Yes and it's pretty sensitive. As soon as it moves it lights up.

@@Subasically Only for normal content cuz it’s a better remote. Otherwise, the Shield plays all formats unlike Apple TV

yap the lights are very nice, its light when detecting move to just lights on in touch, your choice. you also can program the upper right button to one press triple and hold press do to basiclly whatever you want like mute, specific app and etc..

@@carvitup keep your eye out in 2021 because if you look at the history of how they have released the shield this year would appear to be the next year A new one will be coming. So far they released it in 2015, updated in 2017, updated it with new versions again in 2019. Every other year seems to be the release schedule so I wouldn't doubt if we get yet a new version later this year in 2021. If we do I'm very curious what it might actually include. Will it be hardware updated? Will it be a repackaging of the same exact device with slightly better software features like they did in 2019? Time will tell.

@@TorrentFiend10 yeah when I originally saw this video pop up I got so excited thinking the 2021 version was releasing. I think this is hardware similar to the nintendo switch and I am guessing it won’t make sense for nvidia to release a new one till the switch has an upgrade but we’ll see.

@@carvitup the hardware is not similar to the Nintendo switch. It is the exact same tegra x1 chip used in The shield that they use on the switch as well. I believe it came out first on the shield and they just kept using it with the switch when it came out a little bit later but they both use the same tegra x1 chip. Of course the tegra x1 is the 256 core monster GPU that the shield has which makes it great for the switch also.

Definitely. There's only so much it can do with 480p SD content, but 720p material looks as good as a Blu-ray source on my 4K TV.

Admittedly I haven't tried the Native Plex app in a while, but I was unable to get TruHD Atmos to passthrough from the Plex app. Plex for Kodi will pass it through no problem, but the Plex app transcodes it.

@@light-master as far as I know the Plex app has always passed through sound on both the 2017 and 2019 version.

@@light-masterI had the same issue initially. Ironically you need to turn off all the codecs in the shield audio options and then it passes everything.

@@light-master I don't need any pass through audio, but i have some sd h264 files the official client won't direct play, and it also won't direct play certain subtitles. Plex add-on for Kodi so far direct plays everything that official client will not.

@@ecchimo that's just not true, passthrough works fine without any setting changes with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos working without any issues...

Synology NAS is great for $600. But use Seagate drives. WD is hot garbage.

I can confirm that the Shield Pro 2019 supports PGS and SRT natively. No need to transcode.

Does it support video/audio playback directly via usb drive connected to the shield?

I was wondering about that. Activating embedded .ASS subtitles will actually cause Plex to crash on mine.

Maybe the Plex needs to be plugged in for the remote to be aware of it, I love the light when picking it up. :)

@Xaphan Vassago I've done my research, I have both Media Player Classic and MadVR installed in my HTPC. For stuff like 720p and 1080p anime, I prefer the look of the Shield TV's upscaling. Also there is something to be said about simplicity. I don't have to use a specific player, I can just browse my Plex library, or Netflix, or RU-vid and get great (IMO) upscaling. You can tell me it's terrible all you want, but on my LG AU810 and 125“ screen, it's beautiful.

@@bnr32jason is the upscaling that good? I've researched a bit and find people complain about it specifically for anime. It's the only reason I haven't gotten a 4k tv yet because I'm worried about terrible upscaling, and 80% of the content on my plex server is 1080p x265 anime.

@@Glitch-zn4qr I wish I could give you a definitive answer of "yes it's absolutely great!" But it's entirely subjective. I have my Shield Pro connected to a LG AU810PB 4k projector with a 120" screen that I'm usually sitting about 8ft away from. In my opinion, the AI upscaling set to medium sharpens 1080p anime just enough to be an improvement without introducing an entirely artificial look to it. Most of the anime I watch is 1080p as well, but I watch quite a bit of old 480p stuff like Initial D as well. I think the only thing that gets a little weird is the text in the anime. Not talking about subtitles (I'm fluent so I don't use them normally) but actual text written in the anime itself, it can look a little oversharpened. Everything else like character faces and environments get noticeably sharper, but this may not be desirable to everyone. I prefer the slightly sharpened look vs the softer look, but I'm also on a 120" screen, so the softer look is likely amplified more for me.

You’re better off getting a Synology NAS for $600 or less and get bigger HDD than your Mac Mini will ever have. The SH-1 raid program allows you to buy more HDDs over a while vs all at once

@@markgarcia8253 you can always add storage to any system you have and the Mini can also be used for other things like video editing or whatever. The M1 chip has proven itself pretty power so far. I haven’t tried multiple transcodes yet but I would bet it probably can handle a bunch. I think a small drawback as of now is that the software for Plex isn’t built for the apple silicon yet and still has to run through Rosetta. But for so far it has done pretty well with no complaints. The mini isn’t as small as the simplyNuc and doesn’t have a tuner built in, but it also isn’t as expensive. And from the video above it seems like you can’t do much editing from the NUC. (If that’s your thing). The Mini is able to do editing all the way up to 8k footage without limiting too much performance. Maybe if all you want is a Plex server, the NAS could be a ok option. If you have a few people transcoding at the same time, I’m not sure how much it could handle before becoming an issue.

I don't know about plex, but the latest kodi supports VC-1.

All Shields will playback eac3 and even lossless audio...it’s a setting problem on your end. In the Plex settings on your shield, you need to set hdmi passthrough to on.
