I just picked up this repaired Pioneer system from Dave. It's working perfectly. The sound from this little unit is perfect for a kitchen. Great work, Dave, thanks for taking on this difficult challenge. Great video!

A common fault in older players is an inability to play later tracks! To clear this; isolate the drive motor from any circuitry, spray some switch cleaner inside and use a 9v battery to rotate the motor back and forth a few times! It Must be separate from the driver chips or the 9v battery will fry them! Basically - there is dirt in the motor clogging it up and this affects the accuracy or the RPM.s. It occurs more during a lower speed - which is the later tracks on the disk. Hence the issue! I do this on All CD players I service whether it's the fault or not, it eliminates the possibility of the fault occurring and extends the life! Thanks again for a great and informative clip!

This old system has great sound in a smaller space like our kitchen. This is the second old cd stereo system of ours that you've repaired. This one had the additional challenge of having to deal with the degrading plastic from the 90s. You did a great job. Very well done video- thanks!

Yes the old plastic gets very brittle over time.

I have a system sort of like this,( it's amazing how similar the build design is!) Sony micro Hi Fi component sys. CMT-BX1. One thing the newer generation doesn't realize is MP3 quality music is not near as clear as the CD sound. I believe it's from the 90s . 6 ohm speakers. Doesn't sound bad at all! It doesnt sound like the old Pioneer I had from the 80s with Cerwin Vega Tower speakers. But it sounds a hell of a lot better than the stuff they manufacture nowadays for the General Public!

Good old-fashioned omnidegradeable ABS. That, along with Pb-free BGA ICs and the cheapest possible electrolytic capacitors from you-know-where have been responsible for a LOT of unnecessary landfill. :/

I had a Sharp stereo system (CD-SW440N) that had very similar characteristics of that micro system, even the remote controls of these two systems resemble a lot! The only difference was my Sharp could have played cassettes. Unfortunately, it died on me, and all the technicians I carried it to simply refused to repair it, because they said that there is a certain part that goes bad in those particular model/series, and replacement parts are not available for them. Ended up dumping the head unit and keeping the speakers. I have an iPod touch 3rd Gen. myself, the 8GB model. Really purchased it for the stereo aforementioned, because that was also iPod compatible. Never really used it much until I got my car. Just dumped some albums on there, and let the songs play in alphabetical order. To me, that's all they're good for now, nothing more, and I'm very grateful that mine still work, but, just like you, I wants nothing further than that from Apple! LOL Great video as always, and all the best for 2020 from me here in Trinidad and Tobago.

That fasia was a nightmare, very unforgiving :-( You have to be inventive with some repairs, it gets worse if it's that plastic that nothing can bond to. I find hot glue to be effective at times but the j.b weld is amazing stuff. Shame that pioneer didn't use a better plastic :-(

Closed captioning is hidden in line 21 of the vertical blanking interval of an analog NTSC signal that's why you need an RF modulator or composite input (unless your TV has an ATSC tuner and you're tuned to a digital channel). Pretty sure component video won't pass NTSC CC either. Not much the TV can do it can't decode data that isn't there.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 года назад
Yes I know where the data is hidden. I could plug the box into the video input, but I use that input for testing devices. I have it connected by component, and RF. When I want to use the CC I just tune to the RF input.

Speaking of things becoming obsolete due to firmware upgrades I often wonder how long im going to be able to use my bedroom TV for watching things like RU-vid and Netflix etc. Its an 85' Hitachi connected to a PS3 and im almost expecting one of these days for an update to wipe out functionality of one of these services. Ironically my mom is no longer able to watch Hulu on a circa 2014 Samsung blue-ray and LCD yet I can on my setup. I have a feeling im gonna need lots of adapters in the future since Roku recently dropped AV connections from their express+ and the old Hitachi only has RF anyway so there is a modulator needed there regardless.

Good little systems these, and plenty of use for them still as you said. Actually sold a NOS boxed Aiwa micro system last year, for £45 & that was to someone who wanted it to listen to cassette tapes on. The plastic is awful for "rotting" though, something systems from the earlier '90s back were a lot better for.

And remains a question about if is an original Pioneer made or an OEM just branded with any commercial name.

Did the CD tray open after you hit the power button? Reminds me of my 13.3 inch portable flat screen, I will try to change the channel and the menu pops up, or if I try and turn up the sound, the power will shut off. I wonder if a resistor changed value, because there is only three wires going to the button panel, but all the micro switches go through different value resistors. Maybe the Stand by - On switch has a resistor in circuit that changed value.

Either the plasticiser was insufficient from the factory or dissipated over time, causing the plastic to not be plastic anymore. I don't expect the modern "eco" stuff to be any better...
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 года назад
From what I understand, according to Panasonic, who's TV cabinets shattered was the fire retardant in the plastic formula was changed to meet ROHS regulations, and the new fire retardant caused the plastic to become brittle. They did acknowledge the problem when they started breaking left right and center.

Even if I don't own any apple products, I think at least a lot of their older phones/Ipods are pretty good lifespan wise. Compared to android phones, they supported them for a rather long time, and if apple releases a software update, the device will stay rather snappy for a long time. A good friend of mine still uses his iPhone 5 from 2012 right now. And only now the first apps are becoming unavailable due to the old OS. I love my android phones, especially with a custom firmware like lineageOS, however the early iPhones seemed like good devices. There are also many iPhone parts available and they are rather easy to open and repair. However starting with the iPhone 6 they are crap hardware wise. "bendgate", no 3.5mm socket, BGA soldering issues, battery issues, stupid "security" chips that prevent part replacement, just everything. And the worst, Apple does not want normal people to fix them.

Not sure that you know what you are talking about. Products made by Technics, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonicetc. Are generally not considered cheap. The system in question worked well for 19 or more years. Dave fixed it and now it's going right back into the same kitchen where it sounds great. Most people are not going to place a $1500+ system in a small kitchen.
