@evamarias8896
@evamarias8896 3 года назад
I agree, we need to break down the stigma in movies that “animation= childish, live action ealistic = adult”. It’s been getting worse lately and Disney’s push with their live action remakes aren’t making that better. But this movie is a breath of fresh air. I hope we can get similar movies that treat animation right, aka a medium to tell ANY story, and not “something to distract kids with for 2 hours”.

I feel like this is something that international markets get, but westerners don't. Hell, look at anime, in which a good amount of these shows can be deemed inappropriate for those under the age of thirteen because of intense action scenes instead of *just* because of raunchy humour and gross out moments. Edit: and that's not even getting into stuff like studio ghibli, which is just artistic, plain and simple.

No credits or anything after that screen until we get to the very end of the movie. When Joe Gardner walks out of his apartment alive that’s when they show the Title screen “Soul” because that’s when the story begins, now with his knowledge to live his life every moment.

I think Pixar intended this movie to be more like ratatouille in the aspect of it being more for adults than kids Like of course, ratatouille has the cute animals and humor, but at the center of it, it’s a deep story about finding and pursuing your passion- even if people think you’re not fit to do it. Same with Soul- I just think Pixar made this for the older people (Same with The Incredibles 2 when they used some cursing and bigger themes)
@ashuraconla2550
@ashuraconla2550 3 года назад
I think so too. The themes Soul as are something that adults and teens can understand more than kids.
@TheEmpireDabsBack
@TheEmpireDabsBack 3 года назад
Yes exactly! And I hope with the success of Ratatouille, and hopefully the continued success of Soul, that Pixar will be more confident in releasing movies with these more mature plots. I think like most of us, kids who literally grew up with Pixar movies, the studio has grown older and more wise as well. They understand we hold the Pixar style very close to our hearts and want to keep watching their productions and crave a deeper and more mature plot. I seriously hope this is a trend that continues. Definitely still make movies geared towards children but also from here on, don't be afraid to go all out with your stories. We want Pixar with no limit but imagination.
@pixelation6224
@pixelation6224 3 года назад
I agree. The movie appeals more to adults than small children, but small children can still watch it and get humor out of it with things such as the 22/joe body switch and the part when Terry freaks out some guy in an alleyway. The plot can be handled by all ages, but the lesson is for older audiences to realize. I think this kind of formula for a movie is great for Pixar, and they should definitely do it more often. The last time it happened was when-Ratatouille?

I sometimes even feel like I need to find my purpose despite me not even living through a fourth of my life. I also felt like Joe should have died at the end, but I'm also kind of glad that wasnt the case? I started picking up some themes of suicidality around the point when Joe didn't feel fulfilled after his dreams came true, and having him just give his life away at that point (even though it would have ultimately been for the benefit of another person) felt iffy when they teased that possibility.

As a deeply religious black parent: -I can confirm that this was an excellent take on existentialism and I appreciate that they weren't so concerned with building a 'believable' religion of their own for the setting, and also not entirely sterilizing the concept of oblivion, or ridiculing the notions of religion, even going so far as to include shamans and astral plane talk in it, without trivializing characters that are typically disregarded as lunatics in comparable pieces. -They did a good job of acknowledging some of the black experience, without focusing on it, staying neutral enough that I don't believe it would alienate my non-black friends. I too appreciate that the movie was about a middle aged man who looks like me, without sanitizing my culture to the point it's unrecognizable, but also not focusing too much on the struggles of being black as that would neither benefit, nor harm the movie from where I stand. -My kid checked out the second the movie was no longer about cute, colorful, fuzzy wisps. I certainly feel it was made more so for adults as the message is unambiguously about uniquely adult concepts (not saying that pre-teens and teenagers don't struggle with existentialism. I was a pre-teen myself when I grappled with the concept of my own mortality, and I'm no intellectual outlier. The issue of contemplating existence and purpose vs belonging and acceptance generally doesn't manifest until a certain level of maturity) so unless you at least hold a modest understanding of the issue that the message that this movie is trying to provoke thought around, I think it'll be lost on you.

He made the great point that Joe dying would have made his character development almost pointless. Sure, he was accepting of death at the end. **SPOILERS** I’m personally really glad that they didn’t let him die at the end. Not only would it be antithetical to the message of the film of making the most of life, but there’d be the horrific implication of one of his friends/family members/Connie (god forbid) finding him dead slumped over at his piano like 3 days later. Which is obviously waaaayyy too dark for Disney to ever do. My biggest problem with the ending is that I was hoping there’d be some kind of nice moment of Joe walking down a street and seeing 22 with her family and just a brief smile of recognition passed between the two of them. But no, she looks like she lands somewhere in Central Asia (which is fine) but I think it would have been kinda neat if somewhat schmaltzy.

Yes, there was a huge emphasis on the importance of living life in the moment and enjoying the small things, but for me it was more of a theme of: love your life as it is, don’t get too caught up in trying to achieve what you think your “purpose” is, likewise don’t get too caught up in feeling unhappy if you haven’t achieved it.

Joe should not have died. The message of the story isn't about death. The message is essentially "It's never too late to change your perspective on LIFE." It's a sort of retelling of "It's a Wonderful Life." Joe began the film so caught up in what he wanted, that he didn't appreciate anything else; he was upset over everything until he got his dream gig. He then died BECAUSE he was so caught up in his elation that he was literally ignoring the living world around him, and that killed him. He then meets 22 who, by body-swapping with them, gets an outsiders perspective on everything he'd been missing because of how hyperfocused he was on the gig: he learns to appreciate the passion of his students, he learns to appreciate his barber, and he learns to appreciate all the little things in New York including the little whirlygig seeds. The story isn't about the physicality of life and death, but the mental state (which is why they have the different mental states of the living enter the metaphysical world). They just use a Joe's literal death as a metaphor. In the end, Joe IS ready to die. He reexamines his life and realizes that he actually did live a fulfilling life. You could argue that he learned that lesson by sending off 22, but this isn't 22's story; it's Joe's. And I like how the ending left his future ambiguous. Because it doesn't matter if he chose the gig life or if he chose to be a teacher; what you do in life isn't important because no one has a "purpose." The message the story is trying to share is that living is the goal, and it's never too late to be "born again" like Joe almost literally was. He, like everyone living now, always has a chance to reexamine life and learn to appreciate every day we have. And, tbh, that's a lovely message.

This movie felt human. I love how while 22 was in Joe’s body, she was constantly looking up, meanwhile Joe himself was always looking down or ahead. Down at piano, at music sheets. He looks ahead at where he is going, his dreams of playing with Dorothea. (Funny enough the first time Joe wasn’t looking down or ahead he fell down the manhole) Also the little times 22 looks at the dad and the daughter walking, the two ladies talking outside, the seeds falling off the maple tree. It’s all these amazing, beautiful, human things, that Joe himself has been missing by not simply looking up and around! How I feel about this movie is hard to put into words but it’s being able to capture and convey these little human moments that are my favorite part of Pixar movies.

Idk how old you are, but once you hit your 30's, you have more life experience and skill to realize that you only live once and it's ok to fuck up. Life is way too short to live pleasing someone else (besides God, but that's besides the point and of you're not spiritual I'd be happy to explain what I mean because I don't mean it the organized religious sense.) King Solomon was 100% right when he said "Enjoy your miserable life as much as as you can" and "Enjoy everyday, for nothing lasts forever" (I'm paraphrasing). Please live pursing your passions and talents. You weren't put here to be mediocre, and being mediocre is following someone else instead of yourself. Trust yourself. Also, I agree about the Black character. Especially since "soul" is an overarching concept in our culture and we're well known for our "soul" lol.

I really liked this movie. I liked the point of the barber; he didn't reach his dream of being a veterinarian but he still found happiness and fulfillment in his life doing something else. I feel that's a message not told very often. My cousin also said she thought Joe should have died at the end but I understand that his story wasn't really about reflecting on his life to let go, it was about him learning to live again and to not be so focused on one thing that he ignores or overlooks everything else. So I like that once he truly learned that he was given his life back. I loved the way the black people were animated. From the various hair types and textures and styles, various body types and facial features and skin tones, even the palms of the hands being lighter, it was awesome to see. I liked that the movie didn't have an antagonist or villain and that it is so philosophical.

They understood that he felt nervous since he was young but they tried to explain that what's happened, has happened and that's ok too. None of the otherworldly characters make life and death seem to be scary or final, they are calming and give you the feeling of a natural life cycle, even if it'd just their jobs to make sure everyone goes through it. It happens! I remember, I worked so hard and studied so much to get an english certificate and I remember expecting the results in February (the tests were done in December) and then I got my result! An A. That's it. I went through all of that and got the best grade you could, got a certificate that was higher than my level but that's it. I'm not satisfied with this. I'm happy and little proud. But that's it. I always keep my expectations low and I really didn't think I'd get an amazing grade. But it was all very boring. I wanted more. I felt that the results were great, more than that, amazing so why am I so indifferent? This isn't the only time it happened tho. It happened when I found out I passed the entrance exam for my secondary school too. For some reason those feats didn't make up for the effort I put in. Joe trying and trying and trying and finally getting the part and finally performing. It's dissapointing. It's not as liberating as you thought it would be. When I was abke to open up to my friends, when I get a good grade in a project, when I was able to finally break my average in my english final test, when I was able to come back from school on my own. They are very little, but those moments I'm incredibly proud of, becaus ethe effort I put in was much more important to me than the effort I out in other things. It took me a while to figure out, but I realized that the things I was most proud of were things I truly wished and kept wishing for them. The english certificate was a "yeah at this point I should get one" and so I put the effort in and that was that. Joe went through all that and I think that along the way he forgot why he wanted to do that, but the only thing he knew is that he wanted to play that night. I went through all that effort and alm that studying only to be like "what did I do that for?" It's complicated.

Cause what you think you might want in life might not be the exact thing for you after all. And focusing on dreams too much only for them to get shattered and never come true is a sad reality for alot of people. And even when your goals do get accomplished your left feeling empty on the inside cause you didnt get the results you wanted. Just going with the flow is what made you satisfied. Feeling free with what you love is what made you satisfied. When you try too hard to succeed thats when you'll face sheer disappointment and dissatisfaction.

I had something similar when I was around 6, but instead of wondering what would happen when you died, I was wondering what the point of living was if we’re just going to die. Anybody else just love the beautiful animation of the Jerrys and Terry? It feels so out the ordinary for Pixar, but they make it work wonderfully! They are also hilarious characters. I like how they don’t make a real villain in the movie. Sure there’s Terry, but they’re just doing their job and don’t have any evil intentions. The creators don’t even make Terry a big deal. They’re more like comic relief that helps the story along a little. I was worried they would make the Jerrys and Terry bad guys, but they really surprised me. The creators didn’t even show them in the previews and trailers! I love how the creators surprised us with the abstract art and one lined drawings that are Jerrys and Terry. Every part of this movie I loved. 22 is a really funny character, Joe has a goal from the begging and they both are surprised themselves by the way they end up in the resolution.

Quick question: do the Jerrys and Terrys use they/them pronouns on an individual level in the movie? Or do each individual Jerry and Terry get refered to as he or she? Cause like I can see why a group of Jerrys and Terrys would be referred to as they since it would be an appropriate use of the plural version of "they". But it would also be cool to have a Jerry or Terry use they/them singular pronouns as individuals.

The design is so cool. You should check out the Inside Pixar series on Disney Plus. They show this one woman who either worked on/suggested the art style of the Jerry and Terry's being like wore sculptures. So her bosses had her design all characters with actual physical wire art she made before animating them. Really cool stuff.

7:22 I'm really glad you brought that up. As a black American that loves animation, it's disheartening to see movies that features a black main character(s) but the majority of the screen time is them transformed into an animal, ghost, object, etc (i.e. Princess Tiana) or they are portrayed as the stereotypical black character that raps, is an athlete, etc etc. When that happens, it feels like the studio doesn't know how to portray black culture/characters and their only knowledge is through stereotypes and mainstream opinions, so they opted for the easy way out instead of learning about the character they want to develop accurately. The writers of Soul did a good job and did their homework, as good writers do. Never be afraid to learn about someone else's point-of-view

I love the movie overall, and I think they did great at giving the movie a black atmosphere and feel, but I have issues with the representation in this movie as far as Joe. His story and voice took a backseat for most of the movie while a white actress took over his body/character, and the movie became more about her story and voice. Even with Joe having a pretty solid arc, it wasn't the focus. He was the side character, and that hurt even more once I also took into account how eager they were to promote this as their first "black-led film"... it was honestly a "black-assisted" film

Favorite character was Terry! I know he doesn't seem to be that likable, but what I loved about him was that he kinda embraces the unlikeable character. Honestly, Terry is just a guy trying to fix a problem. He’s really bold in his goals and could get puffed up sometimes, but it's those traits that make him the character that he is. He also feels a little bit like an antagonist but isn't actually the antagonist, (setting things right is the story goal) I like how he plays off that feel. The ”stick in the mud” and ”by the books” character deep down is really just trying his best to do his job. He plays his character very well and that's why he's my favorite. (’Spoiler’: I also find it funny how the Jerrys tricked Terry to alter his count at the end of the film, that was really funny.)

I feel like they were trying to go for a slightly genderless vibe for the universe constructs. There are multiple Jerrys, some coded male, or female. Terry is voiced by a New Zealander actress and is drawn as having a bun, but most people seem to read Terry as masculine. I don’t believe they ever use gendered pronouns for each other?(I need to rewatch). Jerry sez in the movie that they are the universe made manifest in a form Joe can comprehend. So why would the universe be gendered?

I personally love that Pixar is branching to more mature themes. Many of us entering our 30's have grown up on Pixar movies and still love the stories, but this movie shows that a long with us, the studio itself has become more wise and mature. I can definitely see them producing more successful animated movies that lean more on mature and existential themes. Ofcourse they'll still produce movies that are centered towards children, but this may show them there is an audience for people that love the animated medium that are also looking for more mature plots.

I actually kind of liked how the main character didn’t die in the end. I mean, those 2D things could’ve just done nothing and let him die, but it was cool to see them go out of their way to do what they thought was best for him. It also made it so that the lessons he learned during the movie didn’t go to waste, and he was able to live his life the way he would’ve really wanted to. This also leaves room for a sequel that shows what the main character and 22 do with their lives, and if they ever get to meet each other again. Also, if it weren’t for him continuing to live, they wouldn’t have been able to add in that funny scene where that one 2D being had to tell the other one to look away so that he could throw off his counting. I mean, I guess I’m not saying that this movie would’ve sucked if the main character died in the end, but it would’ve probably been a bit of a missed opportunity.

I think while kids under 10 might not jive with it, in my opinion mid-late teens might find something here. There's a lot of kids out there who don't know what to do after school's over beyond whatever their parents push them to like college or university, and a lot of them may be content to just be as they are and sometimes to their own detriment, because they never found what made them tick, or what made them really live their lives. The movie I feel isn't just about what really matters in our lives, where it's talking about career vs people, and the things that makes our lives worth living, I think it's also about the connection of adulthood and childhood. The relationship of the two main characters really seems that way to me.

They were thinking about having Joe die, but they changed it because the whole film was about Joe learning to appreciate life. “If he died, what was the film about?” Thought Pixar. Another ending you see Joe years after, still having the part-time job as a teacher, and one of his students is 22. Pixar decided on a vague ending, because that’s what life is. They didn’t want a destiny; they didn’t want to tell the future that everything will be perfect from now on. The point of life is to live. It’s about appreciating what we got, spending time with loved ones, playing an instrument, making art, lifting others. All of this whether life is good or bad. Have a life that one day you can look back and say, “I’m proud of what I made of it.”

I'm very religious (baptist Christian) and I don't see anything wrong with this movie. It's more a philosophical take on the meaning of life than a commentary movie saying this is what happens when you die. It actually isn't about what happens when you die it's about living your life while you still can and not wasting it. Of course this is a fictional movie I don't think most people would look at this movie and have an issue with it. The movie isnt meant to be taken literally and start a new religion. I actually think this movie is very good for teens as well. I mean, we all have been in school for basically our whole lives, only to be thrown in the “real world” without knowing what we truly want, so we just continue to do what we already know. I think the movie is comforting in that way. I don’t quite know how to explain it but the movie gives me some peace :)

@@catguy5425 Joe turning into a cat isn't the most creative thing ever on its own, but what is creative is how they use Joe being in the cat. The scene where Joe and 22 escape the hospital is pretty cliché, but after that, Joe gets to see his life from a different angle, which actually adds to the story. What im trying to say is that Joe going into the cat actually adds a lot more than some cheap laughs for children.

There is one line I want to point out that really hits me hard, even though it might have just been said on the off chance. At the end of the movie when 22 is about to jump down the hole to earth to be born, she is scared, so Joe says that he will jump with her. 22 then says that they both know he can't do that, so then Joe says something along the line of "I'll go as far as I can with you." This is where I started crying (heck, I'm crying right now) because it makes me think of all the people in my life, my parents, my teachers, my family, MY MENTORS, who will help me along the way, but they won't be with me my whole life. Like I'm talking about all the parental figures in my life, so it's most likely they will die sooner due to their older age. They will push me and guild me forward, but at some point, they won't be able to go with me anymore. They will work so hard just so I can go farther, be happy, and maybe be a mentor for someone else, but my monitors won't be able to see it till the end. They can only hope that they did all they can for me, and send me off into the future, a future that they will never see. I am weeping here, it's so sad.

This movie actually says something important about what's usually a superficial assumption, that your spark will continue to define you when in reality that's our construct and it really doesn't matter as long as you like what you do The barbershop scene shows that sometimes that spark isn't what the future has in store for us, but it can always be something better, that we don't really know unless we try it and we live life taking the curves it throws at us, because fulfilling what we already created as goals isn't as fulfilling as the simplest of pleasures like the taste of pizza or things like asking someone about their life and discovering more about them

I felt like Joe’s spark at the end was inspiring others, from the very beginning although he was unhappy being a middle school band director , he was able to inspire Connie with her passion of Jazz and when he was explaining to the students about Jazz trying to defend Connie’s into the zone moment you could see they were a bit more invested into it yet when he talked about his personal ‘spark’ moment he lost them and with 22 he was the only one out of hundreds of thousands of famous intelligent individuals from history to be able to reach her and be able to give her her earth badge. It was really inspiring to see how Joe although not fully realizing it, is able to change others around him .

I personally liked the ending. It felt more complete to me. As a musician and hopefully a middle school band teacher myself, I've thought about my purpose in life as a band teacher, and Joe's character just really spoke to me on a personal level because of that (and both our last names are Gardner, which is a pretty cool parallel). He thought that his purpose in life was his spark, to be a musician, but in reality it wasn't. His purpose was to teach. That's what he did with 22 to an extent, and that's what he should be doing. Him dying at the end wouldn't allow him to fulfill his purpose. My mind goes back to that scene with the trombone girl, who came to Joe and said she quit. She tried to give back the trombone and leave it at that, but after playing, she found her spark again, and even though it wasn't Joe talking to her in that scene, that's what a teacher should do, should say. That's what I would say. He changed her life, and inspired her to keep going. That's Joe's purpose. That's what I hope to be my purpose. And if Joe died at the end of the movie, finally finding his purpose of teaching, it wouldn't be complete. He would never go on to teach and inspire all those middle schoolers. He wouldn't fully fulfill his purpose, his life wouldn't be complete. His purpose wouldn't continue. This is one of the few times that I'm glad the main character lived in a story like this, because he went through all that to find his spark, only to die and never apply it to others around him. I'm also thinking about how the kids in his class would feel if he died. I've had a teacher die the year after she taught me and I was heartbroken. She was an amazing teacher with so much potential in her future, but she never got to fulfill it. And as a middle schooler, that was heartbreaking. So thinking back on that trombonist, it would break her heart, and I feel it'd be better if she had Joe in her life. I believe it'd be better if that school had Joe as their teacher. There's still people who need him, and that's why he got a second chance, because now he can start doing his purpose's work. I don't see that second chance as Disney butting in, I see it as a man who finally found himself and was going to put his new spark to use. The ending was intentionally left open, and I see him going back to that music room and teaching, not going to the jazz club and playing with that famous saxophonist. And that's where I believe he needs to be. A music teacher. And I love that. :)

It was even really trippy at times which was great lmao. It had a lot more adult humor that would go over kids heads but also had that classic Disney humor for younger viewers. I looked at this movie with a lot of skepticism but was incredibly surprised by it. Overall it has a really great balance between the two age groups that view it, tackled a very interesting subject and had some great characters in it. If I could give it a rating, ehhhhhhh.... 8/10

i actually felt the opposite about the ending - if joe had just died, i feel like the suicidal themes of that would have been... yikes. up until that point where they gave him a second chance i was SO worried they'd kill him, and with the scenes where he realizes that his "purpose" doesn't fufill him like he thought and essentially just realizing there's nothing left to live for, really (as in, him just accepting the fact he's gonna die at the end instead of continuing to fight to live)... i feel like it could've given many people the wrong impression. i loved the film overall, though! makes me feel utterly hopeless and completely furious with the way the world works (see: capitalism) but that's nothing new! it's probably one of my favorite pixar films, if i'm being honest. yeah, great film.
