When you showed closeup I noticed how all the stages of the painting appear in different areas especially the burnt sienna which seems to be a characteristic element to all your paintings ...your dialogue is so easy to understand...so helpful!
Thanks Nancy! I like leaving hints of the process in the finished painting. I feel like it adds character and energy. I'm so glad you found this video helpful!
I think I'll be ok if I turn the canvas so that it's inline with the wind. It's windy almost every day so I'm going to have to learn to deal with it! 😂
Michael, I’m not only simply learning from your videos (you explain everything so well) but find them so relaxing as well as seeing the California coastline, as I’ve never been there! Thanks so much and keep up the good work👍🏻👏. 🖼
I hear you on the versatility of the canvas for transporting and such and I do use canvases in the studio for my larger paintings. But there is just something I love about working on the smooth surface of Masonite! 😊 Anyway, nice to see you out painting and in a beautiful spot.
I still love masonite for smaller panels. I find there's a focus and clarity that is difficult to achieve with canvas. When painting large, 24x30 and larger, I actually prefer the look of canvas over panel!
Nice to see you going larger on canvas . Can really see the depth and drama of shapes . (I was at hobby lobby recently and they sell all sizes of canvas packs really inexpensively). Take care!
@@chamberlainpaintings I’ve tried the blick variety I’d say their comparable in quality at least on the lower end types , but the 4 packs I saw at HL were outstanding value to say the least. Much better price point than blick .
Great painting Michael. How about attaching a 3mm MDF board to the rear of the canvas to prevent light shining through it...just remove it afterwards then you're not at the mercy of the sun!
Nice job as always! I recently started oil painting myself, and it is a bit tricky but I always try to improve :) Thank you for inspiring me to go into oil painting!
You've gone to bigger canvases, Michael, and doing well with the added paint!! I went to larger canvases and have really struggled with covering them and keeping them looking fresh...any suggestions would be immensely appreciated.!
I really sped up my block in. No wasting time. You have to be aggressive and don't worry if it's slightly off. Just go for it. You're going to be making adjustments anyway so just cover that canvas!!
Using a canvas and painting large at Pigeon With Tad and his paints, more than a smidgen Simple shapes, lots of sky like Monet A timer makes him leave halfway Michael captures wave activity and distant hills Dramatic value shifts, light on rocks gives chills Join Patreon, creativity will transcend Loved this and the ocean at the end 🌊 *WOW* you both produced beautiful paintings. I can see why you want to go larger after you put this size beside the smaller one. This really makes an impact. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Great paintings, guys! I mean, sir, you painted that water so well. The energy and movement of the water is incredible, as well as the rest of of it. Perfect! Beautiful location, btw. Have a good one!
Nice, I’ve been wanting to go larger but was struggling with the transport of the panel. I think I’ll try the large canvas. I gotta find a way to keep the sun from coming through cuz that’ll drive me batty.
You could back the canvas with cardboard to block the illumination. It didn't really bother me. I didn't even notice it once the scrub in was finished.
Very nice color harmony on this one. I'm gonna try plein air this spring but I'm concerned about the packing up process after the session is finished. Can you film that part in a following video? I know if I'm not careful everything may end up with paint on them, I'm a bit clumsy. Thank you.
Instead of buying panel carriers for my bigger projects I just clip two panels or two canvases, faces in, together, with some cork in between them. They make clips for just that purpose.
Michael Heard your comment that achieving the orange tone underpainting coming through was more difficult with a panel . Curious why. Is it because canvas absorbs more color?
Nice! I wonder - could you tape a windshield sun shade to the back while you work? Then you could see your subject easier without having to turn it so the sun doesn’t shine thru?
Very informative, Michael. Your practical knowledge is so vast for plein air and so appreciated! Do you ever paint with individuals in wheelchairs? I’m curious about the set up as I’m in a wheelchair when outside. I’m trying to decide on a palette. I was thinking U.Go because they open up flatly and are very portable.
I've painted in a seated position when I had a leg injury. I used my tripod easel instead of the one used in this video. I lowered it down so that my palette box was just above my lap. Sounds like the U.Go could work!
I just tried painting in Hawaii (just small gouache sketches) and the mountains in the distance had so much haze from the high heat and humidity, I really struggled getting the right value on them. It was like everything was glowing blue. Do you have any tips for getting that atmospheric perspective/distant haze? I’ve always used colors like cobalt and alizarin with gray to get it to push back but this was a whole new animal. Maybe I can take you to Hawaii so we can discuss it in person!😂😂💙
The problem I've had with distant hills has been painting them too dark. I have to remind myself to paint them lighter in value. Sometimes I'll lighten them up and they're still too dark when I get the painting home! As for color, some sort of blue or gray blue mixture push them back. Painting in Hawaii sounds so nice!
Ahora el nuevo producto que se llama licuin es bueno para sustituir el antiguo aceite de linaza, para la pintura óleo, y hace que la pintura óleo seque tan rápido como la pintura acrílica. Genial 👍
Painting looks great as usual. Will you be doing more city scapes soon? Will your upcoming show include some city scapes too? Thanks for another informative, entertaining video.
Waiting patiently for the weather to cooperate here in Idaho...many beautiful vistas awaiting my arrival...thanks for the motivation! Again a fantastic video chock full of valuable information put forth in an easy to understand way....

-( michael , the transparent shadows on the cliff you spoke of , accompany , surrounded , by flesh tone in the stone, of that which I can say look to sand with sea, where they touch in shadowed stone, past the first ripple of white water , a little further follow edge of the cliff base , where the descending stone caresses white water of the sea, the platinum etched as if on a mirror , the face of the ocean queen looks straight towards you , her full countenance is there )- 🤍
