The paint test reflects how my old monogram zero paint mule seems to be just fine with all the different paint types I throw at it.

You know i was amazed there wasnt some drastic reactions with this experiment. There must be something to what you were saying about better formula and technology with the modern paints. I agree better be safe by testing on scrap plastic first. Nice video really enjoyed it.

That was a great explanation of how different types of paints work with each other and how most of what is read on the web is a myth. Thank for you including our lacquers in the tests - I'll be sharing it around to help educate people more about using multiple paint types on their builds and how it can be beneficial to do so.

My experience has been that you're generally going to get good results as long as you allow the base coat to completely dry/gas out.

Regarding paint interaction, or lack thereof, I've had very pleasing results using a Rustoleum flat black primer in a rattle can, then Tamiya acrylics for the color coat, followed by Tamiya acrylic gloss coat, enamels and/or oils from a couple of sources for chipping effects and weathering, finished with Tamiya acrylic flat or semi-gloss coat. YMMV

I think a better explanation of how paints cure in different ways is in order. It’s important to note that lacquer acrylics can reactivate lacquer acrylics they’re being applied over since they don’t undergo the same molecular change (cross linking) or curing process that water based acrylics do (it’s why water acrylics can’t be washed off with their own thinner, which is water). In the case of lacquer based spray cans, and even airbrushing, simply giving the paint enough time to flash off between light to medium coats can prevent any reactivation of underlying lacquer paints, and any checking of other formulations. Additionally, enough curing time can make almost any paint resistant, and that’s especially true with enamels which can take days, weeks, months to fully cure. I suspect this was the problem when you sprayed over the enamel and had the one spot of irregular finish.

The diorama with the B-17 on top of a gas station is neat. The real B-17 , that it was based on, is currently being restored by the B-17 Alliance Foundation.

Have you done a segment on clear coats over various paints example clear lacquer over acrylic paint

you should have included GSI Mr Color in your test, I think most compatibility problems are related to that paint. I had quite some bad experience with Mr Color over Humbrol enamel - and viceversa - and even over their own acrylics, Mr Hobby.

Added the Thunderbolt to my wishlist, it looks like a great kit to build. The footage from the Nationals was really good too, makes me feel like I am terrible at models (I am!) but so much talent there.

Can paint any type of paint, over any other type of paint, so long as the previous layer has fully cured.

I use enamel AK extreme metals over Mission Models black primer. Never had a problem. I do give a good amount of time for the primer to dry to have all the water evaporate.

Great on the paint combos. Looking at the photos...I seek to match my armor to my aircraft and my figurines in the same scale so all matches. Any specific suggestions on which scale would give me the end result of the best overall outcomes with the most versatility and wide ranging? Thanks

Put a enamel wash on the spoons and swoosh it around with a paint brush and watch what happens. When weathering is where problems happen.
@FineScaleModelermagazine
@FineScaleModelermagazine 10 месяцев назад
Well, sure, if you're just going to hit the paint with a thinner that interacts with it (which a wash is essentially dirty thinner), of course it's going to cause problems. As always, clear coat first to protect the underlying paint, and then come in with acrylic, enamel, and oil washes.

I would suggest that you put a piece of tape on each spoon and then remove said tape and see what happens. My experience is that the enamel and lacquer paints chemically bond better with the plastic and therefore won’t lift off. An enamel or lacquer paint over acrylic will tend to lift the underlying coat of acrylic off the plastic. That’s why I usually paint the acrylic last. As for as the chemical reaction between the lacquer and enamel paints, it may depend on the drying time between layers 11:59 and strength of the underlying solvent used in the overlying paint.
@viper29ca
@viper29ca 10 месяцев назад
The only thing touching the plastic on any of these, is the Tamiya primer. None of the paints tested are over bare plastic
@bennettrogers7921
@bennettrogers7921 10 месяцев назад
@@viper29ca I guess I should have prefaced it as without primer use. The purpose of the primer fixes that issue. Although, I’ll need to see how acrylics stick to lacquer primers, but I’m guessing they probably bond fairly well.
@viper29ca
@viper29ca 10 месяцев назад
@@bennettrogers7921 They adhere just fine to lacquers. While I use 90% vallejo products in my building, I have used Vallejo over Tamiya lacquer primers with no issues.

@@viper29ca many thanks for your reply. I have been hesitant to use primers in the past for fear of losing some of the fine detail, but I’m beginning to think that I was incorrect in my concerns. My thanks for information.
@viper29ca
@viper29ca 10 месяцев назад
@@bennettrogers7921 as long as you aren't flooding it on, then you should be fine. I generally airbrush everything as I have more control and not putting a crap ton of product down. Tamiya rattle can primers are actually pretty good and don't flood your kit, but still prefer to use the airbrush, even if I have to decent a particular color. You will sometimes find that you will get more detail come out after a coat of primer is on

Tim, could you please comment on the chemistry of the SMS paint? I've recently read about some new lacquer paints based on glycol rather then the more conventional toluene / ketone / MEK based carrier. I would imagine such a thing would be much friendlier to enamel and acrylic paints under them. I'm curious if SMS would be such a thing.

Our Acrylic Lacquers are predominately Acetone based with a little Xylene and Toulene to help aid with levelling and sheen. They are formulated to work safely with modelling plastics by lowering the mix amounts of the hotter solvents and increasing the others that aren't as hot. This allows the paint to keep the same properties but be much safer to use on plastics.

Hi, I would like to see those spoons in one o two weeks, I think the acrylic - loaquer will crak the enamel paint. It's important to say that the thinner used could donne different results, hardware lacquer thinner is much hotter than model pant thinners.

Those spoons have been painted for about a month now, and the finish hasn't changed. You can see a photo of them here: finescale.com/videos/2023/08/finescale-modeler-weekly-episode-25 Again, not an exhaustive test.

I'm not a chemist, but I'm guessing that with modern paint the differences in composition between them may not be as different as they used to be - thus they react more alike.
