Inspired by disco's comeback, "We Are Family" returned to Pittsburgh after the Penguins won the NHL title in May 1991. So the Pirates brought the song back, where it has remained.
I was 18 that year the Pirates won and remember Stargell and Parker an co dance to We Are Family, in the dugout, after winning the World Series. I'm a lifelong Yankees' fan and a rocker, yet I rooted for the Pirates and dug the song. It just fit. 😎👍
People can say it was the song...but IMO, it was Pops who really unified this team. Willie was the leader and still crushing tape measure HRs this late in his career. It completely sucks that he had to share the 1979 MVP with Keith "frickin" Hernandez.
Ikr bro!…Song promotes unity, which I guess is corny in certain communities, yet the community wants unity amongst itself????…I was 9 yrs old and lived 1hr, and change from the city at the time. My GF, had a floor model tv, but would NEVER!!! watch his favorite team on it. He simply would sit on the back porch with his cigar, glass, or cup of ice tea...and radio. Miss him
1:53 I grew up a Pirates fan in the late 80’s and early 90’s and laughed when I heard this was the 1979 Pirates theme song. I thought at the time there’s a million songs better than this, but really there isn’t.
