Please Help in Identifying Chiffchaff Variant Songs

Can anyone please help with any information about the two variant songs I have recently recorded of the chiffchaff singing? I know that the normal chiffchaff song is often made up of an irregular pattern of ‘chiffs’ and ‘chaffs’ but these variants are very different notes that are produced in the intervals between the normal bouts of singing. They are much quieter; perhaps that is why I have never noticed them before and they could also easily be mistaken for bird vocalisations.
0:00 - Introduction
0:20 - Chapter 1 - Variable pattern song
0:49 - Chapter 2 - Regular pattern song
1:17 - Chapter 3 - Variant 1
2:21 - Chapter 4 - Variant 2

Fascinating Maurice, I don't know whether you are a subscriber to my channel or not but I did recently post a video about Buzz Pollination in which I used Audacity's spectrogram display function to illustrate the frequency difference between normal flight "buzz" and "sonication buzz". I also posted a Facebook exclusive video on my Naturally Curious UK FB page about the song of the Willow Warbler, where I again used spectrogram to illustrate the descending cadence in the song. As far as your Chiffchaff recordings are concerned I'm afraid I can't shed any light. I would definitely recommend you do a search on the xeno-canto website and see whether anyone else has documented these sort of variants. Well done for observing and recording this. Give yourself a "Naturally Curious UK" gold star! 👍😎👍 ⭐

Thanks for your interesting comments, yes I am a subscriber to your channel. I have seen reference to willow warblers copying other birds songs but nothing about chiffchaffs doing so. Best wishes Maurice

Love this! Sorry I can't help but I'm sure I once heard one using 4 descending notes in its 'chiffchaff' song!

Hi Maurice, I think the songs are maybe like this because when the birds where very young in the nest ,a different type of bird nearby, maybe a reed warbler , sang constantly and the young birds have pick up on this and now they sing a mixture of both songs ? Best Regards, Tim

Interesting . I don't know , but instinctively , chapter 4 sounds like a young bird ... Do they have to learn to sing like the adults ? . Surely they aren't perfect singers to start with .?

I can't help you there I'm afraid, I'm a fascinated novice at this. I have got a similar but more convoluted question though, if anyone likes solving these sorts of things. I live in Harrogate, Yorks. and there's a bird who sings a perfect little musical phrase. It's my suspicion that Brandon Flowers half-inched it for about a minute into his song All these things that I've done with The Killers. But what's the bird? I'll leave a link to it for any Sherlocks. Seriously I'd love to know.
