Challenger pilot seemed a little defensive. Didn't much seem to like being offered advice, being told he was low, being told to watch his bank angle. But I'm thinking exactly the same things to myself as I'm watching the vid. Like, "woa... you're not flying a C152" as he lets the wing drop. "red over red, pilot is dead" as we see the VASI.

it actually looked worse then it was IMHO, the plane was being rocked by gusts and/or turbulence; the pilot rode it out with good speed and lined it up, once down close to the runway it looked like the gusts were minimal and s/he was able to land uneventfully.

Hard to say for sure but I'd guess it was really close. Must have had some super hot brakes by the time they stopped at the end of the runway.
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 24 дня назад
@@casperthegm741 I saw the thrust reversers deploy. If they used full reverse thrust, they wouldn't have needed to ask for much performance out of the brakes, even if the aircraft was at MTOW. Additionally, the thrust reversers are not factored into the runway length and V1 speed calculations done by the FMS computer in the aircraft. This is because the thrust reversers can either fail to work, be forgotten, or even deploy asymmetrically if the wrong kind of failure happens. So the aircraft will calculate a V1 speed that allows it to stop by the end of the runway even if there is no use of the thrust reversers. The way that type certificates are issued for airliners ensures that any airliner will be rated for an RTO at V1 even if the aircraft is loaded to MTOW, without use of the thrust reversers. This is something that they actually have to pass a test for before the aircraft type is granted a type certificate and/or allowed to fly paying passengers. It only has to be rated for a SINGLE stop in this configuration, but it does have to come to a full stop on the runway and sit there for like half an hour (might be a bit less) dealing with the hot brakes, and it's not allowed to have any issues that cause damage to the aircraft beyond what happened during the process of coming to a stop. There's a somewhat infamous video of an A340 undergoing this test where the tires catch fire from the hot brakes, IMO this counts as a failed test and they would have needed to adjust or re-design some things and try again in order to pass that certification test. If the aircraft does this test and the tires deflate, that is NOT a failure condition. This is because the tires on airliners have something called "Fuse Plugs" which are purpose-designed to melt at a certain temperature, and because these plugs are one of the things that hold the air in the tires, when they melt, the tires are rapidly (but safely) deflated. This prevents the tires from bursting and potentially damaging the aircraft. If the tires BURST, that is likely a failure condition, but if the fuse plugs function correctly, the fact that the aircraft might be unable to move after this hot-brakes RTO due to a number of deflated tires is not something that will count towards a failing grade.

Honest question, how do pilots know their tire burst?
@leofrgt
@leofrgt 24 дня назад
Vibrations on the rudder pedals and noise from scattered rubber hitting the airframe mainly. A yaw tendency would be felt aswell. It can be tricky and possibly mistaken for an engine malfunction in such fast moving scenario! Hope I gave an idea :)
@KingInTheSoutha
@KingInTheSoutha 24 дня назад
@@leofrgt thanks for this, because I have honestly seen drivers who don't notice a blown tire for a long time. So something as big as a plane I would imagine it would be harder to tell, but I think the vibrations on the rudder makes sense because planes are very noisy and bumpy at takeoff, I doubt they would hear the explosion or notice the debris hitting the plane.
@bigjobbies
@bigjobbies 24 дня назад
they have tire pressure monitors actually
@leofrgt
@leofrgt 24 дня назад
@KingInTheSoutha indeed, it would depend on the dimension of the plane and the way the tire breaks down. In full flight simulators I had the chance to practice it would feel very similar to an engine surge at first! Maybe you might find interesting that after a certain speed is actually reccomended to continue the takeoff then reject it :)

The first clip is a good example of how proper training pays off. The pilot(s) could easily have panicked in the 2 seconds (?) available and continued with the takeoff, not solving the problem, just compounding it. The 'V¹, V², TOGA or abort' decision needs to be almost instinctive to be effective, and in this instance it was. A less well-drilled crew might have got fully airborne, potentially doing more harm to their plane, having to land (fully-laden) on an undercarriage with an unknown amount of damage, and leaving the runway in a messy/dangerous state. Now imagine applying the typical car driver's reaction to such a situation. Without the same level of training, rather than stopping immediately they'd have pressed on, thinking, "I can save this... No sweat... It's only a burst tyre... Keep going...", hoping there'd be time to make a better decision later on. There's never a good time to make a better decision. It's the first one you make that matters, and this plane's pilot(s) got things exactly right.

The end result was safe, so I won’t criticize the pilots. But most well trained pilots take off above 80 knots with a blown tire. It’s much safer. You get to land and use the full length of the runway, as well as having a much lighter aircraft. They probably didn’t know it was a blown tire and they thought they had an engine failure at first.

Agreed. The approach was awful! The instructor did his best to offer guidance, but the student was arrogant, and, not particularly good.
