In 69 i started my job in Chrysler engineering and my first day on the job was further development of the 440 6bbl. I had the best job in the world, do to my Honorable discharge.

I had a 70 Dodge Charger 500, 383 magnum , pistol grip 4 speed,3.91 gears but I always wanted a 69 Roadrunner but the insurance was cheaper on the Charger 500 the insurance company classified that model as a family car.. the insurance agent said as long as it's not an R/T Never quite understood that but I didn't argue about it. That was in 1972 I didn't have the foresight at that time to keep the car.

My mom was a Matron for the CHP in the 70's when I was in high school. I knew almost all the local Highway Patrolmen when I graduated in '75. At the time the CHP drove the Dodge Polara with the 440 "Police Package". In the late 70's I owned a '69 Roadrunner w/383 Magnum. At the time virtually NO cars could outrun the California Highway Patrol's Polara's. Special made by Dodge those 440's had an oversized radiator and beefy transmission with the 12-bolt Dana rear end (same as Roadrunner). The "spec's" that Dodge used in building the Police Package was that the car could run 100mph in 100 Degree weather for one hour without overheating. I was riding with a CHP Sergeant one day and he kicked it up to 135 miles per hour and it was only roaring along at 5,100 rpm. You would run your fuel tank dry before it would overheat at 135 mph. When I graduated the police academy (1979/80) my first patrol car was a '73 Satellite. I've been a "Mopar Guy" ever since...

1973 1/2 and newer Police Packages got the station wagon 9 1/4" rear, with station extra heavy duty rear springs. The 9 1/4" rear was bigger than the 8 3/4", but not quite as big as the 9 3/4" Dana 60, which would have reduced ground clearance. The 9 1/4" rear came out halfway into the 1973 model year. I saw them in Police Package cars through 1978, both B body and C body cars. They came in station wagons, taxi cabs and pick up trucks. The high performance cars through 1974 got the 8 3/4" rear end, except for 1973 and newer A body car, that got 8 1/4" rear ends.

My first car was a B5 70 Superbee. I still remember the vin number. Also owned a 70 RR, 68 Charger R/T, 70 plum crazy Challenger SE. 3 Darts and 3 Dusters. Back then we thought they would be around forever. I could retire on the money those card would bring in today's market. But if I had them I wouldn't sell them. Still love those Mopars at 61 years old

In 1970, the required safety and sound requirements, called for locking steering, shoulder belts, headrests and additional exhaust resonators. This caused some cheaper features to be made to keep the price down. A molded plastic dashboard and glove box door, a plastic grill and the standard 1970 transmission in the Roadrunner was a three speed manual. Those were to counter the additional costs of the required features. 1969 didn't have quite as much trim as 1968, but had more gear ratio options, a cold air induction option, bucket seat option in the 1969 Roadrunner and the 1969 383 4-speed got special rear springs all its own, to help traction. The Roadrunner was so popular, that there was a shortage of the plain rubber floor covering, so some Roadrunners got upgraded carpeting.

Under hood as new. Interior clean, no carpeting, rear shelf or dashpad. Ugly 68 new process bench 4 speed. # match trans, rear Dana, and 426 hemi. Mixed wheels, no caps. Steelies in a stack in trunk (right side). Mid 70s NY tags.....AU MINE . Paid $2500 in 78 winter, asked 50K in 2000 local, no one has ever looked at it. Still sits as no rush.
