I always refused to believe in god or something and came here by accident.. but I'm feeling so touched and overwhelmed and got so much hope out of nowhere! I even started crying out of joy that god and jesus loves me and that theres hope. I'm gonna start reading the bible tonight.

This was a very refreshing and much needed explanation. I'm in a very dark place right now due to my wife of 7.5 years passing from pancreatic cancer on Dec 2nd, 2021. I've been feeling so lost, sad, angry, tired, questioning everything. I feel so weak without her strength. Our two 9 yo twin girls are the only thing keeping me going. I know God is with me but the pain is unbearable. It's so hard to except there was a "reason", and I keep pushing him away. I don't know what to do.

In my 33 years, my catholic school education, my repeated attempts at different churches no one has ever been able to explain to me how Jesus’s death was supposed to save me. I always understood it as a great sacrifice but failed to grasp the concept that as a sacrificial lamb he was bringing heaven and earth together.

-Keep on being truthful and faithful to the Lord, seek understanding and knowledge of the word of God. Be strong, have compassion and intimacy with the Lord. -God is with you, you do not have to fear. Pray, read your bible and let him work, he will never leave you, obey his words and talk to him. Seek Christ, seek the truth. Flee from sin and truly try. Jesus loves you.

I've been a Pastor for four decades, gone to Bible College and Seminary. This has made everything I've struggled with make perfect sense to me. I've been following Bible Project for quite awhile now and have been binging through quite a number of their videos and really adoring their attention to detail in the animations. However, at the start of the video, I could definitely feel that stubborn flesh wanting to rise up and start questioning where this was going before it even really started. I'm really glad I kept myself humble and didn't listen to it because this was a very interesting take on things that people have tried to understand for thousands of years! I'm not going to say that everything in this is 100% truth, but it's certainly something worth praying about!

Did I miss something? Because there is a hell/Sheol, and It’s mentioned though out the Bible. I agree there’s the hell living inside us that needs to be purified, but Satan and his angels will be in hell, and so will we if we don’t repent.

You can hear the emotion in this guys voice when he speaks about Jesus and GOD. It’s nice to hear the love and belief in Jesus and The Creator in others.

If God lives in your heart and all your nightmarish decision feelings thoughts are in your head...it's simple Heaven is in your heart and hell is in your head... Cause when Jesus straightened my path and aligned my heart with Him and my life, I finally experienced Heaven on earth everyday.

After watching the whole video, he just came full circle. He has no quarrel with the heaven/hell dilemma whatsoever. In fact he acknowledges it in the end that's what will happen. He's just focusing on the plan of Salvation. One thing though: our actions do not morph the world into hell. They make it quite miserable, but it is not hell yet. Why? Because God is still here, like a timely cloud on a really hot and bright day. Hell is the total and complete eternal abscense of God. We choose to go there with our actions. Period. God is still here. Mercy is still at hand. Love can still be felt. Let's bring that forth. We have 10 commandments. Let's aim the best we can. That's all Jesus asks of us. Because the alternative is an eternity without him. Darkness. Emptiness.

I was with him until he started talking about Hell. Hell is an actual location that God created for Satan and demons. Speaks about it in Book of Enoch and revelations. People can go to hell for not accepting Christ but accepting Satan's plan instead

I like the sentence, "Jesus wants to get "the hell" out of us." Another one is, "Hell is the monument to human dignity."

I understand the Gospel is all about restoring our relationship with God, which got lost in the Eden garden. God loves the man kind so much that gave himself so everyone that believes in him don't get condemned but have eternal life.

I greatly appreciate that the desire of this video is to give a fresh perspective of God's plan which may more readily resonate with the audience, and I am grateful for that. Without intending to be captious in the least, I must point out that it is essential to note that hell is not sin, and sin in not hell. The two are not the same, and that's quite important. This video, however, could lead some to equate sin with hell, and in doing so creates a false equivalency which does not exist in scripture. While James 3:6 indeed implies that hell (Gehanna) is the root source - that the power which drives sin is indeed demonic in nature, that's not the same as saying that sin is hell and hell is sin. Hell is not sin, but rather the punishment for it. Yes, sin defiles humanity and causes suffering on earth, and while sin could certainly be equated with evil, it cannot be equated with hell. Why is this detail so important? The reason it's so important to keep the concepts of hell and sin in their proper Biblical place, is because confusing the two can lead to a host of erroneous conclusions which could potentially be more serious - like erasing the reality of hell by unintentionally promoting the idea that there is no such thing as a literal place of eternal suffering, and accepting other false equivalencies. This is not a trivial concern, as even some of the comments below make it clear that some have already taken this video to mean that the only "hell" is here on earth. Sin is not hell, but unforgiven sin will result in hell; which is why we need Jesus. I would only caution that while we make every effort to undo society's misunderstandings about the Bible, we need to take great care in how we go about it, lest in our zeal to make the Bible more understandable, we accidentally throw out the baby with the bathwater. I just saw your video and it makes perfect since. I have lived on this planet 67 years and I have seen hell on earth. The hell caused by selfishness and lusts. I heard the gospel 44 years ago and repented and believed in the work Jesus did to save me. I wish I could say there was no hell left in me. But there was a shift after I ask Jesus to save me. I realized that sin was making me and others miserable and I have run from anything that might look like sin. You know bars and drinking and well so many things that can easily beset us. He is correct about what average people think of christianity. However, I'm afraid he got a few fundamentals wrong. Doctrine of Salvation vs doctrine of Sanctification. He explained that Jesus' main purpose is to teach humans how to have a good life here on earth accomplished by obeying God's law and Jesus' teachings summarized in Matthew 22:36-40 as "Love God and love your neighbor". The concept of obeying God's law is defined in the bible as Sanctification, which indeed is a crucial part of christianity. However, the video fails to point out that the main purpose of God's plan is Salvation. Salvation and Sanctification are two biblical concepts often misunderstood by God's people and therefore by non-christians as well. The bible is very clear in the order in which these two occur. Step 1 is Salvation, step 2 is Sanctification. It cannot be altered/exchanged. Therefore, humans can NOT live in Sanctification (obey God's law) unless God saves them first (Salvation). Paul explains why by describing the fallen human condition (prior to Salvation) in Romans 3:11-18 and Ephesians 2:1-3, see below: Romans 3:11-18 “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” 14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and misery mark their ways, 17 and the way of peace they do not know.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Ephesians 2:1-3 1"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath". That being said, only when God saves a soul (Salvation) it's now capable of obeying God's law here on earth (Sanctification), although not perfectly obedient because Sanctification is progressive. As we grow and mature as Christians we face temptation and often fall (James 1:13-15). If we sin, we are called to confess our sins, because he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) Now, Salvation is described throughout the bible multiple times. Here are some examples: Ephesians 2:4-10 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." In Ephesians 2:9-10, Paul clarifies the tension between Salvation and Sanctification by saying God does not save his people by their works (lifestyle), but those he saves, are saved to do good works (live in sanctification, obey God's law, love God and our neighbors etc). Ezequiel 36:25-32 provides a more detailed description of what Paul teaches in Ephesians 2 regarding God saving his people, Ezequiel uses figurative language understood by the israelites back then: "25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel! The key verse to sum up the order of 1-Salvation --> 2-Sanctification is Ezequiel 36:27. "I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." God's plan is Salvation (John 3:16). The bible describes it also as eternal life, redemption, justification and regeneration. God knows unsaved souls cannot obey his law. He also knows those he saves receive the Holy Spirit indwelling in them and empowering them to obey his law (Sanctification) See John 14:15-17: 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever- 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. God's purpose for his people is Salvation (eternal life/redemption/regeneration/justification) because He knows those he saves receive the Holy Spirit. Once the Holy Spirit is at work He will guide believers in sanctification. Progressive/continuous sanctification is a process that describes how christians (real ones) grow and mature in Christ likeness guided by the Helper, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. It is described by theologians as "progressive/continuous" sanctification because while on earth, no one can live a perfectly saintful life obeying God's law 100%. The bible teaches that, in order to live in sanctification, christians (real ones) grow little by little empowered by the Holy Spirit whom God the Father gives to those he saves. In Philippians 1:6 Paul teaches God's plan of 1-Salvation---> 2-Sanctification: Philippians 1:6 "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you* will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ**". *That who began the good work in you = God began it all by saving us **will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ = God will complete what he began In conclusion, the bible teaches God's plan and the order in which it occurs. Step 1 is Salvation, step 2 is Sanctification. It cannot be altered/exchanged. Humans can NOT live in Sanctification (obey God's law) unless God saves them first (Salvation). It is impossible to understand and accept the"good news" until the "bad news" has been understood and accepted. Paul understood and preached this in Acts 17.

Wow, I’m absolutely speechless... Jesus has been calling on me lately and so long I have rejected him or ignored him, but all he wants to do is help me. He sacrificed himself knowing I would a few chances to get it right, to release all the anger, selfishness, and toxic traits that I have been wanting to get rid of already. All I needed to do is turn to him this whole time and just let him do what he promised he would do. I have been trying all my life to do what only he can do and I just look back like why didn’t I just let him in. Oh god please forgive me! I’m ready to accept you and your love. The problem with what Mackie says about hell is that it is out of context and simply not true. Hell is not sin, Hell is a place of eternal fire away from God’s presence forever: “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41 ESV) Hell is not on earth, but is a spiritual place for spiritually dead souls, and God places you there because of your rebellion: “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28 ESV) While there will be a new creation, earth as we know it will pass away, but Hell is a place where those who reject God receive the recompense that Christ himself brings, namely, an eternity of continue torment: “And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”” (Revelation 14:11 ESV) “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:12-13 ESV) God will send you to hell if you reject his salvation. No-one can stand in the presence of God and live who has not been forgiven in Christ.

"Shut the hell up" and "get the hell out of here" just took on a whole new meaning for me 😳 Despite being raised catholic I never fully dove in The Word. Recently God has shown me the way back to Him, and so I haven't read the Book of James, and only learned about it from this video. I gave been reading the Bible much more recently, and am excited to learn much more about our Lord. I have been missing out big time

As an atheist/humanist I think this is a brilliant explanation that makes me appreciate Christianity more. We’re all in this (i.e., the human condition) together and only through channeling love and compassion, wherever you choose it to come from, can we achieve our common goal of heaven on earth.

I like the video, and I like Tim's overall point. However, I have to disagree in one major aspect, and that is the point that he makes starting in 17:53: "Hell...is something that _humans_ have created." Tim is correct in stating that James 3:6 does not use "hell" to explicitly refer to a place; James 3:6 employed metonymy: Just like we would say "Washington" as a shorthand for "the government of the United States of America", James used "hell" as a shorthand for "the powers of evil". However, while Tim is correct in that *sin* (which he associates with hell), and thus *corruption*, entered the world through man's Fall, hell is not just a word for the corruptions brought to earth via man's sin. The Bible is clear that it is an actual place where the wicked are punished (see, e.g., Matthew 23:33; Mark 9:43-48). And it was not made by man; it was prepared by God for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). All that having been said, though, I agree with the rest of what is being said here. As the video that played from 10:16 - 16:14 correctly put it, the story of the Gospel is the story of Jesus coming to remove sin from the earth and of God reuniting Heaven with Earth; it is not a story of "do good and you'll go to Heaven; do evil and you'll go to Hell". And I do not think that Tim is denying the doctrine of hell; Tim admits (starting at 26:25) that there must be a literal place where those who choose not to believe in God get separated from God, lest evil mar the new creation. However, I think that in trying to make way for the turns of phrase that Jesus wants to "get the Hell out of the earth" and "get the Hell out of you", Tim inadvertently made a doctrinal error, and we Christians should be wary of allowing someone to commit error in service of a greater truth. TL;DR: I agree that the story of the Gospel is *not* me-centered but God-centered, and that the story that Jesus came to remove sin from the earth and prepare for the merger of Heaven and Earth is more compelling than a narrative of "Do good and go to heaven; do evil and go to hell". However, one must be careful not to base the truth on a lie. Hell is more than just a shorthand for the powers of evil; hell is a real place.

This conversation approaches the topic of sanctification of the saints, those who lived with us wearing his untarnished robes, a call to be born again from heaven. But without all the parts integrated together properly, it also approaches the topic of a type who stands as Christ, but wants the world.

Again and Again, Jesus said that in Hell, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. So Hell is a real place, a place of suffering, and not just some place outside the city.
