I have been in the hobby more than 50 years and had all kinds of fish. Now I only keep platies as they are easy, beautiful, active, well behaved, engaging, prolific, easy to breed, no special foods, friendly, inexpensive, and come in many colors and patterns. It is the perfect fish.

I recently rescued platy fish from an abandoned house. firstly, I am new to fish keeping and thought she was a juvenile goldfish, but after a wonderful person on reddit advised she was either a molly or a platy it changed everything. I've had for about a month (her name is Katy) and she is doing great! Your videos really helped me give her all that she needed to have another chance a life and I thank you for that! The place I found her in had left her with a cigarette bud in her tank. Not sure how long she was left like that and it definitely broke my heart. Not only do I have the cutest and bravest fish, I am now addicted to fish keeping! I am looking at getting her some tank mates since she is out of quarantine and I have set up a tank for the new fish - so they can be quarantined. I have a 20gallon that originally had platys. But they died so I went towards nano schooling fish (harlequin rasboras and cardinals) and 2 dwarf groumis. The tank ended up getting heaps of algae build up, despite having a bristle nose catfish. So I've restarted, bought new substrate. Took the old gravel and half the water out, cleaned and added new substrate and plants. Now it's a waiting game to add fish which are going to be platys. Despite the crazy breeding, my daughter loves them and they're not just easy to look after but their bright colours make the tank look so cool as well 👌

I’m getting a 55 gallon tank on the 1st and I have platy and minnows together. I keep the tank at 70-72. They do great.

I think the most most important part of the process is the cycling part. You should talk about that more. Tank, filter, gravel. My fished died cause I didn’t cycle. I had no idea.

They can be very friendly to those they know. I can put my face right up to the glass and they aren't phased in rhe least.

To cycle my tank I let it run with a ammonia bio filter for about a week added some Cory catfish for a few days and then added my platys and they’re doing good 👍🏽

My 5 platty have a huge 75 gallon with huge canister filter very spoiled. And fully planted and a huge pirate ship in middle. :) no 10 gallon for me no cheap set up for my spoiled fish. My Beta is in a 50 gallon lol. Only the best.

Can platies and/or sword tails withstand soft water and tank temps at around 82 degrees? I’m looking for dithers for loaches other than barbs. I have an 120 gallon. I don’t have live plants. I have a basic LED light and my tap water has I ppm of phosphate so I get lots of diatoms. Any advice for all of this? Thanks!
