This is my opinion and review of my Pitboss Austin XL. I bought mine the day after Christmas. I have not had any issues as of yet so i hope this helps you. This is an entry level pellet grill, but i love mine and it seems to cook as well as a higher level one.

I put two fire bricks one on each side. They keep the heat nice and constant and hold heat nicely. Try it

what are the measurements of each grate section? how many full racks of ribs will fit on the bottom grates? thx 4 the review.. also, are any of the products stainless steel?
@brandonluxford6871
@brandonluxford6871 5 лет назад
There are 2 grattes that are 12.5"x19" and 1 that is 8x19. I am guessing you can fit 7 or 8 full spares on there. The temp probe is stainless but other than that the rest is painted. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

Brandon, you mentioned the color of the Pit Boss pellets... (Walmart-Lowe’s) is there a burn difference as well? I just bought a PB Austin XL and will be putting it together tomorrow. Thank you for the review!
@brandonluxford6871
@brandonluxford6871 5 лет назад
I cant say for certain that i noticed a difference. I am leaning towards always getting them from Walmart only for the reason of a possible better flavor. It may only be in my head but like i said, im not sure. For me, maybe it may also be a visual thing. The package is definitely nicer at Walmart. I hope you like your new Pitboss. I love mine. Thanks for the comment.

The grease at the bottom is good. Just use some paper towels to get most of it off and spray PAM on the rest of the inside that doesn't have grease on it to help coat it for rust protection

vtown 707 I’ve had my grill up to 550 degrees with the sear zone closed and with it open I’ve had it over 700. I never took a temp reading of the over all but my griddle plate was well over 700 when I checked the temp on that. Are you just wondering for searing purposes?

Don’t know where you’re at but don’t think you’ll come to SoDak to measure a grill. Jokeing. The XL is 62.4 inches right to left. The Deluxe right now at Wally World for $369 is 44 inches left to right. Doesn’t have the shelf on the right side. Actually smaller, left to right than my old Weber Genises 1000. Thanks for the tips. Your video was really good. I do admit I really like my Pit Boss VS.

@@johnmanthey2683 i live in Michigan. I wish all of the barrel sizes were the same. It would make it so easy. To be honest, when i did mine. I ran my rod through my sear plate and used the rod to scribe the inside of the barrel. I drilled from the inside out. It just so happens it was right in line with the shelf. That is how I would do yours. I would love to come there but i would need to do some pheasant hunting while I was there
@johnmanthey2683
@johnmanthey2683 5 лет назад
Big source of revenue for SoDak is when the “out of staters” come for opening season. Most SoDak hunters hold off till about the 2nd or 3rd weekend when the “tourists” go back home. You say Michigan. Well, I’m a native born Buckeye. We all have our problems. I won’t hold it against you for that. My mom’s sister, aunt and uncle, lived in Muskegon. As a kid we used to go up at least once a year. Went perch fishing with a cane pole and a bobber on a big long pier. No limits in those days. My mom’s younger brother and aunt had a summer cabin up there someplace. I think Pikerel Lake, not too sure on that. Take care.

I find that thermopro is alot more convenient because i can bring it inside and see the temps from wherever I am without going out to the grill. I will use them if i am doing alot of food and need to check a few different temps. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for the comments

Hopper Grate trick. Take all the screws out of the hopper grate EXCEPT the 2 closest to the barrel on either side. Those two screws are now the "hinge" screws that you can lift open the grate to move/remove the pellets. Then with the grate open put the screws back in their holes and buy nuts to tighten the screws in place then lower the grate so that it rests on top of the screws so you can use it and open it.
@brandonluxford6871

I have seen that method before. I just took it right off. I am not to concerned wiyh getting my hand caught in the auger. Thank you for the comment
@RossMalagarie
@RossMalagarie 3 года назад
@@brandonluxford6871 Yeah i guessed it was if large stuff that was not pellets was either in the pellet bag or from someone putting it in there. The only problem is with the grate you have to use a long stick to move the pellets into the auger. This way I have the grate to keep out kids hands and large other objects and I can still open it to move/remove the pellets but whatever works best for you. Thanks for the informative videos. Later

This grill is tripping our GFI to where we cannot use it, is there a fix to this?
@brandonluxford6871
@brandonluxford6871 5 лет назад
I know of some people upgrading the breaker a little bit. Are you running it off of a small extension cord, because I know that has an effect on how it draws? How far away is it from the outlet? That also plays a role in popping the gfi. I hope this helps and sorry I am not a huge help

@@brandonluxford6871 cool.. I have the pit barrel cooker and it is great! Meat comes out very well and the smoke flavor is there. I would like to try a pellet smoker for doing jerky and snack sticks or sausage. Since those the temp can go very low. That's kind of my plan.. 🙂👍

@brandonluxford6871

I do if i need extra. I like my Thermopro because i can see if the temp drops from inside. The 2 that come with it are great dont get me wrong, but I like to see my temp from inside without going out all of the time. For overnight cooks it has an alarm to let me know if my food or temp is out of range.

Brandon where did you come up with the metal temp probe "keepers" that hold your temp probe off of the grates?
