PlanetX Bootzipper Adventure MTB after 2500 miles and 18 months

This bike was purchased by me at full cost and I am in no way affiliated with PlanetX but I will say I do like their brand!
I've been riding the Bootzipper for some time now and have clocked up around 2,500 miles mostly on bikepacking and camping trips.
The bike has been flawless throughout with just the usual punctures.
The Bootzipper is a heavy robust bike that will take a beating and carry a heavy load.
Not designed for speed but to get you to the end of the road and then beyond, the 32 tooth front chain ring and massive 50T rear sprocket means you'll climb most hills even with a heavy load. Certainly a bike to consider is your carrying heavy bushcraft kit of taking on an epic ride where speed is not a priority.

fat bloke here, i also have a bootzipper. I absolutely love it. I brought mine during in covid and have put thousands of miles on it.

I think that you definitely distributed enough information and insight to give anyone a pretty good idea of what that bike has to offer and what it is capable of. Cheers Terry, this style of bike is perfect for carrying bushcraft kit into the woods or taking on an extended bikepacking trip again where you may need more kit and you'll know it will be able to tackle anything regarding rough or smooth terrain, but for a lot of the riding I do it is overbuilt and a little heavy. So a new bike has been added to the stable for the nice summer trips when I can travel light and fast:)

Thank you for the thorough review. I have just ordered one of these with the intention of adding a motor to it. It's not a straight forward ebike build because of the 12-speed chain, but I *think* it'll work out ok! 🤞 I will probably end up losing some of the climbing ability if the battery dies, because I'm having to swap the 32T chainring for a 40T to squeeze the motor in the space, but the motor should be able to more than compensate, and it'll be a little bit quicker in the fastest gears with a larger sprocket up front.

Great review of the bike Sandy it really does look like a sturdy piece of kit for the adventurer. At least the weather is starting to get better and we can get out on our bikes and enjoy this lovely countryside what's all around us.

I've made the same bottom bracket mistake 😂 After replacing mine I realised it was a squeak in the peddle!! We live and learn. Bootzipper looks like a proper work horse. Fab video as usual. Thank you!!

Great to see another Bootzipper! Mine is bare metal coated with clear lacquer - I use nail varnish on any scratches and I found it hides them really well. It's a solid, simple reliable bike that doesn't need constant fettling though if you live in a hilly area you will be changing brake pads often. If I was more savvy when I ordered it I would have avoided a couple of niggles: the cheap plastic rear derailleur broke so I fitted an alloy one. The brakes weren't up to stopping me downhill so I bought a bigger front rotor and put the old front one on the back. Love it.

Mine has hardly needed any adjustment over the last 18 months, just a tweak on the gear shifter adjusters and thats it. A very good bike

A good solid tractor of a bike for lugging equipment. I’m looking forward to seeing your new gravel bike in the next video. They look like they are good value the Planet X bikes. I’ve got an old kinesis tripster ATR which was an early sort of gravel bike before gravel bikes became really popular. I use it as my commuter bike with road tires on for a bit of speed.

Love the ruggedness of the bootzipper. Whilst ive got the lightweight Ribble CGRal, its not coming with me in September to Normandy. Im currently refurbing my old 90's Marin hybrid so everything is simple to repair in France.

Your planet X bike has some really low gears to allow you to climb a lot of steep hills at a walking pace impressive. I'm very intrigued by your new bike and it's gearing, sounds like a great touring/backpacking machine which can only mean there is going to be a video of you on tour with some overnighters, well I'm hoping , so look forward to that Sandy, thanks for sharing this excellent informative video take care 👏👌👋

Yes, you can count on there being a lot more Bikepacking and Wild camping videos on this channel as the years go by. I used to do a lot of hiking and backpacking but now get pain in my right hip when walking long distances, thankfully cycling being low impact means I don't have any hip trouble and can cycle pain free. Also the speed of a bicycle is just right, not too slow and not too fast!

Hello Sandy! Great looking bike! I’ve got another good steel bike, a Surly Karate Monkey. It’s set up with a rack and bags for packing but does well on trails too. That Eagle drivetrain definitely makes the climbing easier. I have had all the fancy suspension bikes and carbon fiber road bikes in the past, but nowadays it’s about durability and enjoying the day, no more racing through the ride for me! Cheers!

I ride a giant 26 inch wheel mtb for short trips shopping and to the gym . It does a good job and moves fast . Built to last .I don't need a expensive bike for what I do but if I did I'd look at one like yours

There's still a lot of 26 inch bikes around, I have an old diamond back 26 and it does roll a bit quicker than the 29er I feel but the Bootzipper is a real workhorse and stronger built by comparison

I have a Cube Acid, 3x10 speed MTB, goes like crazy on flat ground. Also had 3 Carrera bikes from Halfords, good bikes too.

A lot of it has to do with arm and leg length, although I am 5ft 10 I do have long legs and arms, if your 6ft the Large will probably be OK, best to contact them before ordering if you do decide to get one

I've actually been on Planet X's website this week having a mooch ... the bootzipper is fantastic value ... I might have one myself in a couple of months ... I already have lightweight cross country bikes both hardtail and full suss ... but like you say it's a tank I need now to haul all my new heavy kit

It is a tank, I have really heavily loaded this bike at times. When the tyres are pumped up really hard it will move quicker but the ride is unforgiving, running them around 20psi seems about right for me and returns an average speed of 9.5mph which is still 3 or 4 times faster than walking so you still make good progress. On the new bike my averages are up by 3mph which is quite significant over a 10 hour riding day and really helps when trying to keep up with friends on quicker bikes. Overall the Bootzipper will do better on rougher terrain, when carrying lots more kit and when you have a lot of hills to climb.

Great review, thank you! I'm looking at getting one of these for off road bikepacking. Do you use any kind of frame protection tape under the frame bag straps or does the paint hold up well before it starts to rub off?

I've not used any frame protection on this bike and there are a few rub marks now but the paint job is quite good. The Bootzipper is a strong bike

The new bike has a combination pedal fitted, I can use cleats or flats and when combined with a proper MTB shoe where the cleat is flush you have the best of both worlds

G'day from Oz. I mentioned before that I am also riding a Bootzipper. I am considering converting to tubeless due to some fierce prickles which tend to grow where I ride. Question is have you made this conversion and was it an easy process? Glenn

Hi Glenn, No I am still running tubes but from what I hear it is worth doing. I may go tubeless when I change the tyres. Sofar I've had only 2 punctures in 18 months

I'll show the new bike in my next video, really pleased with it, it will make a great bike for lightweight bikepacking trips but won't compete with the Bootzipper when it comes to really rough stuff and heavy loads, but then the Bootzipper would never be able to roll as quick as the new bike, so they should compliment each other well:)

It is impossible to have too many bikes! However there is a problem with group rides. You end up going at the fastest rider's speed. Is it really all about speed and big distances? Not for me. I love savoring the ride. I do luv your videos!

Yes this is true, I don't tend to ride in big groups, the most I have ridden with is just two others both friends who had slightly faster rolling bikes. It is nice to slow down and savour the ride. The new bike just allows me to keep up with them whilst putting in the same or a little less effort:)

I went from 40psi to 50psi and the rolling resistance was much easier.

Max pressure recommended for this bike is 40psi, yes will roll faster but a very jarring ride

I prefer the simplicity of the 1 by system, its just so simple and gives me the range of gears I need and less to go wrong

is the cut out saddle doing its job of stopping any numbness around the undercarriage sandy ? 🤣

Yes absolutely, it stops numbness and is a comfortable saddle. You will still need to "acclimatise" to the saddle if your intending long hours in the saddle but you won't get any numbness or prostate issues. I also learned that with conventional saddles they should be set either level or slightly nose down and your sit bones should rest on the back part of the saddle, this will also remove pressure from the sensitive region and reduce numbness

He’s got several e bikes I believe. I think Sandy likes to ride normal bikes as well to keep up his fitness.

Nothing wrong with Ebikes Marty, as Neil says I do use them but with the battery and motor I find them very heavy and you only get 40 reliable miles of range. Overall I prefer conventional bicycles because they are light, can be lifted over fences and gates and once you've built up your leg strength cycling big miles is very possible and no need to chaarge any battery:)

That bike is too heavy sandy I'd recommend getting a lighter one for comfort, maybe even an e bike.

It's horses for courses.If you want to carry a lot of gear and go along rough tracks you need a bike built strong like this. I have Ebikes but for me prefer the normal pedal power
