i am beginning to believe that you people get your own likes instead of earning them through funny jokes, but im not surprised, you are a woman after all
this is a French comedy from the 1960's, your are so dumb. To me or someone else of my own intellect, it is quite easy to see that this film is not a Japanese Role-Playing Game (J.R .P .G.), but rather a satirical criticism of metropolises and the robotic monotony of the office paradigm of the 20th century. I can not believe that there are people like you, you probably do not even understand "Rick and Morty"
Besides, TommyInnit already made a review about this movie. Is Dunkey still mad about the Dolphin Tweet? Way to go Dunkey, you are nitpicking and biased. I win, bye bye
I love this movie, so I rewatched it with my housemates. They really didn't care for it. I'm glad Mr. Video Gamedunkey reviewed it because this means I'm objectively correct now and legally the president
"Fun" fact: despite being an absolute artistic masterpiece this film ruined the director's career due to the sheer cost; he took out several loans and spent nearly 16 million francs building every single set in the entire film (and I mean _every_ set, including the _streets;_ there was no on-location filming at any point in the film). It performed badly at the box office on release and he was unable to pay back the loans, and lost _everything_ - his production company, the rights to his movies, and his own home.
Please Please Please for the love of all that is sacred and holy, bless us with more film recommendations! This was exactly what I have been looking for and is precisely my cup of wine. Thank you. This was an absolute gem!
Man, I absolutely love it when the dunk just shares a piece of media he's genuinely passionate about. I love it when he's memeing through his teeth, but something about the more direct and analytical videos makes me want to write reviews like that.
They hit home on so many of the futurist vibes that the movie almost looks like a window into a past we've all forgotten or something. Pretty neat actually. Its funny how some jokes go right over most peoples heads while others don't even appear as a joke anymore since the "futuristic" features are all now stuff we take for granted.
seriously, I thought this was a new movie coming out that was shot to look retro. I was so excited. lol I was thinking that this was amazing some genius was making a really fresh interesting movie about absurdity of life r something but totally going into the past blended with a strange modernism. well, its still amazing, its just that it was made in the 60's when they indeed had the weird strange modernism incorporated into styles and design but also the old (to us now) as it is the 1960's. lol
"If you show this movie to a thousand different people, they'll be zoned into a different corner of the action".... you might say there's truly something for everyone👌
Dunkey has referenced Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo” and more obscurely, Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” plus his pretty good review of Kubrick’s “The Shining” I’m pretty sure Dunkey knows a decent amount about film.
I don't understand why its surprising at all. Rubkey is a youtuber. All decent youtubers have to know about filmography, editing, writing, etc. plus, not only that, hes a game review channel so thats another arena of visual media with cutscenes, shots, narratives, and so on. Of course dunkey knows film. I bet most youtubers know film.
That's the beauty of Dunkey's videos. A lot of people here think he's just 24/7 "gamer" all day. They got confused when he would like the vile, evil "Last of Us 2", when it was actually a very ambitious and special game. Because he liked the story, while a lot of people were too angry to take it as what it was. Dunkey is a pretty smart guy, who likes a lot of different things. I think that's what makes life worth living. When you have multiple passions in the arts. Not just one medium or one style.
I hope dunkey feels free to do more videos like this, he’s always passionate about the things he’s interested in. It’s enticing, beautiful, and inviting
I think it's because he's really passionate that these videos come out as enticing and beautiful. However if he just kept doing these videos all the time they would feel less so to the viewer and less so to Dunk himself. Its the age old dilemma of the age we live in where when we find something we like we desire more of it to the point of excess until that thing you enjoyed now dulls one's pallette thus moving on to the next inevitable alleviator of boredom.
Favorite moment was at 5:03 when dunkey's VO got muffled when the door closed. Small but effective little editing moment that's very fitting with the topic
Awh man I forgot about that, at the start I thought I recognised it, then remembered that a lecturer showed us scenes from this cause the sound design for the time was excellent, with the ultra wide scenes it draws your attention to what you should be watching with auditory cues and all that jazz.
@@user-fe8gx3ie5v in dunktank, dunkey was talking about how it didnt do well in the box office and with how much money was spent on this movie, the director was unable to make another movie due to a huge loss of money
I scroll down into my suggested videos and see "Playtime". And I think, 'Wow, it's weird that RU-vid would suggest I rent a Jacques Tati movie out of nowhere." And then I scroll down more and I see that, in fact, legendary RU-vidr/Rap Artist videogamedunkey is reviewing said 1960's classic French comedy film. I now know that not only will I watch literally anything Dunkey makes, I'm excited by the idea that Dunkey might make a video about literally anything. I'd watch the man throw cooked vegetables at a wall and be happy the whole time. Got nothing but love and respect for this man.
Playtime was Tati's masterpiece, from his own opinion. Alas, he bet everything on it, including his own money. It was a financial disaster. Nobody understood the point of the movie. By the way, this movie was created for the big screen (like his previous ones). Tati hated movies on a television, and his nightmare would have been some people watching it on a smartphone...
I really wish I could watch Playtime in the original 70mm format in a big ass screen. It's one of the few movies where the large format makes total sense, so you can appreciate the gags in the small details. And I agree with you, I think it's Tati's absolute masterpiece.
Tati is brilliant, I'm really sad we never got to see what his own version of L'Illusionniste would have been like, because I love that film as is and would probably love it more given his treatment.
@@Filo127 There is a real experiential difference between a film held in your hand versus one projected on a very large widescreen wall that fills one's vision to the point of needing to turn one's head to see things on the sides, regardless of resolution.
@@Vasquez2701 Oh seriously? I actually bought Odyssey because of him too. It's cool how one excited person can make you enjoy the experience more than you would've without seeing their excitement
Having literally just watched the movie finally today, that bit of this video became even funnier since in-movie those doors are being marketed specifically on their sound-blocking quality and that they slam silently.
That was a better summary of Playtime than anything I could ever give. Please keep sharing niche stuff like this, because you're really good at boiling down a piece of media to it's essence so that people can gauge whether or not it's worth their time.
it's really cool to see a big channel like Dunkey's shine the spotlight on a piece of media that is about as far from the orbit of most of his audience as it can be. My Grandmother showed me Tati's films when I was a child and I have not even thought about them is many years, this makes me want to go back and check them out again
Criterion Collection did a lovely job restoring much of his catalog, if you don't want to shell out for their wonderful boxset of all his films I believe they might have them on HBOMAX as part of their licensing deal with Criterion, so I'd look for them there
When other GaMeRs are on that BF6 hypetrain, Dunky is slanging some obscure movie. Legit unsubbed from so many people in the last year because their content is literal marketing hype and repetitive trash, but Dunky is elevating his audience - what a guy. I love this journey.
You can only review so many video games until you realize they are all just not as good as Super Mario Brothers 2. Then you move onto French 60's comedy cinema because that is the only way to go up or feel anything anymore.
Just want to drop a kind word in for Mon Oncle, which is like the adorable, sweet sibling of Playtime. Some thematic overlap and made similarly, but also just so vibe-y and jazzy and funny. There's a scene in Mon Oncle that I think made me laugh harder than anything else I've seen in a film, but it literally can't be described.
I really love the quiet moments in the film where we're invited into the most private, personal moments of a person's life and the transparent, voyeuristic windows rob them of any semblance of intimacy. It's a movie about being a spectator. We don't know anyone nor would we would ever, like the countless people you walk past.
It brings me so much joy that Dunkey is turning on a whole new audience to this French masterpiece. Whenever Dunk moves out of his lane, it's a big win.
The algorithms are gonna have a helluva time keeping up with a million people hunting down a French film with English subs from what I guess is the 70s.
Dunkey: "If it's a sad movie you go oh it's so sad. If it's a happy movie you go oh I'm so glad. If it's an angry movie you go oh I'm so mad." And that's why dunkey is the best rapper in the world right now.
@@zynel413 You’re a fake dunkey fan. in the video “Professional” Rap Critic Reviews my Song, he says himself that he is not a rapper. You’re nitpicking and biased, I win bye bye
@FluxFlu Well if you’re a real dunkey fan, you would have known that the Rating every Rappers Game Collection video was before the critic on fantano’s review. It was implied that dunkey had a change of plans on who he thinks he is when it comes to music.
A man of many trades, but not a Johannes Factotum. I was being fancy. Johannes Factotum is Latin for Jack of all trades, which would have fitted better any ways.
you're probably joking, but when I think about it more, you aren't wrong; the whole film is a collection of strands coming together, stories connecting and interlocking
This really makes you feel like the dark souls of nitpicking and biased strand type big bean burritos with a USB steering wheel when he spells "more dunkey"
"It makes me sound old-fashioned, but I think I am an anarchist." -Jacques Tati Pirate the movie friends, Tati and almost everybody who worked on the film is dead, they're not getting compensated. You'll just be paying corporations for stuff that should be in the public domain.
@@krislynn5965 The mention of it being a strand type film at 1:13 is the secret one they wanted us all to see. The one at 3:12 they put in purposefully trick us in to thinking it's not a strand type film. It's multi-layered film making
@@JSmith19858 I mean, he tried to draw our attention to the blue folder so we wouldn’t see the strand. So it was a clever bait and switch. Truly a master craft of our time. A mastahpeece if you will.
I love the detail at 5:00 when Dunkey says confounding technology and the audio gets muffled when the guy closes the door. He really went as far as to replicate the beautiful subtleties from the movie into his review.
I adore this film, glad that you appreciated it too, Dunkey. The restaurant scene is just simply *chef's kiss* and such chaos never failed to make me laugh.
I remember watching this movie in film theory, really opened my eyes to the ingenuity and creativity that can be possible with practical illusions and framing. This is a movie that should be shown and discussed in sociology and psychology more than film theory.
I recently rewatched this movie with my dad and got so much more out of it. The scene were the melted model plane undroops when the AC gets fixed made my dad and I both laugh out loud. Very rewarding to watch with someone else so we can help each other find the Where’s-Waldo-y sight gags. Thanks for the recommendation, Dunkey!
Don't give Kojima ideas lmao. I'd actually play a game made in this style made by him. Well, so far the closest one I can think of is Playdead's INSIDE.
So I went and watched this after this video and it totally lived up to expectations. Thankyou for bringing this to your audience, it was a wonderfull film!
What you don't realize is that Dunkey makes these non-videogame videos so rarely because he is acutely aware that he will effortlessly overshadow any and all creators in that field, and single-handedly cause the unemployment rate of RU-vidrs to skyrocket.
Dunkey is hands down my favorite youtuber because he still embodies the actual spirit of young youtube, just doing whatever you want. i feel like so many people gear their content towards what they think the algorithm will promote or what they think their fans want. dunkey keeps it authentic by doing stuff he thinks is funny or making videos for things he enjoys and i really like that about him. if he ever sees this, i want him to know we see that, and we appreciate that. we love you for you dunkey. don't ever change
You nailed it. There are very few genuine RU-vidrs left these days, but Dunkey is absolutely the best example we have left of the old school RU-vid that's long since gone extinct.
Thank you for actually recognizing that the movie is meant to be fun. I've heard many people use the cliched "it's a stark prophecy for where society is heading" in critiques, but it's not supposed to be bleak or dystopian in the slightest. It is meant to convey hectic confusion over changing technological advances, but Jacques Tati is more fascinated and enamored by it than worried. It's called "Playtime" for a reason
I love when dunkey reviews movies because it’s such an in-depth review. I go back to your Shining video all the time just because the review is done with such love. 10/10 review, there’s a little something for everyone.
I imagine for some scenes the director could tell some the extras “just do whatever the hell you want and pretend your trying not to draw attention to yourself but your failing miserably”
I bought the Jacques Tati Criterion box set, I’ve never seen any of his his movies. That’s $66. I just watched Playtime. And now I’m going to watch every other movie in the set. Thanks for exposing me to this film.
A masterpiece. Did a college presentation on this film, I was happy to see people in my class laughing at Tati’s work. Pierre Etaix is probably my favorite French comedian though, Yo-yo is just amazing
Man I love all of dunkey's insights. Whenever he makes a video like this it just makes me feel as if I have just gotten a lecture, but that I actually found fascinating and makes me yearning for more. Deconstructing a piece of art in such a maniacal manner is art in itself.
ahhh yes this 1960s french film. i remember watching this and thinkin “when will dunkey make a video about this?” finally it’s been done. thank you dunkle lmao
I love the fact that this community allows Dunkey to exercise his creative license. It's clear a lot of passion and effort went into this review. Great job, Dunk.
work in a kitchen and this is crushingly true. people just stand up front and talk, or be in the back on their phone and then bitch that they are getting out late cause they are taking forever doing their shit. meanwhile I'm busy at all times while everyone else bitches that the day is going so slow cause they aint doin shit!
they actually do something similar in the movie when the glass door breaks. when the guy pulls on the handle in the other guys hand to open the nonexistent door the music inside gets louder and then quieter again when it's "closed".
I love how dunkey really appreciates art in different forms and his way of expressing his opinions resonate so well with so many people Also, he gave it a 4/5 even though the movie does not have Donkey Kong. Truly an unbiased critic
"Employees stand idle with nothing to do while others do the work of 10 people" So, my workplace represents comedy? Should have known this all along...
@David Hall "Do you believe it's impossible for certain demographics to succeed without a helping hand? Why is that?" Look up acculturation vs enculturation then come back
Yeah he doesn’t realize it’s more criticizing capitalism rather than “industrialization.” You can have industry without worker abuse and inefficiency and you can have worker abuse without industrialization, look at ancient slavery. The actual critique is more of modern day capitalism.
