I like this farm's conservation efforts. Growing trees that are already suited to drier climates is a really good idea. Much better than feeding water hungry trees and further decimating the local and distant aquifers.

Thanks for the excellent series Jan. It's crazy just how flat it is out there. I'm from central Minnesota and have never been to California so it's neat to see the different crops. It's crazy too just how flat it is there. I thought southern MN was flat but good Lord, there's NOTHING there.

I’ve really enjoyed this series Jan, and I must say you’re looking good in the California sunshine. I hope you and your family can vacation here sometime! I know vacations are very few on a farm but we can always wish, at least you and your sister should plan on a visit if possible. No matter what please stay safe and keep well!!!

I learned something interesting from my KSU Botany Professor who grew up in California on a almond farm. He said when they cut down the trees that were 40 years old that they had 200 growth rings. The reason that there were 200 rings is that they watered 5 times/year. That is when I learned that tree rings are not annual rings, but growth rings.

Being a northern california(bay area ) native it is hilarious people think of california for just hollywood ,sf and some stoner surfer when really the main reason for us being the worlds 5th largest economy in the world as a state is based on agriculture once you get out the main metros (LA and SF) it is nothing but fertile farmland and it’s 365 days a year a lot of it is grown on former ocean bottom before the big bang or whatever they call it these days ! A lot less bugs to deal with than the southern states and frost is not an issue if you are below certain elevation’s which most farms are . Central Valley is the lifeblood of the USA we would literally have a food shortage if it wasn’t for them and they get a rep for being the arm pit of california when really the feed the whole westcoast and the rest of the country !

My pistachio story. I was living at Redondo Beach, California and right after the Rodney King riots '92, which closed my business, someone stole my pickup from a locked garage. I got a call from unincorporated South Central LA that my truck was in impound about 2 months later. The cops had it towed because it was packed in front an apartment buildings fire hydrant. It cost me $175.00 to get it out of impound. The truck had parking tickets from cities like Inglewood, Hawthorne, and many others. I had to go to all those cities and present my stolen truck papers to get the parking tickets lifted. When I got the truck from impound, the truck cab was destroyed and loaded with orchard pistachios. I figured some migrants stole my truck. I no longer eat pistachios and I moved out of California in early '93 to beautiful free Texas. FREEDOM!

They are doing well planting the trees that take less water, but I would love to see more companion growing and not just miles of monoculture. The pistachio orchards could also be raising a meat crop with sheep or turkeys being worked in the understory without any damage to the trees and only a few extra inputs. Or another plant species or two could be introduced between the rows or under the trees. Even if they produced nothing marketable they would still provide cover for other wild life and help prevent bug infestations that often go along with monoculture crops.
@calineman
@calineman 2 года назад
you would be surprised how much water it takes to grow nuts. More than any other crop. 1362 gallons for 1lb of pistachios. Theres a farm in the same valley that uses as much water as the entire city of Los Angeles, 410,000 acre feet a year.

California growers, if you are under drastic water reductions due to drought and are ready to try something new, check out our subsurface water retention technology (SWRT). U shaped membranes installed at two depths below tillage depth are long lived and detain/retain up to 90% of applied water in the root zone. Gaps between membranes allow for deep percolation of excess water if needed. Dramatic increases in crop and biomass production have been documented by Scientists in 19 countries. This technology was developed at Michigan State University over the last 20 years for producers growing high value crops on sandy soils.
