Supposedly, this film was funded by a protestant church that had been duped by Ed Wood saying it was going to be a religious film. Bela Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956, shortly after shooting some unrelated footage. Ed Wood added this footage into Plan 9 from Outer Space and decided to include it so he could bill the movie as "Lugosi's Last", using his wife's chiropractor, Thomas R Mason, as a stand-in for Lugosi, even though Mason is taller, thinner, and considerably younger than Lugosi. The appearance of Mason, with cape held in front of his face, may well be the origin of the 'Stereotype' Dracula image which is now associated with Lugosi.

Some pals and I wanted to stage an event late at night - with bands, music and so on - with those scenes projected at half-speed to create a fantastic atmosphere. The power of the images is really something, and looking at the film in a different way, we thought, might bring attention to this, apart from giving everybody in attendance a great evening. We couldn't get it together though, since I was not convinced simply showing a video or dvd would have the same impact. It was do it right or not at all. But! It's not quite the same but play the film at 0.25 using the youtube speed settings, with the soundtrack of your choice, and you can have a reasonable facsimile of the experience in the comfort of your own home.

This is in no way the worst movie ever made. This dubious title was given to the movie by the Medved brothers in their book The Golden Turkey Awards and it's stuck. Everyone will have their own definition of what a bad movie is and Plan 9 From Outer Space is too much fun to be bad. I got to see it back in the late 80s or early 90s when it played on Monster Vision with hosts Penn and Teller. I had only read about it in a couple books on cult movies but was never available. Apart from being completely incompetent I found it very entertaining. The best review I've ever read states that no matter what time of day you watch the movie it feels like three o'clock in the morning. The movie does have the quality of a fever dream.

All the actors look their part, the images are razor crisp, and aside a few dumb or clunky lines, the aircraft control columns and the wobbly flying saucers, I am glad this film got the fame over worse films... There are films you can barely tell what is going on, and Armaggedon with Bruce Willis is definitely more stupid, like doing a long speech before exploding the meteorite, when there is seconds to spare... I would also add some lines in T2 that beat anything Wood wrote by miles, like: "You men only know how to destroy things because you can't carry life inside you", to paraphrase what sounded even worse in the actual film.
@j-555
@j-555 11 месяцев назад
@@wrathofatlantis2316 😂 right. man sometimes James Cameron went too far. one anecdote of mine that kind of parallels what you're saying is when I recently watched a reunion of the 60s batman show that a late night host did in 1988. You could just hear the enthusiasm of the applause coming from the audience, which is noticeably different than any other crowd response to later incarnations. it just made sense all of a sudden that people really like these garage or homemade American sensibilities. Even though it's ridiculous, it's not corporate. I also watched the incredibles recently and was floored by how much I enjoyed it, and it too has a 1950s or 60s kind of appeal. Some of the best filmmakers understand, like brad bird and tim burton. and they came out of the same animation team/class.

I've never seen this particular movie. I tried to watch the Rifftrax version but sometimes a movie is so bad that even they cannot bring much amusement to it. But Orgy of the Dead is unspeakably bad. I don't know how desperate a person would have to be to find this the least bit titillating, especially the amount of flesh is exposed. It becomes unbearably dull. But I ticked it off my Ed Wood filmography. Although I still consider Night of the Ghouls to be his worst.

There's something completely special about how Plan 9 is bad, vs how other movies that are famously bad. There's a common saying that "there are no bad ideas, just bad execution" and that tends to hold up. For example, Birdemic was literally done successfully by Alfred Hitchcock 40+ years earlier. Troll 2: the big idea of a family moving into a town secretly overrun by supernatural creatures that plan to turn them all into trees could be a badass horror movie. Hell, Manos: The Hands of Fate is every backwoods creepy family movie rolled into one, if I gave you a rundown of ten synopses from that genre, stripped of names, you'd never be able to pick it out. If I told you the plot of Robot Monster you'd think it was the most Metal movie ever made. But Plan 9... Plan 9 is the exception. It doesn't just have the charm those other movies possess, of bad FX, bad execution, insane acting choices, and terrible direction, it has an extra power: a BAD IDEA. The premise of Plan 9 is that...aliens?...raise the dead?...to stop?...humans from building...a doomsday weapon that could destroy...THE UNIVERSE?? And it's presented like it needs to convince you, the skeptic, that aliens may in fact be real. Like some kind of proto-found footage movie, but with zero motive for it and no sense for what we need convinced of. Truly, absolutely batshit. Any other bad movie, you give it some rewrites, some careful thought, better execution and another name, you'd never recognize it. But Plan 9? There's no way. I don't care how good you are, you could never truly "fix" Plan 9

It's taken from a stock music library that got used for various TV shows of the time. At least one of the music cues showed up on *The Adventures of Superman* as part of that show's soundtrack.

"My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?" The premise of aliens trying to stop earth people from developing a weapon that would destroy the universe because they know of it's power but are wise enough not to use it, and after trying eight different plans to reason with us and meeting with failure each time due to our stupidity, and them resorting to Plan 9, using our own dead to stop us is one hell of a fun story...
