thank god I wasn't privy to this stuff while I was in school. I've ALWAYS been a playstation kid but my parents were very anti-gaming so I was stuck with my aunt's old ps2 until I got my own ps4 in 2017 or so. point being, I didn't really understand how accessible remote play was until I got my ps5 a couple years ago after I had already been done with school. If I had the ability to bring nothing but a controller and my phone with me and basically play wherever I went I really don't think I would've gotten much of anything done.

I have both. Tried it on laptop, ipad, ps portal, and 15 pro max. Portal is genuinely very good but tbh the ipad with a good connection is really good too. Those two are optimal. I say those two as its literally better on laptop but that has to be a premium one. So most people dont have that. Id prefer the portal for convenience. Hope that helps people decide

The portal does feel nice in hand but the problem I keep running into is that this is not a great gaming experience. If you’re sensitive to frame rate stutters, ghosting, input lag and constant resolution fluctuations then stay far away from remote play on the portal or any other device. The one thing that happens while playing remote play on my iPhone or iPad that will not happen on the portal are Bluetooth connection issues with my Dualsense. The portal was a waste of money and I love my gaming devices. I wish it had direct connect like the WiiU when I’m playing at home.

My experience is different. Remote play on my s22 ultra and ipads stutters like heck locally. So I had the impression that the portal will perform the same way. Well its my 3rd day with the portal and its damn flawless in my case. Sony needs to fix the remote play app because for 3rd party devices. it doesn't make sense that remote play on my phone works well on 5G mobile and remote on another network but doesn't on my local network. I even upgraded my router to a gaming router the same day I got my portal. Even with the new router remote play on my phone and ipads sucks on my network. But the portal OH MAN is amazing!

The one thing I want to ask... Is which is the better way to remote play when you're not at home. As in when your pc is in one city and you're in another. Which is best for lag less experience

Same performance if you have a new phone or one that's 2 years or less then you'll get same experience as your phone can run the internet connection the same as the ps portal can. The difference in how it runs is how good is your wifi at your house and where you are because the game has to basically be uploaded through the internet and streamed on your device in real time so it's about internet connection not the device if you have a iphone 14 or newer or the s22 or newer you're just as fast as that ps portal is. My s24 ultra does better than the portal.

I’m torn between the gen 2 backbone and the ps portal I’m wanting to still be able to play with my friends while on vacation or outta town and some family event my wife drags me to but for the 100 bucks difference in price the portal not being able to connect blue tooth I’m leaning more to the backbone. Will I still be content with that?

If you have got a newer USB 3.0 iPhone, tablet or Andriod phone then go for the newly released GameSir G8 Galileo instead. It's a much better controller than the Backbone and only costs $80. The only possible downsides to it is that it has a Xbox layout, if you mind that sort of thing.

backbone is garbage! you will not be able to play on your phone with a phone case. I am currently using the Gamevice Flex playstation version and it's perfectly working great! It can support most phone cases on the market and it has different modification clips to support your phone case. Using backbone, no one would like to remove here and there their phone cases. But with gamevice flex, you don't have to worry about that issue. Im using 14promax with spigen tough armor.

U didn’t mention the WiFi demand vs possibly using cellular. For some, the strong mandatory WiFi is a deal breaker.

The same goes both. They each require Wi-Fi or strong cellular. The cellular on your phone can tether to the Portal.

One of the main reasons I dropped using my phone for remote play for years and embraced the Portal (other than the massive screen) is no more pairing controllers back and forth between phone and console. So sick of that.

I feel like having the remote is just extra delay me personally I play on mine a lot and if you’re playing some simple shit it’s really not an issue but if you’re playing a game that requires extreme precision, it’s gonna be a I played a ghost of Tsushima and it worked perfectly fine. I was able to carry on point and everything.

And if I’m being honest, having to sit your phone up and adjust, it is a lot of work and you’re not gonna be comfortable on a little screen unless you have a tablet even then you still have to put it somewhere up at least with the PlayStation remote can hold the remote while having the screen in your face and your neck don’t hurt

1. Yes it has to be in rest mode to utilize remote play. 2. The portal has never been confined to home WiFi.

I know Colticus has answered most of your questions, but just to reiterate. Yes, the PS5 has to be in rest mode which is where I keep mine all the time. It won't hurt the console at all. Basically just consumes a little more power to keep it idling. And then yeah, it works at home over Wi-Fi or any where else remote assuming you have fast enough internet.

I had high expectations for PSPortal but it failed. If it was superior input delay for the past remote play app yeah than it would be worth it. Im sticking with the RemotePlay app with the Dualsense controller and a mount with iphone

The backbone is actually pretty amazing. I had an Abxylute device that I ended up selling since I like my iPhone and backbone more. Fits my iPhone 15 pro max just fine with a MagSafe Rebel case.

I had the Portal for almost two weeks, believe me, just use your phone with Remote Play. The input lag and latency is a buzzkill if you play games such as The Finals/Overwatch, good luck aiming and re-learning what you already familiar with due to needing to compensate the latency.

But reviews and common understanding state that this is not a device for competitive play. That's not what it is targeted for, if you are attempting to play games like that competitively then you will likely be using a monitor with high refresh rate 120hz mode for low input lag, hard wired ethernet connected ps5 for lowest possible latency, and obviously playing natively from the console and not streaming a video capture which is what is happening. Doesn't matter if it's geforce now , remote play , Xbox cloud it's all the same principles and downsides that apply.

@@ThePaulg123 thanks for the reply, agreed, though never have I said anything about being competitive. My point is the input lag and latency on the Remote Play app from my phone is miles better than the Portal which its sole purpose is for Remote Play. I do have a 120Hz VRR tv set but all it does now is play Bluey on repeat, all I ask of the Portal is to stream at least as good as my phone but here we are. Also, I have been subscribing to GFN and their datacenter are definitely much farther located than my PS5 (which is in the same home) but still perform better than remote play on the Portal. I am only being critical of the Portal and in no way do I hope for it to fail. You can still enjoy the Portal while being critical of it, in my case I did enjoyed it for a brief while, but returned it for reason mentioned. I exclusively play remote play on my Rog Ally now via Chiaki4Deck which ironically runs better than the Portal which had one job.

The new backbone usb gen 2 is BEAUTIFUL. highly recommend, plus more versatile than this imo. Can use remote play, Xbox game pass, Apple Arcade, steam etc etc.

Neither. iPad remote play, or steam deck. You can get a much bigger and nicer screen from an IPad and use the ps5 controller. If you must have a hand held form factor you can easily set up ps remote play on your stream deck and get so much more out of it.

I’ve been using my iPad at hotels. I’ve been using a ps5 controller and a usbc to HTMI controller to connect to the tv. It’s like having my PlayStation with me on the road. I’m happy to not have to carry around the portal with me. I have enough things to keep track of on the road.

I've had the backbone for my s22 ultra for a couple of weeks. And also just received my portal last night. On local PS remote play on my s22 and iPads stutter like heck. I thought is was my router so I changed it to a gaming router along with new cat5 last night as well. And yes my ps5 has always been hardwired. But even upgrading my router I have same problems with remote play on my s22 and ipads on both 2GHZ even worse on 5GHZ it stutters like hell. Though remote on 5g mobile while stationary or on another ntwork it works like a dream. I cant figure that out. Then i set up portal. Absolutely flawless performance on my local network. Haven't tried it remotely yet on another network. So this leads me to believe that ps remote play app is flawed or there are definitely hardware and or software advantages to make Portal stream flawlessly. PlayStation needs to fix the bugs on ps remote play because I Also used game pass and it performs very well no matter which device I'm using. And that goes through a busy server.

@@ronytomano alot of these gamer influencers gave me the impression that remote play on a phone or ipad perform the same as a portal on the local network your ps5 is on. In my case it definitely definitely doesn't. This is only my 3rd day with the portal and it performs consistently, no stutters. Sony really hit it out of the park with the portal. Its far beyond my expectations. I have the switch as well and the portal performs 50 times better. I tested overwatch on both and on the switch is just sad .

You should use the third party PSplay app instead. It generally is regarded by the remoteplay community as the better remoteplay app than the official one.

iPhone 15 Pro Max owners buy Backbone Ver. 2 controller ($50 Costco), that works with phone cases. Better screen, apps, native gaming (RE4, Village, Death Stranding, GTA series) + you get PS Remote. AND it can TRAVEL. Portal has no web browser for wifi access at hotels etc that require sign in. Dumb.

Hey friend. Did a whole video on Backbone. First -- Dualsense controller still better. BUT the point of this is specifically around playstation. You can use any controller you want with your iPhone and use the playstation app.

No debate the dual sense controller is better. But for casual gaming on the go or travelling it’s fine, much better than the touch screen controls. The BB I find is more practical, can fit in your pocket and you phone always with your anyway. Even endorsed by Sony PlayStation.

Backbone does have the USB-C model. It was quietly released in December. It was specifically for iPhone 15. The bottom of the box will have a decal 2ND GEN, and the front cover has COD Warzone Mobile icon on the screen. GL.

Yes. It’s a paperweight, without a PS5. Look at it like this, it’s basically a controller with a mini screen that accesses the PS5 remotely. Whether that is over your home network or if you are out and about, over a public network while your PS5 is connected to your home network. If you have poor internet speeds, this also might be laggy and give a poor experience.

@PlayStation, please fix this bug ASAP: i did customized controller button in my ps5, switched X abd O buttons, but when i use my ps portal playing games, the switched button settings don't work! I can't find any way to switch the X and O buttons in my ps portal!!! Sony PlayStation, please be aware of this issue and fix it ASAP, thanks you so much ❤

I just bought a PS Portal but it is slower and have a lot of hiccups low fps than when I use remote play on my iPhone. I was playing it on my iPhone even with PS5 4k HDR ALLM VRR on and it was perfectly fine playing Monster Hunter World. Still bought yesterday a PS Portal to experience the greatness but I get disappointed because of the lag issues. I tried doing all fixings like lower PS5 to 1080p, remove HDMI cable from console, placed a wifi repeater used as Access Point with hard wired ethernet cable on it while on 7ft away from me but still slower. delay on by choosing the game icons from home screen shows slower as well. remote play and graphics is better on my iPhone. But still I'm trying to figure out more maybe I missed something to make PS Portal perform better. hopefully future updates will make good changes

I simply can not use one of these portal devices due to the simple design choice Sony made of putting the analog sticks directly up against the edges of the screen. It creates a tangent, absolutely triggering my OCD and breaking any level of visual immersion when there’s something hugging the edge of the display literally one pixel away from the screen’s edge pixels. I might even consider still using one if they offered a scaled down mode that gave a fatter edge of black around the screen edges. As a visual media professional, it’s just a cardinal sin to make such a design choice.

Ummmmm, for iOS PS remote play only works on home network currently, it’s broken. No one is making noise about this not even guys reviewing iOS PS remote play?????? I found a work around, you have to use a VPN if your not on your home network or else iPhone no matter what says your connection is too slow. Sad they make a PS remote play controller for iOS and the whole thing has been broken for months, unless your within feet of your console. Sony support told me to use an android device as the solution to trouble shooting not working, test it yourself. Turn off Wi-Fi and try to connect with mobile data.

My kid really wants a Playstation. I'm going to delay as long as I can to see if the Apple games push pans out. What surprises me is that there is no Backbone type of controller that I've found that works with an iPad. Trying to use a controller with an iPad places the screen at the wrong viewing distance.

Homeboy got his portal from Playstation because he told them he would push it as the better option over your phone so of course he is going to say PS portal. Its a failure already. Playstation knows they made a tablet with a ps5 controller connected and they fucked up lol. Its way too expensive when youve already paid 500 dollars for the console. Ill take my phone as my s24 ultra 1 tb has better graphics and screen than that shitty tablet and i dont mind just not texting or calling when im playing my game with my controller lol.

it would be better if you would use a normal voice, rather than youtube announcer style voice with *zip*, *zing* and *flair*. don't take it the wrong way, i can tell you work hard on the videos and they're good. it's just that 'i'm a fancy broadcaster' youtube style that is all too common is also way out of style. just use your normal voice like Marques Brownlee or other 'regular voice' youtubers. your end product will be better and easier to watch. thanks.

Aside from the fact that this is an Apple-focused channel where our subscribers are typically Apple users, this all is the same, even when considering Android devices. The basic question is what's better: Playstation Portal OR any other device with the PS Remote Play app and a DualSense controller. I'm not talking about other gaming or streaming services at all. Just PlayStation Remote.

The correct answer is: Both are terrible! Get a Switch and a gaming laptop/desktop = get to play almost all exclusives as intended by God!

Literally not a solution this case for PS5 owners at all. It would cost more to do either of those than to just get a controller for your phone or a portal. And even at the end of the day, you’re not able to play ALL ps5 games and you’d have to either rebuy games on pc or not have access to any of the same titles at all like on switch. It’s a good thing you don’t make these videos

@@extra4542 i don’t make these videos because I have a higher paying job. Anything can be “vital” if you want it to be. I NEED TO EAT ICE CREAM EVERYDAY and cakes are NOT an alternative, because …… I do have a PS5, Xbox series X, Switch, and a gaming rig (i9 4090 oc).
