Great video! I have been looking for a planter myself and had the same results. This year I used coulters on a broken seed drill to lay out my rows then dispersed the seeds with an earthway seeder.
First year on my own land planting a sunflower field. Tilled it up yesterday gonna fertilize, spread, and cultipack tomorrow. Planter wasn’t in my cards either, and I just finished making my own cultipacker out of scrap today 😅. Watched your videos a hundred times to get ready, wish me luck!
We planted our sunflower this weekend. We purchased a 2 row planter 4 years ago and man has it been great. It was 1000 bucks then and the same guy is selling them now for 1500. They are cleaned up and painted. We just swap plates and go. Good luck this season bud.
Here in Alabama I tried to get my seed in the ground by the end of April, but a few cold snaps really delayed them sprouting. They are looking pretty good now, however the density of flowers is much less than last year. I think I lost quite a few seeds from not being covered well (broadcasting as well). Sprayed post emergents today with the nitro surf. Anxious to see how they do. I used a gun sprayer as well to minimize how many passes I’d have to make through my field and damage flowers, but uncertain how evenly I spread the herby. Fingers crossed I didn’t burn ‘em up too bad. Doused a few areas pretty heavily. One section of my field is eat up with pigweed, hope the imox at least slows it down!

Me and my Brother planted ours this weekend, we ended up with a little more wet soil than u guys but just had to roll the dice (Only weekend we’re both home for awhile). Planted 3 acres and followed your plan for pre emergent. Hoping for a good turn out
I’m puzzled a bit this year with the non coated seed and seeding rate. In the past they’ve been coated. I’m glad they aren’t now bc I think that’s a scam anyways haha but I am using a 4 row planter which obviously means I’m using less seed than broadcasting but I’m only putting our 2-2.5lbs an acre. The bag says 5-8lbs an acre. I’m also using smaller #4’s which gives you more seed per bag but 2-2.5 an acre worries me! The previous years the seeds were coated which should add weight (usually 1/3 heavier when coated) but the bag rates are the same this year like they didn’t adjust it. I was worried I wasn’t getting much seed in the ground but after seeing them sprouting my spacing looks perfect. I think we are getting more bang for our buck with the non coated seed. Interested to see how your spacing works out compared to years past since you are broadcasting.
Interesting! Didnt think of it that way. I am going to do a little more research into it all. I have always gone twice the seeding rate when broadcasting and have had good success (when the deer dont eat me out..)
Do you have a video that tells roughly what dates we should be doing everything? Our opener is September 1st but i have no idea when to burn down the field, when to plant, etc. Thanks in advance.
Man, it scattered all throughout the update videos from 2023. I encourage you to go through the 2023 Dove Farming playlist, its all in there! In short, plant your 90 day crops (Corn Sunflowers Milo) first week of May and plant your 60 day crops (most millets) mid June. I have slid these dates around some, but that is what I am doing this year. Follow along, glad you're here!

Think the blue coating? Per seedworld - seed has been treated with thiamethoxam insecticide and mefenoxam, fludioxonil, and azoxystrobin fungicides. 1:56
Looks good im splitting my 2 acres of sunflowers this year plant one next week and then waitin two weeks and planting other acre. Last years drought browned us down 3 weeks early and the shoot suffered drastically. How big of a draw do yall feel brown top really is.
Thats a great idea! Next year we will probably go back to two fields of sunflowers but not until I can protect it all with fencing. Just to expensive for the deer to eat.. RE: Browntop, we were very pleased with it but I cant say it was any different than the other millets. There was a pile of birds in the millet field after we burned it. Millet is just a lot easier and lower maintenance crop. Three fields planted in millet and burned would probably do just fine
It’s a allis chalmers 2 row. It takes jd71 plates. Corn and bean plates are singles but when running sunflower you need the spacer as well. So it’s the sunflower plate and a spacer plate to help with seeding.
I kick myself for selling my two row planter. Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes. Your broadcasting last year worked just fine. I don't see why it wont produce the same this year.
