Hi man, see this solo with slide in standard tuning of Led Zeppelin:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pe8IcE2Fg3o.html if you like it watch the other videos and subscribe.
I must echo Dino below. This is absolutely the best starting guide to standard tuning. You provide the logic behind the positions, and this logic is translatable to far more than slide.
Wow, John. What a fantastic lesson. Thank you - this has opened whole new worlds in playing slide in standard tuning. So much appreciation for your kindness. Thank you.
This was REALLY GOOD, John! I also have a Dobro that is in E Tuning, and that's because it has an EDGE Bender bridge on it, which UPS 3 of the strings with its lever.....very cool as well. I will "practice" with your video. I also recently bought the Squier Tele 40th Anniv Gtr and a Certano G & B Bender, both of which are now with a Luthier getting the bender installed. So now I'm ready for bear with this array. What also seems to be GOOD is that you didn't need or use any other special devices to have to raise the string level to play slide. I have an 80's Era Ovation that I'll try your methods with....thanks a bunch!
Hey John, I've been playing slide guitar for a lot of years. I really enjoy it and I enjoy watching and listening to others play it. I also play primarily in standard tuning. Occasionally I'll check out a video of someone teaching beginners in hopes that young players will get excited about playing slide guitar and keep the art form alive. I have to say, you've done an excellent job here. This is an excellent lesson for beginners. God Bless you brother and keep up the good work. 😎
Thanks for the positive feedback Tim. There is still plenty of interest out there. Most of my students start with an open tuning. If they get better and enjoy it, I’ll coax them into trying standard tuning.
John this is just what I needed..thankyou for such clear advice! I think knowing barre chords is useful in navigating the fret board esp for slide. Super video , helping many like me. Cheers!👍
I love picking up wisdom and these funny “rules”. I watched this from my bed and having messed with slide for years now and still had epiphanies. Great work
I knew most of this but didn't think of it as it relates to slide. The most important line was about learning to play single notes with slide instead of just banging away on all the strings. That trick with the lightest gage strings being a minor is brilliant. It's all about learning where you are on the fretboard and how to get from one place to another. Great job!!
Glad this was helpful. You can get many types of chords using 1 finger in standard tuning. Major, minor, 6th, 9th and major 7 to name a few. I give a lesson called 1 finger guitar, maybe I post it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, friend. That’s largely how I look at guitar soloing - F D A chord shapes (inversions, triads or whatever) both major and minor. So I’m watching this and going, “Forking hell, I’ve known all along how to approach slide, dadblastit!”
George Harrison used standard tuning primarily. So does Warren Haynes. I gave slide up a long time back because I didn't like relearning the fret board. Not long afterwards I learned about George using standard tuning. I tried it and have been playing slide since.
