This week we are back to PLANNING and I'm going to talk you through my kitchen research (so that you don't need to do your own!). After spending a lot of time creating moodboards for the kitchen and understanding what we could do with they layout, I finally think I have a vision of what it's going to look like. I also talk you through the kitchen company we've gone with (DIY Kitchens), show you their samples and talk you through our kitchen design on their kitchen planner. This video is a lengthy one but I hope it helps you with any of your own kitchen designs!

Totally agree - Nick Morris' videos are so helpful! We went through the DIY Kitchen process, created our design, made a list of all the materials & units and were ready to check out... But then a designer at our local Howdens actually managed to price-match it! Can't believe it! The Howdens price would have been far more had we not 1st done all the work on the DIY Kitchens planner tool.

You could consider an induction hob as they can be inset into a quartz worktop and are therefore flush. So the hob, when not in use, effectively becomes more worktop.

That is such a good idea - I'm definitely a gas girl over induction but maybe this is a sacrifice I will have to make due to how small the room is!!

I've put in a secondhand shaker kitchen and painted it mid apple green, which I love. I have the cooker and sink on the same side. I think my kitchen is longer, but narrower, so the other side most of the units are not quite as deep, but put in a breakfast bar that also holds the bins. Then it's fridge/freezer and then huge larder, where I also keep George Foreman, toaster, slow cooker etc. Not sure about having the microwave in the larder. I've put a narrow self under the units to hold various jars of stuff and excess bottle of wine. Also have a wine rack in a spare spot. I like the quartz with the goldy bits in it. Be careful with textured tiles i regards to cleaning - I had some previously and they were hell to scrub; love my metro tiles where everything just slides off. I also have a herb drawer, but I can't get all my herbs in it - I use loads and have large jars of them. I'll cope, but I do think they could have had 3 shelves in it instead of the 2. I think the bottom one was meant for oils etc. Looking forward to seeing yours come together.

I went for a DIY kitchen in cashmere. I really like it! I have a pretty small kitchen as well (1.86cm wide), but I did go for upper cabinets down one wall. The extractor fan was in one of these upper cabinets, so I feel that this sense of uniformity stops it from feeling so closed in. I also have one large window, which keeps it airy. Good luck!

Hey Autumn, great video as always. So my wife and I are pretty much in the same situation as you guys albeit a few months behind. We're also planning to go with DIY kitchens. Some initials thoughts on your kitchen design - personally I would move your hob to the left a bit, maybe go for a 400 unit as your first unit - this way it'll give you a much bigger prep surface to the right of the hob rather than the prep surface being split into two. I would personally ditch the wine rack - and instead I'd suggest trying to get a wider pull out unit installed as it can be super handy for storing pots and pans. Just my thoughts..
@FeedbyAutumn
@FeedbyAutumn 2 года назад
Thanks for the thoughts - really great shout on trying to get a bigger area for kitchen prep as I ALWAYS use so much space. I think we were going to choose a wine rack as we couldn’t get another storage unit to fit but I will have another look. Thanks again and hope your renovation is going well ☺️

I’d go with Dakar and the second quartz. Have you got a space for bin and recycling in the cupboards? I hate a separate bin as it seems to always be in the way. Drawers are such a good option for storage! They are the most practical like you said. Love the design! :)
@FeedbyAutumn
@FeedbyAutumn 2 года назад
The bins are going in the cupboard riiiight next to the kitchen (I will talk through it all in the next kitchen videos) - it's a tiny inconvenience having to open a cupboard but I think will be far better than losing storage in the kitchen units (or a freestanding bin, as you mentioned!)
@nichleih

The kitchen is the most exciting part of a renovation! We went for Calacutta Gold in our kitchen and would still recommend it. Love the combination of it with the Cashmere here. What kind of lighting will you have in the kitchen? That’s something we didn’t quite master when renovating our house so will be adding light strips under the floating shelves, but definitely would have been easier to just add more down-lights/spots when we did our ceiling. I was also a bit concerned about not having enough counter space for appliances, but taking them out of the cupboard when needed has worked out pretty well for us so far. Just ensure you have enough plug points for ease of use. Look forward to seeing the finished product!
@FeedbyAutumn
@FeedbyAutumn 2 года назад
Ahhhhh I am so excited to see it come to life! Good to hear you love the Calacutta Gold - it's got such nice detail which I think would look absolutely amazing. We will be having a few spotlights in the ceiling and then strips underneath all units/shelves - hoping this should be fine. And glad the appliances are working out for you too! I'm thinking it's just something we will need to get used to (and considering we've been living out of plastic boxes for a couple of months I think we should be no problem!)

One thing on the open shelves, love them but given you have a small kitchen do you not want to maximise the space as much as possible and use closed shelves/cupboards above the counters instead? Also another suggestion is the microwave could be like one of those floating ones over the counter tops, as part of the upper cabinets?

I love the idea of green cabinets, although I know you have ruled them out. Green can still be a neutral colour and I think the shade of green you showed would work beautifully with your aesthetic. I would be a bit wary of black hardware as I think that will date, although it is not hard to update that if you need to. I was a bit concerned when you mentioned a preference for open shelving - kitchens are steamy, greasy places, so you need to be prepared to clean often and you have fewer places to hide away clutter. I was pleased to see overhead cabinets on one side in your design, which would be my suggestion. I think you are very sensible to spend a little more to get the kitchen that fits with your lifestyle. I did the same with mine and have never regretted it. I would just suggest you upgrade the cabinet next to the pantry to be drawers too. I have drawers everywhere apart from under the sink. They are the most efficient storage solution. It's also great to see you must have another option for the washing machine (did I miss what?). In Australia we all have separate laundries (or it's a cupboard laundry or in a bathroom). The thought of food prep and laundry in the same space horrifies me. Looking forward to seeing the kitchen completed. I bet you are too!
@FeedbyAutumn
@FeedbyAutumn 2 года назад
You're so right about green - I definitely think they could stand the test of time but just couldn't find a colour that matched what I was looking for within our budget. I have a sneaky feeling I will end up painting them green eventually but am ignoring this for now 😂 You're so right about drawers as well, they make everything soooo much easier in somewhere as busy as a kitchen. The washing machine will be moving into the big bathroom on the first floor (we're building a laundry cupboard inside to allow for more storage in the kitchen)

So, not sure if this just a thing in America, but have you considered not having an exposed stove exhaust and instead installing a microwave above with a built in exhaust? Usually the exhaust hose would be hidden by an additional small cabinet above the microwave. This way you don’t lose counter space, you get back a shelf in your pantry, and gain a tiny bit of additional storage by way of the added cabinet.

If you want to add a bit of colour to your kitchen, you could try painting a splashback in gloss paint. I did it a few years ago when we put in a new kitchen as a temporary measure as we couldn't quite afford the hand made tiles I really wanted and needed to save up. We painted splashback in F&B Calke Green and I wouldn't think of changing it now. I love the colour, its so cheery and the gloss is really easy to keep clean too. It turned out much better than the tiles, which were similar to ones we had in a previous house and were much higher maintenance on the cleaning front. Removing the kitchen grease that collects over the grout line on wobbly tiles is not a nice job.
