Love the Turtle Toast test Mazie! Great explanation about the different uses. Especially for newbies it makes that confidence level jump up a lot! My Pro Series 2 has the same toast marks as your Austin XL. I love the different zones cause it lets you manage your cooks all that more!
Turtle toast. I saw on another guys channel that there is a small heat deflector you can get to deflect a lot of that heat from the burn pot to the left and right. He also found that the standard pit boss design allows for a lot of heat to come out the left side of the drip tray, then hitting the RTD probe making the grill run cooler overall than set point. They also make a plate the goes in place in the left side to fill that gap and allow heat to go around more naturally around the front and back. It seemed to help a lot for his pit. No matter how big you burn pot deflector, at higher heat there is always a hot spot right over it. Pit boss’ decision to have they sear feature and no standard deflector under really accentuates that hot spot in the middle. I’m glad you point it out because as a newbie many years ago I didn’t think much at all about radiant heat….and it DOES matter. Now I pretty much smoke everything on my top rack with a water pan under the lower grate sitting on the drip tray. Other higher heat cooks I do I the bottom or simple short cooks.

Speaking of cooking things that are outside the normal "bbq" items, we love baking our pizza in our pellet smoker, we put them in as the temp is ramping up to get some of that wood fired smokey flavor (works with frozen too). One person's turtle toast is another person's excuse to make chicken salad sammiches. Have an amazing rest of your week.
Turtle Toast! This video was exactly what I was looking for and so I thank you. I owned the original Austin XL for 6 years. Long story short I need a new one now (my fault and we will leave it there 🙂). I just seen the new ones and wanted to research them. Seen this video and it helped so much. My old one had hot spots and that bread trick was great! I was seeing if they also fixed the smoke flavor too. I always felt the old one didn't produce enough smoke flavor. Hope this one is better! Great video's!
I actually find both my kamado joe and kettle Joe give the meat more smoke flavor than my Louisiana founder pellet grill. But it is alot easier to smoke and grill on the pellet grill. and with a 1200 the surfoce is also a lot larger.

Turtle Toast Mazie! Just picked up one of these that was under a tarp and marked "Clearance" at my local Walmart. Box was a bit beat up, but you couldn't beat the price. My first smoker and me thinks I'm going to love it. Been a Weber kettle guy for many moons and wanted to upgrade. Don't know if I'm going to dump my kettle grill, gas grill and my Big Green Egg just yet, but time will tell. So glad I found your vids! Will finish assembly tomorrow and do my burn in. Want to smoke a turkey breast for Turkey Day! The adventure begins!
I love the toast idea! Im going to have to make some turtle toast one of these days! I have a vertical pitboss pro series V2 and love it! I have my thoughts where my hot spots are but the turtle toast will give me definite answers! Thanks for the great tip!
I just picked up the Austin XL Onyx Edition a few weeks ago. I only have a couple cooks on it so far but it has been great so far. I replaced a Louisiana LG900 that I had for 6 years. Turtle toast

Very interesting turtle toast. I just bought this same grill and did a bread test myself though I didn’t use nearly as much bread lol. Watching your video was very helpful in pinpointing all the hotspots. Thank you.
I called Pitt boss myself because I have the Savannah and they said you can't update to Bluetooth and wifi control because they didn't come out with it yet.
That's the page I took them to when I talked to them and they told me no and if if I order one it would be the same one that I originally have for my Savannah
Need some bacon, lettuce and tomato for your turtle toast. What's your take on the PB savannah? I like the fact you can dump the burn pot. Thought I'd ask you because I'm thinking about getting one. Thanks for the videos
I would love to have that feature! I’m bummed it’s not included on the Austin XL but it’s also not the worst thing to have to take out the grates to vacuum.

Thanks for the Video Mazie, It was informative. I have a Austin XL I got for the holiday's and the new one while nice it's not worth upgrading to me and I was thinking of it. I replaced the controller with one from Pit boss so I have 5 degree increments now and love the thing. Thanks again and keep em coming Turtle Toast
Turtle toast :] Sorry if this is a silly question, but I bought my dad this smoker for his birthday and he really wants to buy a cover for it. Do you know if the austin xl cover works for the onyx edition as well or if there is a separate cover? I tried googling it and looking it up online and I didn't have any luck.
Turtle toast! So I am in the market for a new pit boss. My Traeger just died. I am looking at either the onyx Austin Xl or Savannah. Which one do you recommend? My wife doesn’t care either way. She just wants me to make a decision. 😂
The Savannah has a couple more bells and whistles, if you’re wife is giving you the green light just go with the most expensive 😌😂. But really you can’t go wrong either way!
🎉🎉🎉 you answered my question. Thank you. Have you had any issues with temperature control? Ive seen a couple videos with someone saying if its in hot weather and in the sun. The grill has problems regulating the temp. Im in florida so i got all the sun and all the hot weather. TURTLE TOAST 😂
Thanks for watching!! I haven’t had any issues I found to be concerning. It might fluctuate 5-10 degrees but so does an oven. I’m in Utah so I’m dealing with a different climate but I’ve had no issues personally 😊
