This video shows how I plant strawberry bare roots into fabric grow bags. I have been growing strawberries in containers and grow bags for the past couple of years because I no longer have enough room to plan them in raised beds. The strawberries do very well in the grow bags and there is less risk of them being overwatered since grow bags dry out more quickly than most other containers or in ground beds. It is also nice to be able to easy move them if needed. Planting strawberry bare roots into raised beds (or other types of containers) is a very similar process, except I would use less fertilizer if I was planting the berries in the ground.
Here are links to some of the grow bags and fertilizers I have successfully used for strawberries. I am not sponsored by any of these brands, and there are certainly many other products that would work just as well, but these are just the ones I have personally used.
Grow Bags:
2 Gallon Grow Bags (20 Pack): amzn.to/3g9gQxl
3 Gallon Grow Bags (20 Pack): amzn.to/3S3WtPj
2 Gallon Grow Bags (12 Pack): amzn.to/3EJ4Ix3
3 Gallon Grow Bags (12 Pack):amzn.to/3rVtkuT
Fertilizers. Note that I have used all of these with my berry plants and sometimes mix them together, but I mainly use the Espoma Berry-tone for the Strawberries. I often will add a small amount of the Down to Earth Acid mix along with the other fertilizers, because strawberries like slightly acidic soil, but I don't usually use it as the primary fertilizer (mainly because it is expensive and not as well balanced as the others):
Espoma Berry-tone Organic Fertilizer (4-3-4): amzn.to/3jlD8dA
Sustane Organic Fertilizer (4-6-4) 20 lb Bag: amzn.to/3lztPHJ or
Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer (4-4-4): amzn.to/3EdxeV2
Down to Earth All Natural Acid Mix Fertilizer 4-3-6, 5 lb:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
Note About The Maxicrop Fertilizer: I only use this for soaking the roots before planting, or as a supplemental feeding later. It is not a complete fertilizer. Also, I have now switched to using the powdered version which is a better value:
Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Liquid). amzn.to/37uA0JJ
Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Powder): amzn.to/3uWO9ak

I was told there was no need to use fertilizer like that Berry-Tone until later when they're flowing. My potting soil is new and has 50% compost. I've never grown anything in this soil and was told there should be plenty of nutrients for them for quite some time. I will be getting some MaxiCrop with Seaweed, I've used that before on my Aquaponics system plants. Grow beds and grow bags are new territory for me. I'm nervous that I'm gonna kill everything LOL!

They look good sitting on the mulch. I have some in bags doing really well. 1 gallon bags aren't producing nearly as well as the 2 or 3 gallon bags.

I did grow bags last year. The 1 gallon 2 gallon and 3 gallon. All 3 sizes produced very well but the 2 gallons are what i will use for next year. I mulched with pine straw. Planted Oct 15 and still getting berries late june. They are slow now due to high night temps so its time to collect runners for the next planting. The crown not being covered is the key. My buddy added compost when i was fishing and covered some crowns. I would like to find some Brilliance or Radiance. Im still growing Festival.

That’s great! I’m still getting a few berries off of my plants too. I tried Festival this year too and it is one of my favorites. If you try Brilliance or Radiance, let us know how they taste, especially compared with Festival. Those are both varieties I haven’t tried. Thanks for sharing your update! 😊

Thank you! I got the Sweet Charlie and Sequoia bare roots from Willis Orchard Company. I liked Sweet Charlie a little better than Sequoia but both are good www.willisorchards.com/category/strawberry-plants

how do you keep the squirrels away? i’m in st pete area and container garden mostly (condo), but can’t keep the squirrels away from the small amount i try to grow. springtime they were sitting in my strawberry containers munching away at my strawberries. and their digging things up in pots 😖😩 lately dug up and stole a young avocado seedling. i’ve tried so many things with no luck. really enjoy all your videos.

Ugh, how annoying. I don't usually have problems with squirrels, but something (probably raccoons) did used to steal my strawberries until I made cages for my strawberries. I'm planning to do a video soon, showing my cages made of hardware cloth. In general, I think squirrels leave my plants alone because my Mom has a bird feeder and the squirrels take food from that. I think they prefer the bird seed to my vegetables and they are well fed. Every once in a while, they will dig in my pots and bury acorns, but it doesn't happen too often. Maybe because I have cats around in the yard. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!

I'm in zone 8b, I got some seascape bare root strawberries. I planted 3 plants in 5 gallon grow bags. Do you think that is to many plants for 5 gallons or should I be ok?
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening Год назад
Hi. That’s a little tight but I think they will be ok. You may just need to feed and water them more often since they’re sharing the nutrients and water. I doubled up some of mine this season (2 in 3 gallon bags) because some of the bare roots I ordered looked pretty rough when they arrived and I didn’t want to waste more bags if they weren’t going to make it. Some of those did survive and have 2 growing in the same 3 gallon bag and they seem to be doing ok. Good luck!

Last year I planted strawberries and even though I didn’t know what I was doing, I got a lot of berries / at first. I was waiting for them to ripen, when one morning, I found every strawberry gone, except for one half eaten one on the ground with teeth marks in it. The next crop of berries disappeared as well, even though the fruit was still green. We have an abundance of wild rabbits in my neighborhood. I’m guessing they had a feast. I wouldn’t even mind sharing with them, but the rascals left me none. How do you protect your crop?

I had issues like that too so I made cages to protect my crop. I finally got around to making a video of my cages. Click here to see how I built them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JAq2q8aE3mI.html

Can you tell me what brand of peat potting soil did you use in the grow bags?
@floridavegetablegardening
@floridavegetablegardening Год назад
In the video I was using potting mix I made myself, but I have used store bought brands before too. I recently ran out of my mix and right now I’m using Vigoro brand potting mix and Kellogg brand potting mix from Home Depot until I have time to make more potting mix (it’s a major pain to make it but it is less expensive and I like it better than most of the premade mixes). This is how I make the mix and what I use if you’re interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f3-bITp3ESI.html

@@floridavegetablegardening I planted sweet Charlie 2 days ago in 10a. I planted them directly into bags of compost. I think I’ll poke some more drainage holes to be safe.
