Spring is here and nature is exploding. We have a lot of projects going on not only the boat build and we talk about an upcoming one.
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on RU-vid. While we are still sailing our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

You folks are fascinating to watch. My dad is a retired marine carpenter. He is 93 and used to build boats from scratch way back when. I love to tune in and see how you guys are progressing. You are a craftsman.

Just loving this you guys. I am a master carpenter who built custom decks for 30 years, retired and started making barrel saunas. I totally understand the repetitive nature of ripping, planing, etc. You kind of go into a trance mentally at times and time goes really fast. I also loved the gratification with turning raw lumber into a work of art.

You should look into getting some Live Oak from the United States for the keel section. It is strong durable and yet flexible. The USS Constitution was made of it and they named her Iron Sides and she still sails today!

I don't know a thing about which wood is best for what application, but Leo at Sampson Boat Co. does. His rebuild of Tally Ho is getting him face to face with a wide variety of wood. He might have a few suggestions. Also, there's a wooden-boat building school in the Port Townsend area. Someone there might have an idea or two. And, too, there are several shipwrights in that same area who are constantly building, fixing, and rehabbing wooden boats, from dinghies to schooners and brigantines. I genuinely love your channel!

suggestion, raise your chips extractor so you can fit theses plastic bag underneath. you may need to figure out how to attach the bag, but at least you won’t have to empty the smaller bag that often. also you could approach a farmers close to you who has chicken, sheep that could buy the chips, extra revenue for your project.

Looking good! I love your videos the music is perfect. One small detail I learned while building strip plank composite hulls is to watch the grain orientation. Try not to have more than a couple of strips with flat grain next to each other. I have seen cracks in the core form after the laminate has dried in the quarter sawn planks that are next to several flat sawn planks. I think it was caused by the greater expansion and shrinking of the flat sawn planks. Even so small cracks in the wood are not really a problem. Most of the strength comes from the laminate anyway. Moisture content is really important until you get the first coat of epoxy and glass on both sides. Most critical will be after the outside is laminated but before you get to the inside. Big changes in humidity can cause lots of problems keeping the hull fair. Don’t use a hard wood. If you need more strength add laminate. Hard woods do not like epoxy and remember you are using the wood as a core. Most of the load on the core is shear and fir or cedar is almost as strong in shear as oak.

We launched our 52 f ketch in 2005. It is ferro with strip planked cabins and gunnels. They are covered with fiberglass. Gunnels are of tasmanian oak and are the biggest pain to maintain as the timber rots inside the glass in weeks after any opening in glass. Today we discovered cracked glass in our cabin an subsequent rot on the oak. However, we have red cedar beam connected to to the rotten oak. Cedar was totally unaffected. I would not change from cedar that, to our experience, is far superior.

"... when the boat will be ready in a couple of years ..." With Johan's work-ethics and Malin's support and helping hands it won't take that long I reckon. That hardwood-keel-area idea did come to mind already with the first mentioning of a probable lack of cedar. I'm not sure I would want to have oak down there though, I'd recommend Robinia Pseudoacacia (Locust) for these keel-neighboring planks: it's way easier to bend while denser (lower wet-weight but higher dry-wight than oak), and torsion wont let it splinter as much as oak, plus You have only about 15 to 20 % of the sapwood You will find (and will mandatorily have to get rid of) in oak. Robinia Pseudoacacia is a cheaper version of an absolutely durable, rot-resistant wood, not a tropical one but a nasty invasive neophyte in Europe (while planted for economic use, of course) and should be readily available. Durability 1-2 (Teak and Bongossi-equivalent even with soil-contact). Long lengths in sufficiently kiln-dried quality might be challenging to find, but it is possible and I'd say worth it to look out for some. In my experience it would even be worth piecing together shorter lengths given the quality keel-planking You can get with Locust. Well workable with epoxy (just do not let it lay around too long after milling before epoxying) Ash was another alternative, cheap because European ash dies of a neophyte Chinese fungus ruining their roots for some years now, so, many are felled and marketed as long as the wood is well usable lowering the price where there still are usable ash-lots from fresh fellings on sale. Way better to bend and way less prone to torsion-splintering than oak, too, as well as denser and thus also heavier in "dry" than oak.A lot of sapwood though, plus ash ain't nearly as rot-resistant (Durability only 5 following DIN-EN 350). Thanks for sharing!

That smell drifting across the fields is referred to as manure silage. Reminds you that you're in the country side, as I grew up. On another note; spring is a fantastic time to put down some 'organic' seedlings. I like unconventional tomatoes that you can't buy in your local supermarket but its important to buy unmolested seedlings that are GM free. ironbark timber is commonly used for keel timbers, planking, wharves, jettys etc in Australia it's incredibly hard and strong, it would be ideal to close the bottom of the hull and mount the keel on (assuming it cooperates with the cedar) . but it's probably hard to find oe expensive in sweden

On the wood you choose for the keel area, keep in mind the movement two different wood species. I know you have the Gougeon Brothers book, they have all the data in Appendix A. Alaska Yellow or Port Orford cedar may be good. Mahogany could also be excellent since it is stable and absorbs the Epoxy well. White oak moves a lot with moisture changes, and does not absorb the epoxy well and may not bond in that key area.

It will be very cool to see Ran III visit the island where her cedar came from. BC is a gorgeous cruising ground. Relative to the use of a different heavier wood, that sounds like a good idea in principle. There might be implications of mixing species for traditional wooden boats but with the epoxy fiberglass cladding I'm betting that it won't matter. Having extra strength in the lower part of the hull could not hurt.

Being the grandson of a farmer who'd known many who'd experienced hay barn spontaneous fires, they knew the dangers and thought they were taking adequate measures. That night the bags caught fire and burned into the clapboards...then became fully engaged throughout the exterior walls of the house. While waking in the middle of the night, they noticed the drywall on a closet wall was orange and were able to get everyone out of the house safely. Total loss. Good steady progress with the planking, looking forward to seeing the hull shape emerge. I would recommend making the hardstanding for the boat as long as possible, you may need a small tractor to pull the boat out. When complete, 10 tons + trailer needs a well constructed surface, make sure you have good depth of crushed stone over a wide area. I guess she will need to be transferred from a constuction cradle onto a full road trailer. A large digger with an experienced operator can acheive a lot in a few hours, so don't forget to make sure your access road is suitable, from all angles. Who knows perhaps you will be able to bring her home for maintenance in the future!

A comment on the sandwich material. I am not an expert by any means but have done a bit of research for an airplane build.
