It's relatable honestly. Not solely for the intended message about living and enjoying all of life, but more so that completing your life goals before you die leaves you kind of hollow inside. It leaves you asking yourself, what now? When I complete a major life goal I'm usually depressed until I find my next goal to work toward.

Because you're (ppl in general) making life about filling out a check list instead of just living, and you're surprised when filling one of the bigger squares or the last one doesn't put you in a permanent happily ever after mood/mode.

@@agiomagikos It means emotionally it's what you've always wanted and that overwrites what you rationally need. I'd always wanted to live in Seattle when I was 20. That dream was steady until I turned 25. Then at the height of the pandemic I had to move in with an ex of mine who had moved to Seattle. Ot was that or be homeless. When I got here to Seattle I had that same blunted thought. "This is it? Really??" And it's because I looked at this city with an unhealthy amount of love and awe. I was enamored by this place. I had plans for it I knew I may never get but really wanted. When none of that came to fruition and I was just.. in the city and had technically achieved my dream I felt nothing for it. So. . . yeah, there's an emotional and rational aspect to having dreams.

while Joe is dying the screen shows “Disney Pixar Presents:” but then it continues with the movie. No credits or anything after that screen until we get to the very end of the movie. When Joe Gardner walks out of his apartment alive that’s when they show the Title screen “Soul” because that’s when the story begins, now with his knowledge to live his life every moment.

I caught that too; I thought it was lovely. A little part of me noticed they didn't put the title card after the "presents:", but I was quickly whisked away by the story and I didn't think of it again until the title appeared at the end. I can't put words to how it made me feel, but it did its job. It was outstanding, a really effective touch.

A piece of symbolism I noticed was when Joe meets Doraphia Williams there’s a shot of her that goes down to her waist you think Joes looking at her but really he’s looking at her instrument the symbolism being that rather then focusing on humans like is mother or his friends he’s focusing on music

“I’m gonna live every minute of it”... he’s gonna be present in his life. The barbershop scene was him feeling regret at never having taken the time to get to know his barber beyond that one topic and seeing how open and free 22 was in his body. As someone with social anxiety, this really hit home. 22 felt like she was not enough as herself, but she was free and engaging as Joe. Joe was too busy being singular focused on music and missed all the other relationships he could have had.

i think that this movie gives permission to people to live their lives without accomplishing some big goal that changes the world. It gives permission to experience and love the small things like eating pizza or watching the leaves fall or feel the wind from a grate. Joe reaches his dreams and realizes he could’ve felt just as much joy in everyday life. The mundane and the beautiful. Your life doesn’t have to lead to “greatness”. The reason for living could just be...living.
@drewstaser9726
@drewstaser9726 3 года назад
And I think that is what 22 saw too. She got all these famous big shots, and thought she had to be some person who changed the world and made a name for themselves. Many people think the same way as she did, but it is okay to die as an average person as long as you are happy the way you lived.

You put into words exactly how I felt after watching the movie. I've never had any big dreams, aspirations or even hobbies, so when I see people doing great things or just chasing their passions, I kind of feel like I'm missing out or there's something wrong with me, much like 22 did. I don't think I've ever seen something acknowledge that perspective before, so it was really comforting.

this movie’s message was honestly such a breathe of fresh air because most movies end with a message like “follow your dreams” or “you can do anything” or “you can change the world. go do it.” while this movie’s message was “go live. it doesnt matter how you do it but just live.” and to me at least that is such a beautiful message. it makes me happy to be alive which is so important.

I loved Soul's approach to the "live life to the fullest" message, because most stories that tackle this message usually have this implication that if you're not doing something big, like skydiving or running with the bulls, you're wasting your life. But, that sort of thing isn't accessible or even desirable to everyone. But Soul says you can live life to the fullest even while doing the most mundane things. 22 was living to the fullest while doing simple things like walking down the street or watching leaves fall because she was just appreciating being alive.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet, but the scene where joe is trying to save 22 from being a lost soul stuck out to me. All the faces shouting hurtful things at her felt like a take on anxiety or depression. She was trapped in her own bubble not listening to joe, as these people she looked up to told her how much of a failure she was. It just felt so...real I guess. I don’t really know how to describe it. (Also this movie made me start crying lol)

I agree! I think of that scene also pertaining to individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts. 22 is so cynical about life and feels like it's not worth all the trouble because of how many of "the greatest mentors ever" told her that she isn't worth living. Then, she finally gets a glimmer of hope living in Joe's body and experiencing all the little things of life with so much curiosity and wonder, only for Joe to tell her that she STILL wasn't enough. And being told one too many times, instead of brushing it off or covering it up with sarcasm, she got consumed by it and all the negativity she's been fed her whole nonexistence. She pushes away everyone trying to help her because she felt that she wasn't worth all the trouble. But Joe assures her that she IS worth dying for, that she deserves to live. It makes me cry every time.

The joke about Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln is that Jackson was a president before Lincoln who accomplished less and was a horrible person to boot. To me, "the ocean" is a life's goal, an existence's sole object and reason to be. When the older fish says "THIS is the ocean", it means that the current state of said life is the reason for it to exist, the purpose of life isn't achieving something or getting somewhere. The purpose of life is living, and every single experience that comes with it. When the younger fish says "this is water, I want the ocean" the fish means that it wants to find its destiny, the objective of its life, to make life meaninful. While it fails to realize that it's already happening. Because, again, the only purpose of life is to live. When Joe remembers all little moments in his life and all the little pleasures that 22 had he finally understands that he didn't have to look for the ocean, he was born in it.

As a person who battles with depression, this movie hit me hard. I often think of the impact I will leave on the world when I die and how people will remember me. I draw to help me forget about everything stressful in my life, and I sometimes get caught up in the monotony of the day, not wanting to waste a second that I could be drawing. I fantasize about what people will be inspired by when I'm no longer around... what impact I'll have exactly. Who will my messages reach years from my departure? Joe says his reason to live is music, he has to find a gig, something people will remember him by or his life wasn't worth anything. But this whole time throughout the movie, he had people and experiences all around him that already gave his life meaning, just in a way he hadn't noticed. His mother, the barber, his students. He is a part of all of their lives. Even the young man who got him the gig in the first place, saying it was Joe who had inspired him to get where he was. Joe didn't have a set purpose when he was born. Not a particular reason to be here. Nobody does, we just do whatever it is we like, go down any path we choose. Sometimes those paths are closed, but that's okay too. We open and close possibilities for others every day, and others for us. For a long time I thought the only thing I will be good at is drawing. That when I'm gone the only thing people will see is pretty pictures left behind like after images of a sudden bright light. But that's just not true is it? When Joe dies his mother won't just forget him will she? His students won't just forget him. Even the barber will remember and they'll all say things along the lines of "remember when Joe-?" And that story might make someone laugh, or another cry, or inspire someone to do something that will lead to something else. Nobody's impact will ever be greater or lesser than someone else's. You can't put weight on your life, or it will only be your shoulders aching in the end. Joe didn't forget all his father had taught him the moment he passed did he? He may not have been a huge name on a bill board but he was a husband and a father, and a guy who just loved music. You don't have to exist for other people. Just exist in the moment, and see what life has in store for you.

This this this!! I completely agree with u and some people don’t understand and ask why are we making the movie so deep. Its because it IS! Dorothea mocked Joe for being a middle school teacher earlier in the film, so the ocean story doesn't seem to imply that he's already successful as a teacher, but that he's already living and shouldn't expect to "feel more alive" when doing things he's put on a pedestal.

They spend much of their free time to help their students and they get genuine emotional investments. They do one of the hardest and yet most rewarding jobs whereby they get little thanks. They oftentimes do not get to see how their efforts pay off as their students leave. Everyone needs to be kinder to teachers. Whether that's a box of chocolates on their birthday or just behaving in class and trying your absolute hardest.
@cherriegetison6093
@cherriegetison6093 3 года назад
That's one thing I didn't like about the movie. There's no point where Dorothea realizes she was wrong to belittle middle school teachers, and her not being challenged on her statement gives off the impression that the movie as a whole believes what she's saying, that somehow teaching middle school is a step down. It could be the result of the movie lifting from the experiences of the artists working on the movie. In the animation industry, going to art school and then not being able to get hired at an animation studio is seen as a failure, even if that knowledge is put to use elsewhere. The movie makes it clear that people can still be happy even if they don't get their first career choice, so it's nice to see a battle against that mentality. Still, if your movie has a character ragging on middle school teachers, that character needs to be put in their place!

[slight spoliers] Cause maybe just the small things in life (like just enjoying food, taking walks, talking to people, taking in the scenery - those little things that 22 did in the movie) are what matters to some people. And I love it that the movie takes note of that. Being a college student who was basically pushing myself to be 'big', trying to major in stem cause I thought it was what it meant to achieve 'big' (I wasn't in it for the money; I thought doing inspirational/amazing things is what it means to be in life), but ended up seriously depressed from studying stem.

This movie saved me too. As a college student, I struggled to find my 'spark' (or desired major). I was envious of my fellow classmates who seem to know what they want or were ambitious. I initially studied in a stem major cause I thought achieving big was what it means to have a great life. I ended up getting depressed from my stem major and after a year break, I changed my major into something I liked more. When I finally picked my desired major, I found that I wasn't super ambitious as some of my college friends (I wasn't lazy; my grades are either high B or A). One of my college friends said it seems like I an not ambitious (aka piling on 5-6 college classes to finish gaduation as soon as possible like they did) enough, and that statement gutted me. People always tell me to 'dream big'. I think it is admirable for people to dream big. But somewhere in my heart, I thought 'what about the people who couldn't or failed to dream big?'. But this movie made me realized if you couldn't dream big, you ain't a total failure. Even if you are still lost or just don't have a spark at all, you can still live your life to the fullest.

That alone put this movie in at least mid tier range for me Edit: also, it's not uncommon for jazz clubs (except NYC which is pretty much the center of it all) to have teachers play in trios, quartets, quintets... in fact most of the "professional jazz players" where I grew up were also college professors, or even middle or high school band directors

That stuck out to me too. Very much not from NYC, but I was in band myself (and still am in college) and my directors are all amazingly talented people that have shaped who I am. Didn’t knock it down much for me personally, just made me raise an eyebrow. And I really wish they had gone deeper into how he’s affected his students, that would’ve been a real tearjerker for some former band kids.

This is my take on the "ocean" metaphor: I think what she's saying is that the thing (ocean) that you are searching for and obsessed to find, could be something (water) that you are already in or already have

No movie has ever made me think about the meaning of life like Soul did! This movie completely subverted my expectations! My interpretation of the movie was this: live life as a whole and enjoy the smaller things instead of focusing on one specific thing. 22 had many "odd" interests in things like food, the subway, and the little helicopter things from the trees while Joe was super focused on getting to his gig and pursuing music. Then at the end when Joe is given a second chance at life, he says he's going to live every minute of it. That's why I believe the message of the film is take your time to enjoy life because you life is short and you never know when your last day on Earth is

The story that Dorothea told reminded me of the quote, "You don't know your in the good old times until you've left them." Meaning that you can be swimming in water all your life looking for the ocean similar to how you can be living your life whilst always looking for something better. Joe is busy looking forward in life, he is looking for the ocean, instead of loving the life he has and just swimming in the water.

The fact that this movie leaves so many questions up for interpretation is a direct parallel to real life because even if we think we know what we are doing, the universe can throw a curveball and flip everything upside-down. Like with Covid-19. Soul came out at the perfect time in my opinion, because it teaches us that life won't always give you what you want, and even if it does, it might not make you feel whole. Soul is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time because of the sole fact that every time you watch it, you can find a new meaning to the symbolism.

Having said that I think my interpretation of the film is that your life isn’t one specific path and you don’t need to feel like a failure if things don’t work out the way you hoped bc there’s no pressure put on you to achieve “your one purpose in life.” This movie rly hits home bc I’m constantly stressed abt my own dreams and not achieving them. And water is just ordinary living, whatever situation we are in. So the young fish thinks they have to go somewhere or do something to enjoy life, be valuable, whatever, but the old fish knows that life happens where you are and the purpose can be found everyday.

Minor detail: I consider it as coincidence Soul rendering style matches Emotion rendering style from Inside Out. However, I am interested in any hypothesis/theories wtf is happening in character heads... I mean, we have classical body switch, however, Inside Out have established 5 ruling emotions model, and when 22 jumped into body must mean that unborn, inexperienced emotions got access to emotion control panel of adult human (newborn has 1 button, adult has fully operational spaceship flight control room). We definitely know Soul appearance match appearance of body it resided in, and the same is truth for Emotions (in is clearly stated in Inside Out, in film and in post credit scene, and it is applied to animals as well). Do we assume Souls and Emotions are sibling aspects made from the same matter, or Soul is mix of emotions, memories and whatever else? Also, we 100% know that grate beyond is not complete destruction of the soul, it was established in Onward by the fact that brothers managed to summon their father (somewhat successfully). Which being is responsible for such souls (Jerry, Terry, whoever?) is not clear. Also questions: does Cars have similar Souls/Emotions? They are technically alive.
@drewstaser9726
@drewstaser9726 3 года назад
I think when the switch happened, 22 had a baby's emotional capacity and the body of an adult. So the full range of emotions, but not the capacity to deal with them, which is most clearly seen when she breaks down in New York, and hides from the world saying "I will sit here until I die." She also then exhibits that child curiosity and wonder when she sees simple parts of human life. But that is just what I think, and could be totally wrong.

The moment that broke me was when Joe was playing the piano and replaying all of 22’s “ordinary” life moments in his head. My dad, who was sitting next to me, whispered: that’s what life is all about, the “little things.” I realized, in that moment, that this was the perfect quarantine movie, and tears came streaming down. Everyday life during a pandemic is terrible, and at least for me, my perception of time is way off: a week ago feels like years ago and I can’t even remember what I did yesterday. We remember the special little moments, like blue sky and music and love. Since watching it last night, I have started looking at life - especially during quarantine - in a completely new way, The morning before I watched the film, I was dreaming about my Disney trips and thought about how, right when I wake up the morning I leave to go to the happiest place on Earth, I tell myself to truly live in the moment and be mindful so I can remember everything and savor every millisecond of my time I Walt Disney World. And then I realized, why don’t I live like this all the time? Live every moment like it’s special and is something to be celebrated so that when there are truly special moments, you are fully open and ready to experience them with everything that you are. Thank you, Disney and Pixar, for creating another story that will stay with me forever. ✨ “We do not remember days, we remember moments.” ~Jennifer Niven, All the Bright Places

I took "the ocean" to mean an "aha!" moment where he feels happy in his life. Joe is looking for "the ocean"-- he is looking for a big purpose, but fails to realize that he is already happy-- that he has had a good life, and that he is "already in the ocean". "Water" feels normal to him-- it's the idea of "the ocean" that excites him, not the real thing, because again, he is already in it.

I think what Dorothea was trying to tell Joe with the ocean/water story is that Joe kept striving for this "big break" when his life would finally begin, but he's actually living his life now. He was going through life not appreciating the little things that make life special because he was so hyper-focused on his goals. 22 noticed and fell in love with life's little details.

Haven’t you had enough of the deep thoughts in 2020 already. Better to give people hope. Show me a Joe going to heaven and meeting his father again. Show me a Joe getting a second chance at life, marrying Lisa and giving birth to 22. Show me Joe going back to his class and telling his tuba protégé to do whatever she wants to do with her life, only to reveal that she’s pregnant with 22 and has decided to have the baby. Show us life. Show us death. The important thing is, show us something hopeful.

@@christianali5431 Dying would have certainly been more in tone with the message of the film, but I don't think meeting his dad would have been. The story isn't really about their relationship beyond him bringing him to a jazz gig and giving him what he believes is his 'purpose'. He functioned more as a plot mechanic than anything the way he was fleshed out, or lack thereof.

What I got from this film is , just because you’re good a something, does not mean you have to do it for the rest of your life. It’s good to do stuff different. It’s okay to like something but you gotta make room for other interest too. and to not only focus on that one thing you’re good at/ love, or you’ll forget about everything else, you’ll overlook everything. Don’t take life for granted

This was incredible to watch, and the teacher in me loved it the most! The messages I took away the most was to enjoy simply living, and that mentors/teachers/etc. are VITAL to our lives. Joe was teaching 22 while they were trying to get him his body back, even if it wasn't super obvious. He was teaching by example and experience, which is one of the best ways to teach! But in the same way, 22 was teaching Joe how to fall in love with life again, and how to look for MORE than 1 spark, since sparks can come and go. I don't think I can quite put it into words, but I don't think it's necessary to tbh. There really are many messages to take away from this movie, and I'm happy I watched it!
