of understanding NPN and PNP of these transistors on how to troubleshoot them before attempting to know how to try your luck. And when desoldering, take extra care on not using desoldering pumps. I learnt my lesson using them since i'm not very good with soldering. These pcb are crap. the pump sucked off the copper sheets that were glued to the pcb.
@WaybackTECH
@WaybackTECH 4 года назад
Distinguishing PNP and NPN is very important, especially in these 50V circuits, make big smoke fast when you get them reverse, wooo! :) I have gotten them reversed, some of these companies cross references are crap, and they reverse the leads. That will get ya if you are not careful. I like the fine wire solder. For me it is easier to control the flow of the solder into the joint than using the standard fatter stuff. Heat can be a factor in lifting traces on the PCB, too much will make them lift, but the crap PCB from china are almost just a 1 shot wonder and they fall apart on a repair attempt even when you are being careful.

Dude I have been all over my Pioneer VSX-822 inside and out both the receiver and the schematics and all I could find wrong was broke solder joints that I resoldered. But it still never would function. After following your directions on resetting the fault code it now functions. GREAT, Thanks.

First real comment on a video since I've had a smart phone. listen I can't say thank you enough. 300$ pioneer tuner 3 years ago and the Andrew Jones speakers and subwoofer. Anyway my son spilled pop in it last year and it flicked on and off few times and shut off. So back then i about threw it out because it wouldn't power on. so adv surr and standby I found online and it worked.. so was all good till about 3 weeks ago... It would power on but play nothing. I tookl it apart to look for bad fuses because that's about the only electronic smarts I have for ideas. I saw your video once and skipped threw it and said yeah no way I can do or check all that.. I unhooked it and threw it in the garage. Bored one night I looked on here again and ended up here again. decided give it a lil more time watch and seen you check and clear the dc code... went to garage and said fuck it lets try. said dc-13. I CLEARED it and did it again then it said dc-0. I hooked up a speaker and she worked. so thanks so much for this video. love my stero systems so was about to drop 400$ on new tuner but I'll see how much linger I can get with this one.. Can't thank you enough.. Read a lot online and seen nothing about checking and clearing error codes...

Great video! I've had many things across my table for repairs. I watched this while troubleshooting my father's VSX 3800 that was packed away for about 15 years. There was no sound on the right channels. Turned out the contacts in the relay were burnt. That relay could be opened up with some careful cutting. I cleaned the contacts and bent the one slightly and she came to life. Your video was a big help!!!

My conclusion is that this must be a hobby and a passion if I were to relate your time and effort to your results. I used to do this as a teenager, but alas my patience is not the same. Seeing your deft knowledge and troubleshooting skills I am in awe and very glad I never tried, especially knowing there was 110 unshielded right on a board like that! Yikes!!!I had a VSX before and the thought of opening that thing was terrifying. Too bad the fancy ‘puter features are not even worth all that time you spent getting it work. This video was was so good that alone made this exercise worth it! Also, you should move near Electronics Plus so you don’t have to cannibalize your other donor gear!

Newer receivers with all the gimmicks aren't usually an upgrade in sound quality. The manufactures cut the budget to the amp and power supply to pay for all the the gimmicks and any associated royalty fees to use the products.
@GammaSierra
@GammaSierra Год назад
The end of low THD and high SNR receivers/amps started circa 2004. As you mentioned, manufacturers let sound quality suffer to hit low price points and still cram as many features as they can (wifi, Bluetooth, multi room, USB, etc). This receiver is a great example. In perfect working order, its THD is near 0.1%! That's shit! SNR is only double digits as well (98db). This is a wasts of time repairing in my opinion. Better spent on a Yamaha from the 90s

I feel like the speaker terminals on both channels came into contact. The relay was the weakest point I guess on that channel so it fried it's contacts inside. When i first got the unit to display the fault code, it came on with a volume of 48. I don't like how close the wires are to each other. I need to swap to some banana plugs for good measure. It is still working great though!

Now, on a more serious note, if you replace the output transistors, you should then set the idle current as incorrect setting will not only decrease the efficiency of the amp, it'll also reduce the life of the components. Here's how you do it: With no input and no load, turn the amp on and leave it 1 min to warm up. There is a 3 pin test plug on the board for each amp and a variable resistor. You need to adjust the VR so that the voltage across the outer two pins of the connector reads between 1.8mV and 2.2mV, ideally 2.0mV (Pin 3 +, Pin 1 -). That's it, done. It's very simple but very important.

De-soldering iron: Radio Shack used to make this model and you can still get them on eBay. Radio Shack carried the iron clad tips which lasted longer. I still have my soldering iron and this hooked up to a variac to control the heat and get the tips to last longer. I added a fairly long plastic hose in a 'U' and a vacuum pump to one over 30 years ago. The solder collects in the long plastic hose which is fairly easy to clean - or replace. Occasionally the metal tube gets plugged. A hand held propane torch can heat it up enough to allow the solder to flow out. With a vacuum pump, it does a great job of cleaning out component holes and even allows removing older style chips without damage. I included a foot switch for the vacuum pump. I still have it and use it on occasion. When soldering / de-soldering: A good electronics flux is your friend. Fluxing leads and wires prior to tinning can make a huge difference in quality of solder connection and they solder faster which means less heat on the spot.

hello mate! I've got a european VSX-527-K here. basically, had the same issues as yours, but on the rear right channel. on the main AMP5 assembly:- two 0.47ohm (R603,R604) resistors blown, KTA1024Y(pnp) (Q449) - KTC3206Y(npn) (Q460) - 2x KSA992Y(pnp) (Q455, Q456) transistors blown, and the 2SD2390(npn) (Q452) and 2SB1560(pnp) (Q458). after re-tuning the idle current on that channel, the amp module now runs sweet. the only problem left to solve, is the permanent "overheating" error followed but a shut down. apparently, there is a way to increase the threshold, but each VSX has a different key combo to change it. also, getting the service manual was a drama - after abit of research, the service manual for the VSX-1022/822 seemed fine (although the amp module is labeled for "VSX 321/421/521/821") sorry for 'spamming' your comments section with info, mate. but, seeing I was looking for info for my problem - others might gain from it (and save hours searching the web) ;) ref. the overheating error - any tips on how to get rid of it? even with the amp module removed and after a reset, it still 'plagues' me, lol. all I want to do, is listen to some Slayer. (doesn't everyone?) (: thanks for posting, btw - subscribed!

BadRonald1 some say the 50 series pioneers are better than the 80 series. I've been messing with this stuff since I was... gosh 10 maybe. use to get walkmans and car stereos at garage sales and fix them when I was a kid. I had a couple of those electronics learning kits that radio shack used to sell also. Figured stuff out that way. probably if I was starting out now, I would get some electronics kits, like an AM Radio kit, to put together. Those are less than $10 on ebay, and you can learn how to solder too with those. Start off with something cheap so if you screw it up, no big deal. Almost have to screw something up to learn :)

I used to hunt old TVs and radios that people were throwing away when I was 12. I'd take them home and fix them. Once they were working again I'd sell them in a yard sale. Often times people would walk by and remark that they had a device just like the one they saw there. I made enough money to buy my first computer that way. I also got myself one of the original NES consoles and my school clothes that way. It pays to ask the right question of the guy who owns a repair shop as a kid. I had a lot of fun figuring out how all that stuff worked.

@Watcher3223 10 лет назад
When one of the two power transistors for a channel goes bad, expect to have more to replace than just the faulty transistor. You will also have to replace the companion transistor and emitter resistors on the same channel as well as checking and replacing resistors and transistors on the pre-driver circuit serving the pair. The issue is that a power transistor failure places stress on a variety of components servicing the affected channel. The stress can be such that they can damage the parts to the point where they will no longer be in spec if not totally failing altogether. It's a miracle the receiver didn't fry the transistor(s) again and go into protection while you were testing it after the installation. Also, you may need to check the service manual for any required adjustments on the channel you repaired. Matching replacement parts may have slight variances that are enough to keep it from being a simple process of swapping bad parts for good.

I will keep my vsx-d411 receiver. Keep it simple. I think what happened is a speaker connection got shorted while connecting at back , or the speaker overheated and caused an arc in the relay and shorted the mosfet. I have had voice coils in 20 watt car speakers blow like a fuse and others would start to cook like a heating coil, but the amp was still good. A lot of people sadly just connect any old speaker and end up letting the magic smoke out of the parts. That is the thing about ebay. You never know who with whatever experience has looked at items first and gave up, or was a considered not worth fixing by a retailer. I find those newer amps are temperamental. Even slight things can trigger errors like turning on a light switch under the right conditions. The computer circuits can loose their "bits" and need a restart. A rule is always use these with a power strip and shut them completely off when not in use or when a long power outage is happening.

Great Video - very informative. I have a VSX-522 unit with a similar problem. I get the DC001 error when starting the system. However, if I disconnect all of the power transistors and put the amp board back in the unit there are no errors. I am fairly sure it is the output transistors. However, I am not getting a dead short across any of the terminals. They all seem to read ok (diode setting on multi meter) with the correct polarity set, but when I test the collector to emitter, I get a reading on the multi meter (diode setting) that there is continuity. I was of the opinion that it shouldn't show any continuity at all no matter how small. Can you advise if I am on the correct track here please. John

A few question. -Lookin from the way how u align those boards and got it hooked to the wall socket.. Will it short and boom ? I had my worse experience when i once place a board on top the other board, it exploded when i fire it up. Which is why i got really careful with pcbs. -I did not have the same problem as u did. But my receivers are not producing any sound to my speakers. I noticed the weird symptoms though. Usually when i fully powered down the system, took out the cables. Plugged it back in again and got it up, the volume would resets back to 30. Though this time, it did not reset. It seems to stay fixed at the last volume i shut down.

I just saw that video and I think the relais do actually come apart, the plastic housing looks like it's clipped on the rest of the relais. What you could do is use two knife-blades that you slide into either of the long sides of the relais, that should disengage the little platic hooks that keep the housing snapped to the relais and you should be able to slide it upwards. once you got it open, it's probably a good idea to clean the contacts with some contact spray on a piece of paper that you slide through the contacts a few times.:)

Check your final outputs when it comes to Pioneer and Sony's check your final outfits because they're not torious for causing these problems where things will not power on check your final output I tell this to everybody every single time I see one of these videos where people do not check their frontal outputs first they go through this rigmarole and they ripped the whole thing apart and they didn't bother to check their final outfits this is going to be one of those dragged on videos when you have to check your final outputs

I think the remote would be the AXD7612 or AXD7583. Probably a couple others would work.

Awesome video, I have the exact same problem on my sony strdn850, I cant figure out how to bypass the standby mode to the error code. I have the service manual but am not sure which button sequence to use to get it to turn on. My power button is constantly blinking. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

+acidraine0 I couldn't say for certain about your Sony, but a lot of receivers in general do not have the ability to bypass the protection. The blinking is about the only indicator there is on a lot of them. I have found out too these service manuals online are not always complete. I would assume if there was a way to bypass the protection with a button sequence, it would be talked about in the service manual.

I downloaded the manual but the bypass does not work, I traced all of the power and it looks like the main board, hdmi board, and front panel get power but the main transformer secondary relay does not engage for the high power side on the main board. I am getting all standby power but nothing at the big capacitors. I checked the output ac voltage and on the 5 pin I get 45/16/gnd/16/45, should these be a lot higher?
@acidraine0
@acidraine0 8 лет назад
I checked the ac detect cap and replaced that but no difference, there is voltage there and it does go to the cpu, weird thing is when I plug it in and the secondary comes on I get nothing, about 30 seconds later the green light blinks and if I unplug it the front display lights up for a split second and shows volume or something, can't really tell what it is its pretty quick. Any help would be appreciated, I have been poking around in here for a few days trying not to pull my hair out.

acidraine0 Voltages sound about right to me, just from other receivers and the voltages that end up coming into the main amp transistors that I have checked. This is just my experience, but when a receiver goes into protection and won't come out, it means there is a constant fault, usually a shorted main transistor on the amplifier. Probably should check those transistors and see if there is a short between the legs

None of the transistors are bad but I am missing a 7v+ going to the digital board. There is 7v at the IC but gets lost somewhere in between and my manual does not show anything along the way. Going to try and trace and see if I can find it.

I have Pioneer VSX921, suddenly notices there is not audio from SBR and SR channel; I checked that there is audio at relay PIN. Other channels are working fine. could it be a problem with relay? any logic that is not turning relay on. Thanks in advance

Greetings friend. The other day I got into the hands of the same device. I found out that the standby power supply burned out. But since it burned out, I can’t understand what voltage it gave out on the secondary winding? Do you remember how many volts there were? After the diode bridge, up to IL1117-3.3V?
