inspiring, one of my favorite locations in the world. also, great quote: "as long as you keep the value of those shapes intact, it almost doesn't matter what you do within those shapes" that relates to other art forms as well, e.g. music

With a focus on big shapes - the magic begins There were plants and birds and -rocks- ducks and things Squinting for big shapes then specific; dark to light Steps back to make sure he keeps the values right Joining Patreon is the benefit- creativity expands (Maybe) I’ll give up the booze and the one night stands 😂 This is a very cool video to watch. I liked hearing the interaction with the passers-by along with your detailed process. You have so much going on when you paint! Recording, talking, explaining…Whew. Concerning using pre-gessoed canvases, I have found it helpful to lightly sand the surface, apply a coat of gesso, and then lightly sand again. I do trust Blick products, but find the canvas to be easier to use when I give it this treatment. I started doing this after watching another RU-vid video several years ago (wish I could remember the artist’s name!) and following his advice. Doing the extra coat of gesso and lightly sanding makes the canvas just feel less likely to fight with my brush.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
As I mentioned I’m the video, this canvas was actually very nice to paint on. I’ve applied another coat of gesso to inexpensive panels and found it made the surface much nicer to paint on

An interesting thing about reflections in water. Things like sky holes don't correspond exactly to what you are seeing through the trees. Because of perspective they sometimes take on a different shape or lie in a different spot from where you think they should be. That is to say, while it is a reflection, it's not a mirror image. Beautiful piece Michael. Amazing just how colourful a predominantly green painting can be.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
Thanks Matthew! I often have to fix the sky holes or reflections later to get them to line up better. I noticed that it this painting. I like to work quickly so there are often details that get overlooked in the heat of the process. Yes, lots of green out there! Glad you like.

To my surprise this canvas was really nice to paint on. I'm not sure why I had trouble with them in the past. Maybe I was using smaller brushes or something. Anyway, I know a lot of people who doctor up their store bought canvases. You've gotta have a surface that works for you!

@claygreen4723 2 года назад
Love the folks talking to you. I hear lots of painters mention how they want the darks and shadows to be transparent and am curious why that's so. Is it to help the toning color affect the finished work or to help give it some 3D effect with depth?
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
Keeping the darks transparent helps create depth and keeps them luminous.

Is there something else I can use to tone other than minerales spirits? Something non toxic that gives the same effect?
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
You could pre tone with acrylic paint. Lots of painters do that. You can start painting over it with oils as soon as it's dry. Artist grade mineral spirits like Gamsol is considered safe to use. Especially outdoors. Check the Gamblin website for some valuable safety info.
@michaelbuchanan3212

I want to thank you for your videos. I've a question, but which is opposite of your comment on looseness. What if you want to tighten up and try and focus more on realism and stay expressionistic, but push towards realism more. My colors are enjoyable, but a bit more saturated towards expressionism. Thank you.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
The process is the same. If you want more detail, you just take the process further. Start with big shapes and keep refining until you have a level of detail you're happy with. As for color, find the most saturated color in the scene you're painting. Mix the color as accurately as possible and then judge and mix the surrounding colors using the most saturated as a "key". Hope that helps!
