That’s one thing I couldn’t stand when the show was on tv. I get you have sponsors ect that make the show possible but here on RU-vid we want to see actual wrenching not just talking non stop.
Something I've learned (in regards to the rusty header wrap vs ceramcoat) is that yes the ceramcoat is more expensive initially but if you factor in maintenance on the wrap, eventually it out-costs the ceramic If you have the $ and time for ceramcoat I'd say go for it and save yourself time and money later
It would be nice if Gearz would list the cost of all the items on a build, at retail value, and the cost of the vehicle bought to build. Plus the Labour Hrs. It would put into perspective what the true costs are.
Van 12 grand Wheels and tires 3800 Suspension 2600 Steering 1100 Exhaust 900 Motor 25000 Misc 7 grand Labor building tools welder insurance overhead and a lifetime of obsession 14million. All this does is discourage people from trying. Shit, I should delete this
@@bmstylee oh cool so how much is a gm performance gen 3/4 427 600 horse crate motor with turn key Holley programmable stand alone and all the stuff to make it run and mount, starter, belt drive, motor mounts, flexplate, radiator and fans... Oh and I forgot about the 6l80 so more like 35 grand. My bad. Don't forget the big money driveshaft and ford 9 inch or Dana 60 rear with gears and lsd. Oh you said race motor. Let's ask daddy Dave or one of them street racer race car guys how much then motors cost. Bet they wish it was only 25 grand
We have a 1971 Chevy Van that have owned for 45 year. It is factory hugger orange and a place that went closed it door years ago put windows and interior in it. It has 295/50R15 in the rear and 245/50R15 in the front. It had some problems years ago and has been in the garage not running but it is do for resurrection. This van has been with use so long that it is part of the family . I would love to send you some picture if I had your email.
Hi it's me Gary our old Shop truck was a 80 chassis with a 88 cab with a 84 turbo 400 trans from a Chevy van with a 76 3/4 ton rear end with a 94 bench seat that was A 2002 assembled vehicle
Yep, it all comes back around. Look around at the Cruise-ins, Cars and Coffee and local car shows, Your seeing ALOT more 1973-80's cars, Why? because they have become this generation's "$500 Nova" of our generation, They are cheap "old" cars that still run and and drive that the younger kids can afford to buy and drive while they fix them up. Just in my car club alone there are 6 either being daily driven while working on or being built in a garage and it's all makes and models not just the popular cars, I bought a 73 Buick Regal a few months ago for $1200 and drove it almost 50 miles home, Our Club President is building a 74 or 75 Ford Maverick for his wife, Our Treasurer and her daughter are building a 77 Torino, one guy has a 75 Nova, another guy has a 77 Plymouth Fury and is in the middle of building a 76 Duster.
I went the complete opposite way as far as the suspension. First did the 4.8ls/4l60e swap in my 86 GMC g2500 conversion van. Now I'm converting it to 4x4. Just need to get the transmission/transfer case, Front axle rebuilt if i don't decide to go with a Dana 60, both drive shafts made and then the the floor shifter for it. Then when all said and done i will need to reprogram my computer to except the 4wd trans, I think.
The segment about whether to wrap your headers or get them ceramic coated was pretty informative: While wrapping the headers is a lot cheaper and easier for the do-it-yourself types of mechanics, it's also more maintenance in the long term And despite being more expensive because it requires a professionally trained person to do this, Ceramic Coating seem to be cheaper in the long term as it doesn't require as much maintenance and it lasts longer, and is under warranty
Just a warning to anybody thinking about buying those lower control arms, they ARE NOT a bolt in solution. There has to be some modifications done to make them work. The cross shaft diameter is different. Either the cross member or the shafts on the lower control arms have to be modified.
I really feel bad for the guy with Parkinsons, and I respect the fact that he is not giving up. GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS WIFE. Michael J Fox had Parkinsons as a teenager
I'm sure that if there were shop class like this but got paid for it , I'm sure the kids would be lining up to sign up. Mechanic, welding, plumbing, electrical and AC the schools would be full.
I had G20 vans back in the day and all you had to do was put the ex cop car tires on it P235-70-15 speed rated H or V van was on rails and still rode good
I got dizzy watching this! So many upgrades on the hot rod van. 2 1/2 drop spindles is a great idea and I'm planning on doing it to mine. Exhaust is gonna be tits! So RAD! I'm curious to see it with those big wheels and tires. Rock on
Greetings from Germany, I love your RU-vid videos. My English isn't that good, but I'd like to know what happened to the Heavy Metal Tow Truck. I only see your videos on youtube.
Not quite true that nobody makes a old school style van any more, Chevy and GMC still offer a full size van whose design dates back to 1996. Because of their low price, they were super popular as cargo vans and can be found used with a variety of engines at every price point. I just picked up a 2014 Chevy Express 2500 passenger van with a stock flex fuel 350hp 6.0 LS and HD 6 speed automatic that runs on $3.99 E85 or $5.99 gas. It's better in every way than my old '89 van and much easier than trying swap an LS into the older vans. Since they have been making the same basic van for 27 years there is a huge aftermarket for accessories, and repair/replacement parts are dirt cheap.
I have an 83 Chevy van that will be getting a 5.3/4L65E swap soon. The donor is a 2003 Silverado I got from a friend after it had been stolen twice and the cats cut off. I've just put flex pipe on so I can move it around the yard and have noticed that the ECM doesn't seem to care that the cats are gone. (No CEL). So, this has me thinking that pretty much any aftermarket cat should work. What are your plans for cats on this swap?
Extremely informative. I’ve been slowly restoring, body, paint, interior, engine, on my 74 Chevy G10 (bought my baby new in 74) and have been considering an LS swap. You gave me some great ideas with the new wheels and tire sizes. At some point are you going to get into the wiring and gauges aspect?
One of the really nice things about that old 74, is that you've got no sensitive computer to degrade and introduce hard to trace electrical gremlins to your ride. (Which is not to deny the existence of electrical gremlins in lighting, sound system, or air handling- it's just that THOSE gremlins are comparatively easier to track down, or bypass) You've got a van that will continue to run and drive, even if the battery is run down and the alternator has died. You've got a solid engine that will better withstand overheating, and is better prepared to run on this modern, moonshine infused gasoline. Dropping an LS in an old van is tragic. Stick with a classic, cast iron 350, with mechanical fuel pump, and a 4 barrel carb. Or, shoot, for better ease of maintenance, you can pull lots of power from a 292 straight 6, and still have plenty room to function in that cramped engine compartment. It's a hell of a lot easier to engineer a quick fix with whatever randomness is handy on straight mechanical setups, just to get home in a pinch, than it is to try to engineer a quick fix for a fried computer, or a useless sensor that went bad and won't let the engine run.
@@magnificenthonky Yeah, I thought about it and decided that the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. In its younger days it ran 14’s in the quarter with 2 AFB’s, cam, heads, headers, all the fun engine stuff for its day. I don’t really need the horsepower since I have vehicles that put out almost twice what the Chevy has, but was thinking how fun some of the old days were with that kind of horsepower. Just kicking tires.
i like his episodes , but lately a lot of people are lusting for modern computer controlled engines , what is wrong with a classic engine that is modern day remanufactured to exacting standards with a correctly cfm rated and correctly jetted carb, that is what i would go with , computer controlled engines have way too many wires and sensors to deal with
Gearz has always been filmed around Nashville. I know there are some similar shows filmed in Florida though, so no worries there. Episodes still air on MavTV and Motor Trend. We started uploading them to RU-vid to make it easier for everyone to see them!
I don't know about anyone else. But to see the cars I grew up with being priced out of reach for most. I do not understand where the likes of Craig Jackson stating they have done so much for the car hobby. Unless he's referring to getting rich beyond his wildest dreams. It ticks me off because I hear let's get the kids involved. Yet all I hear from my son and his friends is how cars are beyond their reach. Beyond sad.
Dude! I'm with you on that! To take it a step further. I am a RU-vid junkie, and many of the popular content creators are building collections of Ferrari's Lambo's, Bugatti's and McLaren's. I'm not throwing shade on the DDE's or Stradman's of the world. I'm a Gearhead, first and foremost. My deal is, they are buying these cars like we buy food.and God help those who are about to get a dose of reality when they realize they'll be lucky to afford a Focus or Camry❓
@@theanomalous1401 Amen to that Gregorious. My son works for a Chevy dealership and all the techs say they cannot afford the cars coming out. That's bad.
It really is. There's no such thing as a cheap car or cheap project anymore. I feel for the gearheads coming of driving age and wanting to get something decent for cheap to wrench on, drive and have fun with.
@@edwardh1003 Agree Edward. I cannot tell a poor kid to get into the modeling hobby that I have been doing since I was 11. Today models either cars planes trucks or boats are priced beyond a little kids reach. I bought them for a buck and some change when I started. It infuriates me.
yeah, it's tough to like the super high horsepower per dollar LS based stuff brings to the table compared to all the old school knuckle dragging engines of the boomer era
Has this guy ever finished a project? Posted 5 months ago, 50k views, it's safe to say this is the channel's most popular series so why not keep it moving? Is it because they've run out of products to plug? Or have they realized that the crap they're plugging isn't an easy bolt-on in a van? Whole show is an ad, with ad breaks, and more ads at the end. There is literally zero useful information for the DIY mechanic.
Boo Hiss. That LS swap ruins the build. I'd rather rebuild the stock 6 that's in it. Computers are foolish things to install into automobiles. Those sensitive electronics will degrade over time, and the process will be hurried along by temperature changes. An undetected leak may introduce water to the brain box and fry it out. There's an awful lot of time and finance being dropped into turning a solid vehicle into a problematic piece of junk. What a waste of a perfectly serviceable van. May as well make it completely useless, and chop the roof, shorten it by 10 feet, and outfit it with those hideous oversized wheels and rubber band tires that completely defeat the purpose of pneumatic tires to begin with.
Should be called Stacy's aftermarket shill show buy expensive overpriced summit catalog junk Stacy's catalog LMC ect... builds like to see him do it on the cheap with swap meet junkyard and ingenuity instead of big cash probably have 50 k in it !
