I will say hugs at around eight minutes. You mentioned that we should be forced to fight in a fighting game…. Can we please get some recognition towards the fact that in a fighting game none of the heavies have the sort of respect in Smash that they do in any other fighting game. There is no feeling of fear when trading shots with a heavy in smash bros, can you make a video on this topic?

If someone is camping while down just let them lose, thats exactly what the timer exists for
@panikk2

i think that's probably why at the big house it was only enforced against the loser. it's essentially speeding up what the timer would do should that losing player want to continue with stalemating and stalling. enforcing the DQ just makes the tourney much better to watch. they have to consider the viewers.

@eragon78
@eragon78 Год назад
@@panikk2 Yea, except.....dont do that. People approach when winning all the time. Thats on them for being bad. Camping while down should 100% be allowed, and its a legitimate strategy because your opponents often get impatient. There are tons of other strategies with camping while down too. It runs down the clock. If you arent down by very much, but your opponent is willing to burn 4 minutes not approaching cuz theyre up, then that makes it easier to time them out if you can just get the lead back when the clock is low. That could lead to an easier win than trying to get it back earlier and then trying to outlive the clock for an extra 4 minutes. Or it can be a mental game. People get impatient and nervous when they have to camp for a long time. If you're down and still camping, it can be pretty stressful for the other person and make them more likely to slip up by throwing off their pacing. When you do finally get aggressive, that can catch them off guard cuz they always have to be ready for it, but never know when you're actually going to pull the trigger. These are all valid strategies, and things ive seen people do as well as personally have done. I dont see why any of this stuff should be DQ worthy. Plus, it doesnt even make tournaments "take forever". I hate that excuse peopel come up with because its complete bullshit. This kinda stuff happens EXTREMELY rarely, its not like half of sets are doing this. Its like one set maybe once every 5 tournaments. Ive TOd myself for a very long time, and the number of time outs ive had in my events in over 5 years of TOing is less than 20. Thats in literally hundreds of events. It just doesnt happen that often. A few extra minutes once every 5-10 tournaments for a SINGLE set is not that big a deal. It just does not happen often. In fact, sets take way longer for a million other reasons than people actively stalling in game. Someone going to the bathroom mid set is going to make a set run longer than someone going for timeouts. This simply just isnt really an issue when it comes to time. Maayyyyyyyybe if you're an offline local who already has a tight schedule to be out of a venue you can MAYBE make an argument. But even then its only really an issue if its actually one of the critical sets holding up bracket. If its in winners or something it doesnt even matter. And again, people do this kinda thing so rarely that it doesnt even matter.
@ckorp666
@ckorp666 Год назад
@@eragon78 the reason ppl dont do it is bc its not allowed, lmao what happens if they lift the rule and every match devolves into a staring contest where both players put down their controllers for several minutes a set. are u gonna write essays about the incredible strategic depth and nuance of a boring game that nobody wants to play anymore? i feel like you've forgotten about a core concept here Fun: [ fuhn ] noun: something that provides mirth or amusement: "A picnic would be fun." enjoyment or playfulness: "She's full of fun." verb (used with or without object): Informal. joke; kid. adjective: Informal. of or relating to fun, especially to social fun: "a fun thing to do"; "really a fun person"; "the funnest game". Informal. whimsical; flamboyant: "The fashions this year are definitely on the fun side."

@@eragon78 You're definitely passion-replying to what you've seen through the comment thread as opposed to the one above. You use quotes around "take forever" when it wasn't quoted verbatim by the original comment. Unless the replied comment was deleted, the above comment is not mentioning tourney length but viewer engagement. Across all sports, not just esports, there are rules that stop players and teams from stalling and ensuring entertainment to the audience. Examples being but not limited to: shot clocks in basketball, icing in hockey, play clocks in football, serving time limits in tennis. The difference there is that it applies to BOTH sides. I do believe stalling rules should be enforced to both the winning and losing players because it would stay true to ensuring viewing entertainment. You may argue that it is an effective strategy and I would agree, but refusal to play is still refusal to play. It is exploiting a rule or lack thereof to force your opponent to become impatient or increasing your lead by running down the clock. If you are playing online or as part of a ladder with no viewership. Use whatever tools are at you disposal. But at the end of the day, this is an esports tournament. It is a sport. The term sport is defined by an activity where an individual or team competes against another FOR ENTERTAINMENT. tl;dr: Stalling is effective. Use in your ladder matches online. This is an esports tournament for viewer entertainment and it should abide by rules that punish players and teams from intentionally running out a clock and promoting lack of action.

Agreed with HugS on this one that the TO was within his rights to call a DQ for stalling. ICs were in the lead and it wasn’t on them to approach. A lot of ppl mistakenly think that stalling is only defined as some unbeatable or near-unbeatable strategy like wobbling to 999% or infinite Meta Knight dimensional cape. Things like that are banned specifically in addition to the general stalling rule. This TO was just one of the few to act on that rule, and he did so legitimately for sure.
@f_bog
@f_bog Год назад
i'm 100% in favor of the DQ. 1. TO enforced their own rules at their own tourney, big whoop. 2. discouraging unwatchable gameplay is a massive W. 3. hard stopping to 'gameplan' midgame is a garbage excuse for lack of preparation
@eragon78
@eragon78 Год назад
Except that wasnt listed anywhere in the rules, and the person had no way of knowing that was not allowed. The TO just pulled the rule out of their ass midset to DQ the person, then ban them for complaining about it. At least if the TO had the rule around BEFORE it happened, then thats at least fair. Or if AFTER that game, they told them to not do that again or theyll be DQd, thats also fair. But they made it up on the spot midgame. Its like if I was tired of seeing Sonix time someone out mid set in grand finals and decided to just DQ him mid game because I didnt like watching it as a TO. Thats fucking stupid. He was playing the game by the rules and I just decided on the spur of the moment to DQ him because I didnt like what I was seeing. Thats just a TO going on a power trip instead of actually creating a fun and competitive environment. Do NOT make up and enforce rules mid game.

@@Ebani No. Catering to the viewer experience is what all of the tournaments are trying to do to increase engagement. Do you think engagement is a bad thing? If you wanted the rules to be more specific on the stalling part, say that but "under the discretion of TOs" means they reserve the right (as they should) to DQ players how they see fit. Should the TO have waited longer? Maybe like 10 seconds longer (even though it's already 40 seconds). Do TOs want to encourage the stalling playstyle? No. Why would they? It should be allowed but there's a limit. Idk where you get the "don't care about participants" claim from. @eragon78
@eragon78 Год назад
So what? Its not that big a deal. Its only like 3 more minutes to just let the clock run down. 99.99999% of people dont do salty timeouts like that because they're going to get shit on later. If the Zelda really sat there and let himself lose after doing nothing for 3 minutes, then everyone would just laugh at them for being salty and nobody would actually care anymore. There isnt a reason to actually DQ them. It ruins the competitive integrity of the game. And thats also assuming you even COULD tell for sure that the zelda was just trying to waste people's time. I know people who camp while down as a legitimate strategy. Sure, maybe in this instance that was going on, but its still a judgement call. But it can also be a legitimate strategy sometimes, especially if you arent down by that much. No major for example would EVER DQ someone for something like this. You just let the clock run down and call it a day. There is no real reason to try to save time here by DQing them. It just looks tacky. Its only 3-4 minutes tops you're saving, and it stirs up a bunch of unnecessary drama. Its not like people going for time outs when theyre losing is a major problem that needs to be addressed, it basically never happens. Its not something that needs to be "fixed". Just let the person time out and lose, then laugh at them afterwards for being salty. Its as simple as that. No need to actually DQ them.

@@King.Ivory813 Ive watched tons of tournaments, including pros timing people out in basically every smash game. I dont have to be entertained every second of a match in order to stomach watching it no. If someone is going for a timeout with 3-4 minutes left on the clock, I dont have an issue watching still no. Its not that big a deal. I like watching people play optimally. If that requires going for time outs, so be it. I like the stressful situations of people doing literally everything they can to win, and watching how people overcome that. I dont really like it when two people just mash forward because they cant for the life of them stand to wait even a second of not just holding in. Id rather watch two people timing each other out, than a match of two scrubs only holding forward with not a single thought in their heads becuase theyre so impatient that they never wait at all. The vast majority of people who play this game have zero patience. Hell, when I play people half the time I just wait for them to swing at me wildly and then punish them because they dont even understand the concept of patience and feeling out the opponent.

As a longtime Melee TO I've thought about this a lot and I believe it should work similar to boxing rules where you need to show willingness to engage on the stage. There is a subjective element to this which may affect how a matchup is played so the decision should be made by a seasoned player as a referee overseeing the match. There should be a warning for a first infraction in the set and a DQ for the second infraction. Both players are responsible so if neither player chooses to engage both will be DQ'd (to cover the case similar to Michael vs Bananas). The difficulty with this method is that EVERY match would need a trusted and seasoned player as a referee which would be difficult for large tournaments. This video is a great example of a justifiable DQ.

It seems wrong to say that tournament rules were created to reward specific things. Stuff like items not being allowed and certain stages not being allowed aren’t rules because the community doesn’t want to encourage the skills of item usage and stage camping; they’re rules to make the game more fair for everyone, to even the playing field and have the best player come out on top. Also, why is the timer even there if taking some time to compose yourself or run away to try and force an approach is “stalling” and a forfeitable offense? Let people play how they want within the rules, not everyone has to be slamming their faces into each other the whole time for games to be interesting and entertaining.

Yes, the camper would've lost anyway if they let the match continue like that, but why should the leader have to sit through 5 more minutes of that? Like Hugo said, rules serve to discourage certain behaviors and to encourage others, and by dqing the camper, both goals are achieved. Better player in this match is encouraged to keep playing well and camper is discouraged from staying still for 40 seconds.

The reason peach bomber stall, rising pound, and planking are considered stalling is because there is no way for the other player to even attempt to hit you. If the timer were to run the Zelda would lose or be forced to approach when the timer gets low, that’s why we have a timer. Calling a match mid game because a Zelda didn’t move for a minute is just petty and stupid.

You don’t even know what the terms you’re using means, you’re just saying stuff to sound smart, planking is when somebody is just grabbing the ledge over and over again? Regardless of the character, even with a non invincible ledge stall, where they are 100% approachable. Yoshi can plank on the ledge with eggs and is at a disadvantage for doing so. I think the TO is in the right, the Zelda was clearly stalling, if the players sat still for 5 minutes and then the Zelda was dqd would it have been better? You’re forgetting that at the end of the day that esports are spectators sports, If the viewers have nothing to watch or be entertained with, they don’t watch, and events can’t run because there’s no income, and then we wouldn’t have tournaments because because you think that in a fighting game it’s okay to not fight and just sit down for 8 minutes with your thumb up your ass waiting for the clock to run out

I think y’all aren’t thinking about this yourselves and are letting emotions and influence dictate your opinions. Imo this was a bad move on the TO. You can see how his emotions drove his decision more than the rules. Dude has a problem within the first frame of zelda’s teeter animation. Both players were perfectly hitable. The zelda could do the exact same “stalling” next time, but stand a little closer and put more acting into it to hide his intentions. I mean are we just going to enact a “if your % is lower you must approach like a dumbass” rule? Why even have a timer at all if the tournament can’t run properly when matches actually go to time? Imo if this is an actually viable stalling tactic that must be banned, then ultimate truly is one lame as hell video game.

Using Hbox and his comment section, or a twitter reply section, as an authority on what should be acceptable is really strange. Also limiting the definition of stalling to positioning yourself to be unhittable is really weird as well and seems to be diverging from why we use the term stalling in the first place, which is that you are taking an action to waste time or halt the progress of the game. Also, If the Zelda was closer to the ICs obviously, they would be doing more than if they run to the opposite side of the stage, if you can't understand that than you know nothing about Smash, if not existing as a conscious being who likes personal space and isn't comfortable being crowded. And, although I don't play Ultimate, forcing a game loss on a player that plans to waste 4 minutes on stream of a free to enter bracket, run and commentated by the streamer, seems like such a non-indictment on the video game and the community.

Most in Hbox's channel simply agree with Hbox. Me personally, I think the TO was unjust in his actions because he pulled the plug with no warning. I guarantee if he had a system in place where he could say "PLAYER X, YOU ARE IN DANGER OF STALLING! THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!" That the Zelda would have stopped that shit. I also personally think this is some baby mode ass shit if you really can't deal with this kind of stalling. I mean it's just a player standing on the other edge of the stage. Is Zelda like... super deadly for icies just standing there? I've seen way worse. Sheiks infinitely shino stalling or puffs ledge camping is way worse. I remember seeing some brawl matches back in the day where people camped Smashville moving plat that looked way worse. I understand that icies ultimately shouldn't have to do anything because they're winning, but in that case what is the problem exactly? In the past stalling rules were always to prevent hyper degenerate strategies where one player gets a quick lead and then runs away with it avoiding all combat. Half the stages in melee are banned for these sorts of strategies (hyrule temple, dk64, brinstar depths, etc). Is it just about the content now? We have Caesar watch the games and if the crowd boos he just gives the thumbs down and the players are executed with no warning? Sounds whack to me honestly.

To be clear, the only real issue here was that the Zelda was going to waste the streamers and the viewers time, I doubt the ICs was going to file a complaint, or that it would have been taken seriously by the TO if he saw said hypothetical complaint after the fact. And for your final point, yeah, I mean, I agree it'd be pretty scummy to do this at a real major or any offline/entry fee tournament, but if a streamer wants to host a tournament for their viewers in a free to enter bracket, run by themselves and someone comes in and tries to ruin the viewing experience, specifically by not playing, I don't blame the streamer and I don't feel sorry for the player if they get DQ'd or a forced game loss or whatever technically happened.

TL;DR: Timer is way too big. The only reason y'all hate stalling is because your shitty ruleset dictates that the player is to keep-away for eight agonizing minutes to win. With the only deterrents (should any even be necessary) being: 1. Getting bored/impatient. 2. Getting banned by the totally level-headed TO. Look. The player should only care about one thing. Playing to win. The rules should not go against this, they should be minimal, only exist to make up for necessary in-built functionalities that are not already present, or act as an agreed-upon standard that outlines exactly what in-game features are/aren't authorized (which of course can always be gentlemanned). The game should be allowed to be what it is, and if people don't like it, they should play a different one. Instead of arbitrarily deciding someone is not playing entertainingly enough, how about we for once think about the fact that this is a competition? Assuming both players are playing to win, the current ruleset is in direct fucking conflict with what the TO wants, what the viewers want, what the competitors want, AND how the game was designed. By having dumbfuck rules like these, or banning shit, you admit that the game is not well-designed, and are assuming the position of the gamedev in an attempt to fix it. With that said, the timer you all choose to play with is way too big in smash games. I might go so far as to say that even six minutes is too long. Timeouts are hype, and every other fighting game under the sun allows the player to use the timer as a tool to win just like any other. Sadly smash players only play smash. I almost unironically want to say that y'all should just say screw using stocks, and do 4-minute time-battle. Coming from someone who has actually played more than just smash, I'll admit it might not be inherently better than stocks, but it sure as hell makes more sense than making these blurry-ass house rules where running away is the boogeyman, and stalling is a bannable offense. Running away can be a really viable strategy, if it wasn't supposed to be done sometimes, then the game wouldn't be designed the way it was. If you think the game is not well-designed, and does not provide an adequate competitive setting, why are you playing it? A logical mf wouldn't "try and make it work" with some bullshit imaginary restrictions. They would simply play something else. Running away in a traditional fighter with a 3-min timer was never a problem because it doesn't happen all the fuckin time, the round still has to be played at least for the first half to get any real lead, and only a minute max has to actually be spent running away to successfully time someone out. Mind you, those games don't typically have zoning tools as oppressive as melee fox lasers or Samus missiles forcing people to close the gap, or hyper-fast analogue movement that allows those in pursuit an infinite number of ways to coax the staller into throwing out a punishable panic button. We have fireballs that are negative on-hit at close-range, and do minuscule damage. Side note: Nobody seems to give a fuck about the integrity of a good-old competition anymore. I really don't think much legitimate thought is put into actually dissecting and understanding platforms for competitive practice. Situations like what is shown in the video above, instances where characters get banned, as well as situations where players themselves get banned all stack up to create an event that, at the end of the day, determines... Fucking nothing. 1. Half the good players are banned. 2. The best character got banned. 3. The players are puppeteered around in real-time mid-match to play in a certain way with no clear boundary-lines. In the world of competition, you are simply no longer playing Ultimate! Just play PM or some shit at that point! Stop beating around the bush lmao! All these companies, sponsors, and investors are starting to realize this after dumping millions of dollars into the incinerator that is most modern esports. They are all pulling out because you guys utterly failed to do the most basic shit: Just play the damn video game! If people simply played games they truly knew were great, this shit would not be an issue! Random fucking rules would not need to be thought up because people would rather just play a good game instead! Bad games would sell like shit and be cast aside, while good games would thrive! Re-commenting because I believe it is a valid point. Personally, I believe stalling rules should be enforced to both the winning and losing players because it would stay true to ensuring viewing entertainment. Rewarding one side and punishing the other is a little biased. In this case, I believe the DQ was a correct decision. However, if the ICs player had also continued to not engage, they should have been penalized as well or the penalties should have been offset. Clearly as the match went on, the ICs player had engaged while the Zelda player continued to run (refusal to play) and was then promptly DQ'd which was a correct decision in my opinion.

I disagree. Stalling is running down the clock by making yourself uninteractable or EXTREMELY hard to interact with without a massive imbalance in risk/reward. This simply isnt that. My rule of thumb is this. If the precents and stocks were reversed, would this be stalling? If so, its not stalling. its camping while down. A sonic running away and avoiding all interaction while up isnt stalling. Its camping and trying to time out. A perfectly valid strategy. Doing it while down is stupid on their part, but its still just camping. Its just camping while down. Thats all that Zelda was doing. Camping while down. Stupid yes, staling no. Even if their intention was just to BM and run down the clock, so what? Just wait 3 minutes and the game will be over and they lose. Its not a big deal. Its only a big deal if you MAKE it a big deal. Seriously, if the TO just did nothing about the zelda camping while down, they would have just lost, and literally none of this drama would have happened. nobody would have cared in the slightest about this set, and everyone would have just moved on because it didnt matter. This stuff would never be banned at majors, nor should it, and so it shouldn't be banned at locals or wifi events either. And it also doesnt even make tournaments run longer either. One person once every 5-10 tournaments running out the clock for an extra 3-4 minutes in one game because they were salty is not going to make a tournament run noticeably longer. Some guy taking a shit mid-set is going to take longer than someone doing a salty timeout and losing. Its not an actual problem that needs to be solved. Just let the clock run down, let the zelda lose on time, and then move on. Enforcing a rule on it just looks bad. Especially a made up rule on the spot mid game. Its not like the rule "You cannot camp while down" was written anywhere.

@@eragon78 It's a problem because people besides the players have to experience that time too. Camping is different because when you camp, you're actually putting pressure on the other person to push the action. Camping while down, doesn't put pressure on the other person unless you are actively poking at the leader, which this Zelda was, instead, actively avoiding. Edit: Also, your definition of stalling is as made up as any other definition of stalling that anybody else is using to call what the Zelda did stalling because, as far as I'm aware there has been no competitive gaming community consensus to rigidly define the word stalling so policing the use of the word as an argument is kind of wack.
@eragon78
@eragon78 Год назад
@@rollingkollingsolling964 It does, Camping while down works a shockingly large amount of the time because opponents get impatient. I mean look at this very example with how often the Icies kept running in and getting punished for it. The Zelda was litterally winning interactions because he was camping while down and the Icies was getting impatient. Also, my definition of stalling is whats used when TOs actually ban certain actions. The stuff that gets banned for being "stalling" never comes down to "well, they just were avoiding interactions". It always gets banned because it heavily skews the risk/reward of approaching vs not approaching, and it leads to situations where its overpowered or non-competitive when someone gets a lead. Something like Peach side B into stage under the stage in melee over and over again is considered stalling because trying to challenge her has a TON of risk for the person trying to catch her. This means if Peach ever gets a slight lead in a match, she could just run off stage and side B into the stage over and over and it would be incredibly difficult to ever pull back a lead because you risk dying every time you want to even challenge her. It extremely heavily skews the risk/reward in her favor and you're forced to try to punish her cuz youre down. This is the same for all other stalling tactics. infinite wobbling, MK infinite cape glitch, Puff pound stalling, various forms of planking, etc. The issue with them is the non-competitive nature of the heavily skewed risk-reward. It has nothing to do with just running away. Stuff like circle camping has always been legal. Stuff like Sonic spin dashing from one side of the stage to the other to run away has always been legal. None of this stuff has ever been considered stalling. Literally the only difference with what this Zelda was doing was that he was just not engaging while he was losing. But there was no anti-competitive nature to it. There was no heavily skewed risk/reward here. Thats why this sort of thing has never ever been banned at any actual major. People have done similar stuff throughout the game's history and its never been banned. The ACTUAL stalling stuff that HAS been banned is categorically different.

@@eragon78 But in this case the TO is using a different definition of stalling so turning to other TOs as sources of authority is dumb when you are using it to question a different TOs decision in their own tournament. Once again camping while down works when you're applying pressure, which the Zelda never was. Spamming projectiles from across the stage is applying pressure dash dancing, but not approaching applies pressure running to the opposite end of stage and putting down your controller doesn't do anything accept communicate that you have no desire to play. Finally, again anything can be considered boring to watch, anything can be considered wasting time the difference was that the Zelda's actions were judged by the TO to have a single purpose, which was to waste time. When Sonix times out his opponents he is still very active, still trying to avoid a punish and bait mistakes, even if that is through avoiding interactions. Also, another reason it will never be banned at a major or in-person event is because it can't be monitored, but when you do it in grand finals at EVO, of course it becomes a problem.

You get a percent lead, then camp understand and its really hard to challenge peach without risking a ton while she risks very little. She can just run down the clock with a lead and there is very little you can do. That is stalling, and that is banned. Or Brawl MK where he gets a percent lead, then infinite cape glitch's to make himself uninteractable for the rest of the match. That is broken and that is stalling. Or Icies infinite wobbling. You grab someone once on equal stocks, then wobble them forever until the clock runs down. Thats stalling. That is why these things are banned, because theyre uncompetitive, not because theyre "boring to watch". Camping and timeouts are perfectly legal in all smash games. HBox timing people out with puff? 100% legal. Sonix in ultimate running away all game and timing people out with sonic? 100% legal. People dont camp while down at top level not because its banned or because its boring, but because its bad. Its simply not an issue at top level because camping while down vs a top player, and the top player isnt going to approach you and let you time yourself out and lose. Going from 8 to 6 minutes doesn't show much change and considering not everyone plays for TIME. (under the assumption that time-outs are boring:) The true way to get rid of time-outs or stalling would be to get rid of the clock altogether. Having the clock and punishing players for using it does not make sense to me.

The difference here is that the ICs had the lead, and so was already winning by doing nothing. Zelda had many ways to avoid being DQd for stalling as Zelda has plenty of safe ranged attacks especially from that distance, but instead chose to literally stand there for nearly a full minute. Seems like a very valid call by the TO to me.

It wasn't that the zelda didn't want to play anymore, Zelda wanted to force ice climbers to approach without having anything to force the ice climbers to approach, except the threat that they won't have a successfull game unless the climbers come from a point of disadvantage. That is not skill, it is disagreeableness. Zelda could have just used projectiles and take all the risks that come with it (there is always a right answer to projectiles). But no, it had to be "either you approach or we don't play anymore". That was dirty play. Mewto king did the same in melee when he hung from the edge with his marth. And he got booed for that. I have to deal with that so often as a zoner on platform stages. the people have nothing to force me to approach, yet think that it somehow works

Shorten the timer or explicitly state “no longer than x seconds of continuous inactivity, or a combined inactivity exceeding y seconds in a match”. Agree with the TO decision but it will prevent the issue from occurring again because what happens when a TO just allows it to go on, it’s their discretion so it’s cool per the rules.

People have proposed similar solutions like this in the past comparing it to a shot clock like in the NBA. I think it would be a little hard to enforce but if it's an excessive amount of time like in this case, it should be a no brainer. I wouldn't mind seeing it implemented

Nahhh not stalling. There's a timer for a reason, and they aren't making their opponent face some insane risk/reward. Like all the ICs had to do was pressure slightly left of center stage and the Zelda would have to play the game. This isn't some Melee Peach on Kongo Jungle 64 type shit. Zelda doing that is basically taunting. If the ICs was a little rager maybe he gets mad at the teeter animation and does some dumb shit. It's all part of the game.

The decision after the fact would have done nothing though? Player was down a game and a stock and had effectively given up, but decided to make the game take as long as possible for some reason. What good is telling someone they're DQ'd after they've already lost? How does that help the tournament in any way? If the player is being DQ'd for something they are actively doing right that moment, why should the TO sit there and wait for them as they continue breaking a rule right in front of them? So they can tell them after there are no consequences that they're DQ'd? After the tourny was delayed by pure salt that they're enforcing the rule that prevents tourneys from being delayed by pure salt? That's not enforcing a rule, that's just chastising a player after the rule is broken, that's just nothing.

Lowering the timer makes timing out a more effective strategy which incentivizes people to try and time out more often. Lower the timer from 7 min to 5 min, and now you have a dozen top players playing sonic and running out the clock because its way easier to do. 7 Minutes is already cutting it close. Timeouts are a very valid strategy at 7 minutes, but theyre juuuuuust hard enough that not everyone goes for them. Lowering it anymore and timeouts become WAY easier and youll see them WAY more often as well as people intentionally going for them to win way more often. So lowering the timer anymore would be a bad idea.

at 7:00 I would argue there is a limit, and that is the timer. If the zelda player waited for 5 minutes they would lose the game. That's the clearest line that can be drawn, and both players would have full knowledge of this when waiting.

You can't say the strategy wasn't working when after a minute and a half the ic approached like a dumbass and almost got gimped to me if you're standing on the stage in neutral it's fair game stuff like pound stalling off /under stage, peach bomber under stage and flying under the stage as mk in brawl is stalling where characters can't hit you without sd or significant risk of sd. Not excusing the Zelda player for clearly being childish but to me that's still a free win and I'm down to wait the full 8 minutes to advance in bracket and when you really think about it all they're doing is wasting the precious time they have on this earth just to lose anyway and something about that makes these kinds of wins extra satisfying I don't want the t.o to take that away from me.
@noisepollution4473
@noisepollution4473 Год назад
The rules literally exist because people say "I'm down to wait for 8 minutes for a free win" The rule exists 100% to prevent rewarding players for waiting for 8 minutes for a free win because everyone except the player who actually wins that way doesn't value that style of play. People are olay with winning that way because people want to win at any cost. The stalling rule exists because people are willing to stall. Taking that option away from players is fine. If items were on, the winning strategy would be to grab every broken item possible. People would do it because it would help them win, even if its boring, cheesy, and random. Our ruleset says "no items" because we don't want people to use that strategy. The no stalling rule is the same. We just don't have an inbuilt way to enforce it like we do with items. So... TO's discretion.

At this point either remove the timer or remove the stalling rule, otherwise it's illogical to have both. Edit: You claim there was no intention to engage but that is also true from the Ice Climbers' side, it takes 2 people to stall. This is only rewarding the person already winning so all you're doing is reducing the loser's options, people should learn to adapt to the gameplay not do it backwards 🤦‍♂
