@@ZebraLuvI particularly like his "Radioactive but it's Barbershop Harmony" video (it's kinda old, but it's on Spotify too) and his "Radioactive + Take Five" short.
Too true. In your opinion, what P&F song would make a good sea shanty? I personally think that “A Brand New Reality” from the movie Across The 2nd Dimension would work
I'm 42. never saw the show until my son was born (I was 30 then). He fell in love with the show and the music at a young age. We still sing the songs now that he's 12. It's a G-D classic!
@@Feimicha don’t need to ask. I was a music major in college. My music history teacher would grab the choral students & drag us all down to an abandoned sewer pipe & have them sing the chants so the acoustics would be perfect & we could experience them better than the CDs we had.
Yeah, I was like "this is pretty but really not a shanty." Like, other genres make extensive use of call and response but have less rigid structure since the structure isn't built around specific tasks like shanties are. Like, could be a hymn, or a drinking song, or any number of other folk genres. And then you have people who seem to think that any and all folk music is a sea shanty, or worse, specifically "The Wellerman" (which is itself not actually a shanty, lol). Like, I've sung "The Old Dunn Cow", which is a drinking song, has zero nautical themes, and the melody sounds nothing like "The Wellerman" and had people go "I love 'The Wellerman'!" and I'm like, "clearly not enough to actually recognize it because this is a totally different song." Like, I don't generally mind people using "sea shanty" to refer to the entire maritime folk genre, I do it myself sometimes, but I feel when making comments on musical structure it's important to know what the actual structure being referenced by a term IS. I've found the VAST majority of the time people say something "sounds kinda like a shanty" it's people who have no idea what the term "sea shanty" even means in the first place, which, again, is fine when referring to a maritime folk song, like "Old Maui" or "The Wellerman", but when referring to modern filk songs (that's not a typo, google it if you don't know) or whatever that have nothing to do with the sea, or when someone WRITES a filk song and calls it a shanty when it clearly does not fit the definition, that's where I take issue.
@@jacobbissey9311 I thought the def of shanty was a maritime folk song that uses a "call and response" format where a solo singer sings the verses and a larger body sings the chorus? is that not what the Wellerman is? or is that definition not correct?
I like the subtle detail that the "records" glued to his fingers are paper documents as they are the only thing that would be refered to as a record in this time period.
It's nice to have this one in my head for a change. I work at a wildlife clinic and sometimes when I hear "squirrels" my brain involuntarily responds "Squirrels!? Squirrels!?" and then SIMP is stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Happened just this morning actually, haha
jimlapbap is definitely underrated, I hope he's doing better on tiktok than he is on RU-vid because short-form musical content that isn't just whatever is big on the charts is hard to really get noticed on here
Kudos to the man doing shanties, he’s his own choir! Plus, he did a good job with something that wouldn’t have *quite* fit the archetypical shanty. Also, the choice of having papers on his hands instead of records, lol, such a nice choice.
“Oh I get it! Platypus is a metaphor for whatever’s keeping you down! My parents are a platypus! The governments a platypus! My teachers are a platypus!”
The fact that he steps to the beat is a small detail but an awesome one too. I doubt he got it in just one take, which makes me really admire his dedication
I know a reboot is in development, but it’s honestly so refreshing to see a show’s creator still engaging with it after all these years. It helps that the media in question is very iconic, but still.
See? You take the rhythm and clever lyrics of rap, then you add _changing the pitch of your voice_ and it's way better. It's like something Doofenshmirtz would invent accidentally, like the B.O.A.T.
@@uneek35 i mean, it doesn't HAVE to be a sea shanty I'm just saying try singing notes. A lot of rap is halfway there, especially back in the old days when it was still half funk.
I noticed that your walking pace matched the shanty before it had turned into it! As early as "you should do "Platypus Controlling Me" as a shanty," your pace was exactly what came next! In fact, the tempo was almost exactly (I think) 80% of the original: when I speed it up to 125% here, it almost perfectly matches!
