G’day guys and im back with another video. This time ive added water propagation to the game. Water now flows down into holes and across the terrain. I went with a ‘gamified’ type of simulation instead of a more realistic approach as it allows for predictability in gameplay. I also really wanted to support things like waterfalls which is really difficult to do with a realistic simulation. This is just the first iteration on the mechanic but I think it’s on the right track.

looks pretty good! only things i would say are to make it an option to speed up water like "watertickrate" or somesht and make the water flow and be finite instead of having infinite water pools everywhere, like terraria does it. and also maybe a way to remove the particles or increase the rate of particles. other than that it looks cool

That was my thought, but I wonder if it might be intensive on performance, hence why it's so slow here.

Little bit late, but coming from someone who worked in a studio trying to pull this off, it's nearly impossible with modern tech, its almost viable with Minecraft-sized blocks hence the existing mods for Minecraft that do it, but even those barely perform well, and still takes ages to flood a cave fully for example. Even smaller voxels just straight up makes it impossible at any reasonable scale :(

​@@franciscojusto4744 He didn't actually, It's Particle-based fluid not voxels, which is what our studio ended up with as well, its Particles with raymarching to render as voxels. In fact, a lot of John Lin's stuff is "faked" voxels, like the grass isn't voxels, its billboard particles squares facing the camera they really sell the effect though.

I really hope the water will be moveable somehow, this game is asking for a zen garden of sorts with all kinds of cool waterworks! Great work!

Dam been trying to make a voxle game for a few months after seeing this I feel I should just give up gg dude hope it turns out well can’t wait to buy a copy and play it

don't give up! i believe in you! it may seem like nothing you do looks good but trust me. at one point it will start looking good and slowly and surely you'll love what you have made. keep working and don't let scope creep kill your game!

Is it computational issue to have the water flow quicker? So far I've only seen one tech dev where water actually flows like is should and it's fantastic.

Don’t think of it as small voxels, think of it as a large player. It’s exactly like Minecraft but with a higher than normal render distance rate. Also note that each voxel has a single color texture so there’s not near as much data being transferred

Looks good. when you dig a hole you get more water right it does not move into the hole. Does it's mean you can not drain ponds?

a thing i think you should change is not in this video but im posting it on the newest video so you can see, but the stalagmites, look off, they look more like a thing the game just plops down in caves instead of apart of the generation, more shapes and sizes would be cool(two stalagmites close to each depending on the length and size could combine together) also what if water grew stalagmites if over a thing layer of stone? maybe lava could turn stone into charred stone and magma if those are in the game

btw I am nitpicing to find every little thing wrong so that it can be improved on at some point, and all I can say is that the water is to slow and infinite. This is great.

seed of andromeda has some interesting physics, it's no longer worked on but it is open source for quite a while now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eKQYRFYXCWk.html maybe you can borrow some of the code ideas from it

Looks more like blue goo. Propagation is far too slow. The "spash particles" are also unnecessary considering the slow movement.
