You sound like my conscience "I realize they're a dollar but you don't need them" 😂 I also have that drawer full of sticky notes/page flags lol

Personally, I don't really use sticky notes or page flags for my planner, but they are so soo useful if you're a student to flag pages and write notes in your textbook without actually writing / highlighting so you can re-sell your books!

I glue four sticky notes together (two on each side, back to back), hole punch them and use it as a running to do list or diy journal card. Cute, effective and you're using your supplies :)

There are numerous things that people can live without and I agree that no one needs a million pens, tassels, target page flags, and one time use planner stickers, but I think it gets some people motivated to actually use a planner consistently and have fun with the planner community. I think it's a personal preference on what to buy for a planner, but I'm a very visual person who uses a planner that's filled with cute Etsy stickers, page flags, and hanging planner charms. I agree that none of these items are essentials, but just fun options to add to a planner :)

Wet behind the ears newbie hear. I loved the vid & I also agree with your comments, Vanessa Ponce Dugan. I love that I have a place to suss out bits & pieces of the planner communities thoughts...pro & con.. What are these 'hanging charms' please. I can't imagine them in a little ole flat planner. Thank you :)

I am not purchasing weekly and/or monthly planner sets because they are very expensive. Stickers and washi tape from the dollar store, Michael's, Tuesday Morning on sale. Clear stamp set from Reflections come with block, ink pad, the majority of icons needed for a planner and it's on sale. great video

I never use decorative post its, highlighters and big stickers. It's fun to decorate, but if you want to PLAN, planner and pen are enough. Decorative stickers or tapes can look pretty good if you're a highly creative person, and kudos for you if you are. But, I did find very useful for me some stamps, the ones to fill with appointments, or those with icons. I prefer stamps because they're reusable and minimalistic.
@ultravioletpisces3666
@ultravioletpisces3666 5 лет назад
I like the idea of stamps too, because they are reusable and repetitive (in a good way) so when your brain sees it, it knows immediately what that means and doesn't have to think about it. It's the definition of the word "iconic." It's a recognizable nonverbal icon that communicates more quickly than words. That said, I don't have any. Lol (yet?)

I saw somebody with an expensive planner (I guess it was "affordable" to them, but to me, anything more than $12 is probably too much) which had like a template shape I guess, and they completing covered every single inch with stickers. It's like.. Why not just use a bullet journal notebook then? (And not a 40 dollar bullet journal, but a big $6 journal from the grocery store. Actually I can usually find journals and planners for $1, $2. If I was planning on covering it with stickers, I'd just buy the cheapest one on clearance I could find,!

to actually simply and purely plan and stay on top of things, all you need is some sort of calendar and a writing implement. That's how it was 30 years ago when I bought my first organizer (what we called planners back then) and that was about it....post-its were things I used at the office only...didn;t use them in the planner...
@KatinkaHesselink
@KatinkaHesselink 8 лет назад
Washi tape is NOT necessary either. In fact, you can do a very short post on what you DO need. It's a very short list: you need either a planner (if you're full analog) or a notebook. You need a pen. I love Google planner. I also use a ruler every once in a while - not necessary, but nice. That's it.
@kich6172
@kich6172 7 лет назад
I agree Katinka. Then if you want to embellish without the recurring cost and bulk of stickers, use a small stencil and a few...let me say that again...a few...colored pens or pencils. Favorite cutouts from magazines or junk mail with a little glue still look nice as well.

I just started putting my to-do list on a full sheet sticky because I can migrate the whole page instead of having to rewrite everything (until I want to)- but if I had a ring planner, I would just use a blank notebook page. As long as I can move things and not have to start everything from scratch. I'm not that girly and perfectionist that I can't look at a paper with some scribbles on it.

I love the Erin Condren life planner BUT you do NOT need an Erin Condren life planner. I've seen plenty of planner beauty's using less expensive options like sugar paper from target. You also don't need every planner imaginable.. I wanted to get all the different planners? Why? NO REASON SO DON'T DO IT lol

Great video! Thank you for sharing this perspective! I just got into planning, and the first thing I did was to consider what I really needed. Instead of buying a new planner (partly because I hate all the layouts), I ran around my house collecting all the things I already had -- a 3-ring binder, lined paper, graph paper, dividers, dividers with pockets, pencil case, pens, pencils, highlighters, page flags, sticky notes, and stickers! I bet most people already have these things in their home, even if they haven't yet gotten into planning. ALL the accessories are cute, but avoiding that hype and the clutter and using what I already have feels better than buying *all the things* (and spending *all the money*) :)

I don't understand how people use such a large amount of stickers and accessories that they put in planners. To me it just makes your planner cluttered and lessens your space to write down actual events and tasks
@lauriegiannola5222
@lauriegiannola5222 7 лет назад
I agree! I got sucked into the hype early on and have a lot of unused stickers, but I only use the stickers to cover up days without dates in my monthly view haha I can't imagine being one of those people who cover up days they actually have to go out and do things
@ultravioletpisces3666
@ultravioletpisces3666 5 лет назад
I don't understand most of the "planning" in the planner community. If I'm using a date book, I keep my schedule in it by writing down appointments when I make them, not creating elaborate layouts and monthly preplans every week... Also, if you get an organizer to organize your life, but then you have to organize your *planning supplies* that defeats the purpose to me as the idea is to make your life less difficult/complicated, not more.
@loris9464
@loris9464 4 года назад
@@ultravioletpisces3666 For some of us we need more elaborate planners as our lives are far more busy than an appointment here and there. I personally use one that is a number of different types of planners in one. It tracks many aspects of my life that due to my insane schedule would end up being an issue if not planned out ahead of time. I'm sure many like to add lots of pretty stickers to make a simple life look far more interesting then it truly is.

I started planning in a Kate spade about 6 months ago and started in an Erin condren about a month ago, and I realize that while my cute planner clips are great when my planner's in my backpack, I have to take them off when I put it in my purse. I'm perfectly happy with my Erin condren bookmark!
@butterflygirl141

Everything you mentioned plus an expensive planner like the ECLP. I use an inexpensive planner ($4.99 from T.J. Maxx) that allows me to write in appointments, meetings, etc. THAT is the point of planning...not stickers, and other useless "pretties."

At most, I use post-it flags as bookmarks (one for monthly and one for weekly), and use three different color pens (blue, black, red). I use post-its to supplement the planner, just for more writing room, if a particular day's block is full, or I'm writing down steps for a project.

"tassels, they don't serve any purpose" - I literally laughed out loud. This video was so great, entertaining, and informative. I wish I'd watched before I started planning. I'm sorry, but I would have to say NO to those friction pens I thought "yes!" this is the best erasable pen I ever used, until I realized how they work. I had used it for a couple weeks and unintentionally left by bullet journal in my car and the heat that was built up in the car during those summer days cause everything I wrote in my journal to erase, all on its own. Simply having heat come in contact with the ink will make it erase, friction is not the only way it removes the ink.
@gladiatorinsweats

Ashley Kraemer I'm glad I learn about this before splurging on them, I live in Las Vegas and my planner would be useless with a thermo-sensitive pen!
@kraemerashley88
@kraemerashley88 7 лет назад
It was definitely a lesson learned. might be useful for art work when drawing sketches, once you have your ideal sketch create the outline of it with regular ink and just use a hair dryer to remove the friction ink. my even be useful for those I need to doodle because I'm bored days. plus its mildly satisfying when the item you are erasing has no importance.

+1 for in the fridge. I use frixion cause then I can erase things (like my shifts when they change) and have never had an issue with things coming off, despite hot Australian summers... I’ve also seen someone use removable Avery circle stickers and that way if an appt or whatever changes she can just pop the sticker on another day. (Plus you can colour them in to be prettier).

Finally, thank you for telling people that they don’t NEED all that stuff. I recently purchased a binder for $1.00 from Dollar Tree, went online and printed out FREE calendar sheets, each month, day at a glance and week at a glance sheets. Then I purchased 2 sheets of, what I’ll call, multi- purpose stickers...appointments, put out trash, school events...you get the picture, just basic stuff. I also purchased, at Dollar Tree, a 2 pack of plastic envelopes that snap closed. They have the 3 holes to fit in your binder. I use one to hold my stickers and one for receipts that I need to keep. Other than that, I do need a pencil pouch to hold pens, like you said, 2 or 3 good ones. I like a ball point pen, a Sharpie and a highlighter. Bottom line, you don’t need to break the bank to plan and organize. For those who do couponing, they have cute little pouches at...you guessed it Dollar Tree. I really hope this lets, a lot of people, off the hook, when it comes to budgeting and planning. Oh, you can also get an awesome budgeting guide, for FREE, from your local Home Extension office. Did you notice how many times I have said FREE or $1.00? Stop the insanity! 👍🏻😊🙋🏼‍♀️

I only use Post it notes because they have the best adhesive - like the idea of sharing the special ones though - may do that during holidays - definitely no huge paperclips or tassels here - but I do have "seasonal clips" (only got after a year of planning) which actually serve a purpose marking pages and add some colour & give heads up to which season it is cause I'm a functional not "pretty" planner - 1 pencil & 1 sharpie - that's it - in an earlier video you suggested getting samplers from etsy shops - think I'll look into that - its taken a year to figure out what kind of planner works for me (layout, size etc) and now I'm figuring out what I need (then want) to have on the page - thnx for sharing that's how we all learn in this crazy thing we call planning 😊🤗

So glad I have not fallen into the page flag/sticky note trap! we write down little things on them and throw them away! Sure they are great because they are adorable, but I use them for planning the week out and then they go in the bin after I write them down in my planner! I actually still have sticky notes and page flags from when I was in high school (I graduated in 2009) that I never used up in college and I'm now using them for planning. My dad always came home with note pads and sticky note sets from when he did his taxes, so I have BOOKS of sticky papers!

I love my sticky notes but then I use them not just for planning. I use them for leaving my family a note or myself a note or tagging pages in a book or catalog. They are great to use for many things and I am always looking for one in my house. I don't buy them all the time but I use them all the time. Same with the page flags. I love pens.. all kinds. I like to use different colors in my planning. Think the tassels are really cute but I haven't bought any myself. I did buy a pompom ball to hang from my planner but took it off since I keep my planner open most the time. It just got in my way so I hung it on something in my room. The planner paperclips are cute and I have made them myself but I don't like using the giant ones like you were showing. They are just too big. As far as planner covers I haven't bought any. I have wanted to make my own but I don't have a laminateor so I haven't yet. These are great tips for someone who is just starting out into planning. I was planning before it even became popular like it is now. I remember when I was younger just drawing in mine to decorate it. There wasn't any kind if stickers back then like there are now.

It’s now 2018. I got into planning 2016. Started with a Walmart planner for $7. With it I used black pen for the first 3 months. Slowly I then started using 4 new colors. That was that year. Theeeeen 2017 ... Instagram and RU-vid happened. I neeeeded stickers, washi tape and all the things. Come end of 2017 I received an iPad for Christmas. Digital planning saves so much ,obey and I now create my own planners with hyperlinks and all. GoodNotes and keynotes is all I need.

Agree 100%. Also paper clips with ribbons & bows to get caught on things & bend my pages! Unfortunately, I too have these things in an envelope in my stash in case a REAL use for them turns up.

Great video and I completely agree, especially regarding the dollar spot at Target....ugh the sticky notes and flags are horrible. The cuteness gets you but when it comes to function it just does not work so I have decided over 2 months ago that I would not buy from the dollar spot again.

I 100% agree. Especially the target flags and note pads.

As I do not live in USA I can not buy many of the things shown in the videos. But I thought I would if I could buy everything. And my answer is seasonal kits, because of my personality and the fact that I am a student of magister, and I use many post-it notes, and it would be great to change when it's Christmas, autumn, Easter, spring, etc. I suffice 1 notepad and 1 set of sticky note per season.

You guys should actually just feel privileged that you can get stickers for a dollar - don’t take it the wrong way, I do not mean it as an insult... Okay so maybe I’m envious..? Required there. LOL. Target in Australia does not sell things like this (unless someone would like to correct me) As I am extremely ill and do all of my shopping online.. If anyone knows where you can get cheap stickers - feel free to let me know. But no, I would not go crazy just buy a few. I’ve learnt from videos like this, plus the fact that I just don’t have the room... have a happy and healthy planning day:)

The sticky notes can be cut out and stick them on the monthly goals list for some decoration. :D Thank you so much for this video!

Target sticky notes aren't sticky enough for me! I always have to use adhesive roller with them and it makes them completely impractical except for decoration.

It bugs me when planner video ppl say “color coordinate” when they mean “color code.” Color coordinating is like when you want your sofa color to match your drapes. Or your planner cover to match your handbag.

Man I Wished!!!! I saw this video before I got sucked into the hype. I avoid the Target dollar spot and the Michaels $1.50 bins. Thanks for doing this video ;)

I actually use sticky notes a flags ALL THE TIME haha . I find it way easier to mark pages or make easily removed notes. I go through a whole stack in a month with all the different things I use them for. as for the jumbo clips, I use miniature binder clips, they are still super cute and hold your page really well. I color coordinate my pages because I have to have everything easily available with work and the chaos of life haha. something I found that is inconvenient for me, too many stickers, that Is when I get overwhelmed and dont feel like planning. too many stickers takes too much of the page for me. I do use a few cute ones here and there, just not too many. I love love loved this video, it's so awesome seeing different opinions on the same hobbies!

I noticed you didn't mention Washi tape. I have watched a lot of videos about setting up planners and most of them show 50 to 100 rolls of Washi Tape. I have 5 rolls. I am not too creative but I bought the washi tape because so many said I need them. My journal is a 3 ring binder and decided to put the washi tape down the edge over the holes in my notebook paper to make them last longer. Thank you for your video.

I looooove the sticky notes for tasks. I use my planner like a diary so my 'to do' stuff goes on sticky notes. You can move a task over to another date if you don't complete it (I use the little ones I never used page flags tho)

useful vid :) I have 2 boxes of sticky notes which I'm trying to use up in junk journals...and don't start me on page markers - using them up on future planner pages when I get appointments or things...xo

Did you have to un-coil an ec planner to use it for your covers or did you buy an extra one somewhere?

I use sticky notes 🗒 lots of them, I use highlighters, and I have a bunch of colored pens 🖊 because I use different colors in my planning and my essays!

This is a great video! Although, I will say I color code a lot in place of buying tons of stickers so I do have a pencil pouch full of different kinds of colored pens. So for me I guess it is pens instead of tons of stickers. I like to find some functional stickers (to do lists, icons, pay days, those kinds of stickers) in monthly colors of the ECLP and use those. So i'll use a shopping cart icon in place of writing grocery shop but that's about it. The whole "no white space" as I've heard it being called to decorate is $$$$ and time consuming. I have a full time job and no time to spend on that much decorating. :)

When I got into planners I also bought big paper clips, page flags and post it notes. I also wasted money on Etsy buying stickers that were way over priced.
