Leavemea Lone funny how it's Alan Menken's idea to cut "If I never Knew You", saying how it's scarily too mature for the young audience (didn't test well with the demographic). I can envision that though. That scene had me bawling when I saw on RU-vid last year (finally!), but I probably wouldn't feel this much back in the day...or would I? :D
DouDou Eki- I know they said it didn't do well at test audiences because some kids found it 'boring' but i remember when I was younger watching the hut scene without the song and finding THAT boring. I don't even watch the blu ray version of this movie because I'd rather just watch the dvd special edition that has the song integrated into the movie.
Yes! This was always my favorite movie. I loved her spirit and she was the one that saved John! Back when princesses needed to be saved Pocahontas gave them all a middle finger. You can love a man without giving up who you are and what is right. I see it more clearly now as an adult that this movie was trying to empower! But this score... oh my goodness, this one and the hunchback always make me cry. They are so powerful and so moving!
Hahahahah youre right... Disney usually do happy Endings. As a kid i hate they didnt let John Smith and Pocahontas didnt live happily ever after. I was worried. But now i come to appreciate it😭😭😭😭
Sofia Nishimura Not just this movie...if you listen carefully at 1:34 you might just catch a snippet of a song from one of Menken's earlier Disney works in here.
Of all the songs in this movie, THIS is the best one IMO. No lyrics, nothing flashy. These 5 minutes tell the story so well of the starcrossed encounter of two people who ultimately had to say goodbye, but left each other all the stronger for having met. Simply beautiful.
Isn't it funny how music can do this to us? Here I am, a 17 year old attempting to be productive and tidy my room, and instead I'm sat here listening to this and bawling like a baby
Bewilderbeasts Im 23 and I believe I it was 15-18 years ago I've listened that song for the first time. It still makes me both happy and sad when i come back to listen it. I know Im going to sound just like all the othes out there, but seriously. Disney what happened!? Can you make a movie like that or Sleeping Beauty which is like 70years old by now and its still one of the best all time, or did all the old writers die of age and the new gen just doesnt have it. :/
The end of this is some of the most powerful music Menken has ever written. The buildup and force is incredible. I repeat the end over just hear it again. So I agree with the part from about 3:30 onward to 3:55 is fabulous build to the crescendo of the colors ending. It SO fits the movie at this point. It can make you7 see it vividly.
I know alot of people don't like Pocahontas, but Goddamn this is some of the best music Disney has ever released. Thank you Alan Menken, I hope Disney asks you to do another animated score in their current Renaissance.
Why they don't like it, tho? It's a masterpiece!!! The music is a masterpiece, but the damn animation, the characters, the story, the message is a fucking masterpiece, how can anyone not love it?
I think people dislike Disney's accuracy in the story's cultural representation, or how they dealt with themes about racism, bigotry. Some also don't like how it wasn't a happy ending. Personally, I think this is a beautiful film mostly because of the artistic aspect of it.
@@shreemuthpericherla5407 That's exaggeration. Nobody has ever said Pocahontas led to the downfall of 2D animation when in fact it was one of the most artistically created and beautiful animated film's in the entire 90s era of Disney. It was less successful only because The Lion King was released a year before and was a bigger success than anyone ever imagined - Pocahontas couldn't live up to that level. Plenty of 2D successful 2D films were made after Pocahontas like Tarzan and Mulan, and the absolutely fantastic Prince Of Egypt (although that was DreamWorks). Pocahontas DEFINITELY wasn't the reason 2D animation died out, the real reason was the change in the audience and development of computer animated technology (the success of Toy Story hinted clearly that the coming decade was going to have more of these films, nothing to do with Pocahontas though)
When I was younger I didn´t like this movie because she was the only one "princess" in Disney movies that didn´t end up with her love. Now I am older and Pocahontas is the most favourite movie for me because it shows us that life isn´t about happy endings... Everytime I cry even when I just imagine the part how she run through the trees.... AMAZING!!! ♥
Am I the only one that reenacts this entire ending scene (theme and all) as the pizza guy is leaving. I stand on the sidewalk and give them final epic farewell with the wave of my hand and a wave of leaves guides him on his way?
He has always done masterpieces, but I totally agree. The Huchback and Pocahontas his best works among all his wonderful works. And I honestly think they both are the best Disney movies ever
This, The King of Pride Rock, and the Finale to The Prince of Egypt, easily are the three most heart wrenching, beautifully written finales of all animated films.
I know this film's not perfect, but this is one of the best Disney endings EVER. Seriously, it's like the Anti-Ariel ending - Ariel just straight up drops her family, friends, her whole life, everything for this stupid bloke she hardly knows... but Pocahontas is mature enough to realise that she can't do that, however much she wants to be with John. I love that she makes that choice, and the music highlights the struggle she goes through as she makes it.
You know Ariel was manipulated into doing that, right? Besides, she was interested in the human world before she met eric. (as explained in part of your world) It's more like she left her family to become human. being with eric was just a nice bonus
Every time I see the part where she runs through the trees to wave goodbye, tears well up. I'll never understand people who don't like music like this. There is so much emotion in music, you just can't fight the feelings that they give you.
Even though Pocahontas wasn't historically accurate and In real life John smith was an asshole, this movie is still really beautiful and the ending always makes me cry
he didnt really have a huge connection with pocahantas in real life- and john rolf basically stole her when she was twelve from her tribe. pocahantas's movie is the least accurate thing ever
4:15 - 4:25 makes my whole heart move with the notes. the instrumental on what would be "you can own the earth and still, all you'll own is earth until" is so heavy, and moving through each note takes so much strength, if that makes any sense. Alan Menken is a genius composer and i love when he puts his heart out on his sleeve for moments like these
I cried my eyes out when pocahontas and john smith had to say goodbye to each other. my heart is still broken. i still cry everytime i watch this movie and the goodbye scene comes up.
As a child I wasn't a big fan of Pocahontas. To be honest, I think it was one of my least favourites. I rather watched Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast. As a child I loved only the ones with a "happy ending", the kind of endings where the prince ended up with the princess. I hated Pocahontas because of the goodbye. However as I've grown up I've seen the beauty in this movie that was invisible for my innocent soul. I've realised that the ending wasn't a goodbye but a letting go. There is a big difference as goodbye is an "I'll see you again when I'm ready to hold your hand and you're ready to hold mine" however a letting go is an "I'll miss your hand but I realized it was never mine to hold." I finally see the happy ending in this movie and that is that's it's always better to let go with a smile, than to hold on with tears.
+Katherine Yatsko At least the scores aren't. Maybe it's just the nostalgia talking, and the fact that we watched these films over and over as kids, but the instrumental soundtracks of the Disney Renaissance films were just so memorable and sweeping compared to those of their current films. The music that accompanies the Beast's transformation, Simba's ascent of Pride Rock, Pocahontas's farewell to John Smith, and Mulan's decision to cut her hair are so powerful. On the other hand, I couldn't identify an instrumental selection from "Frozen" if my life depended on it. Disney needs to get some strong composers working on their films again.
s not disney, is the music, the compositor....remember the amazing ost of tangled...it is like this old school...this was the best age of disney, and now are coming back!. but the music is the key! and alan menken is the god xD
+butternutcrunch I was literally about to say the same thing like the song when she realizes who she is, proudly proclaims "I AM MOANA" and determinedly dives back into the water to retrieve the stone is so emotional. I cried like a bitch because it was so emotional, I was so happy for and proud of her. 👌❤
I don't care what Nostalgia Critic said about this movie. I love it, and still do to this day. The music was always one my favorite parts about the movie. Especially this track, so much emotion and power.
At the end of the day all reviews are, are a person's thought about something. What one doesn't like one loves. There is nothing wrong with liking something one doesn't like or disliking what someone likes.
Me personally, I think its a tossup because while the original has superior animation/music, the sequel's story is just all around more interesting and develops the characters better. That it sticks to the historical material a little more closely doesn't hurt either. Would have been cool if they could take the elements from both and have combined them into one "great movie."
man from 3:40 on i started straight sobbing in my seat trying to keep quiet because i didnt expect that but i should have. disney always has the most beautiful soundtracks.
This part of the movie always made me cry, actually it still does even just listening to the theme and here I am an adult 28. I don't think we ever can grow out of our old Disney favorites or Disney movies period.
This is so so beautiful. Pocahontas is my favourite Disney movie. This scene is also so sad and the soundtrack is just stunning and so emotive. Cry every time
This movie takes me back to when life was so happy, it has such a perfect narrative and message throughout and I remember sitting in front of the vhs as a kid, putting in all the old Disney classics and I would watch them for hours on end, some of the most precious moments and peaceful times that I will never forget- Just had to learn the violin part for this
I don't ever think I'll stop loving Pocahontas. Watching her as a kid and even now I never get tired of it. Disney has the ability to touch your heart with magic which I think they are losing in their most recent films. When I was little I never knew why I always teared up at the end. Its just that moment when she stands by her father and slowly starts to walk...then she runs and stops on the cliff and waves goodbye...even though sad it really is a beautiful moment.
The year now is 2020. The world is engulfed in a global pandemic. Amidst all this, my grandmother died today while I was so far away with no way to go back to her. Farewell wan
I'm also part native american, I'm nor sure which tribe my paternal Grandpa is descended from, but my goodness the music in this movie is just very beautiful. ❤
My mind cannot comprehend the nostalgia and depth I feel every time I hear the songs and soundtracks of my childhood. We can only travel back in our hearts again and again.
I did not think this movie was the best in terms of the Renaissance era, but the score to the entire film is downright amazing. This track in particular gets me every time.
This makes me cry--with 3:07, how it starts building at 3:34, and especially the tune of Colors of the Wind at 3:55. I watched the movie for the first time recently and was wondering how everyone hated this--though it's incorrect, it has gorgeous music, along with a dramatic story and perfect animation.
So does anyone else listen to this and envision a reunion instead of a farewell? I am very familiar with the original scene from the movie, but I always picture watching and waiting for that special someone. Several times you think they you see them or think they've come at last and get excited only to realize it's not them. And just as you finally turn away in disappointment, the special someone comes around the corner and spots you waiting for them. To be sure, they whistle a tune that is known only between the two of you and sure enough, you recognize it, turn, and realize they're finally here! All that time spent aching and longing to see them rises then falls as you realize you finally can. A smile slowly grows across your face as you feel yourself walking towards them and they walk towards you. By now, the music has reached its glorious end as that long awaited embrace is finally yours and the rest is history.
I love the crescendo that happens as Pocahontas is running through the woods to say goodbye to John. It's so powerful, and it really transports you as if you're in the movie yourself, experiencing what Pocahontas is feeling, or perhaps what John is feeling. A beautiful ending to a beautiful movie
This music was in my head when I was saying my emotional goodbye to my close best friend who is Native American like Pocahontas. She stayed with me on holiday in England for two weeks which we had planned to do for years, we had the best time of our lives and felt strongly emotional when it was time for us to part ways at the airport where she was catching her flight. I said the words that Pocahontas says to John Smith "No matter what happens , I will always be with you forever."
So, during this Corona quarantine, I decided to go back to my childhood and rewatch some of the Disney movies. Man, some stuff really hit me, I mean, all of the movies, Pocahontas, Lion King, Tarzan, Prince of Egypt all have such a deeper meaning than I actually thought. I know they are cartoons, but adults should also watch them from time to time, just to help them remember they might not be walking the right path or have simply forgotten themselves.
This music will go perfectly for the endings of both Toy Story 3 and 4! The fact that both Woody and Pocahontas at the end had to make very difficult choices and sacrifices for the need of others and the choices of wanting to stay or go with the cost of saying farewell to their loved ones, is really powerful , heartrending and emotional.💫☁️ "So long partner..." "To infinity and beyond..."
I actually thought it would go well with the ending of the original “Pete’s Dragon” where after Pete is finally safe with a family who loves him, Elliott has to fly away to help another kid in trouble and they can never see each other again and the ending to “The Chronicles of Narnia 3” where Lucy and Edmund have grown up like their older siblings, Peter and Susan and can no longer return to the magical world they all first discovered through a wardrobe in the first movie. Whenever I watch the end of those movies, this score will come to mind.
I had this movie at about 6 years old and I remember the ending made me very sad lol. After rewatching the movie I realized how good of a movie I had. Still very sad ending 15 years later❤
I remember last summer when I was in California, and I stayed for a week. Then came the day when I had to go back😢. And I remember hearing the part at 3:30 - onward as I took a last look of the ocean. This song is so beautiful and captures powerful emotions of saying goodbye
Even this part of the movie made my mother, who finds it silly and childish that I still watch animated movies and get emotional, bawled like a baby. In fact, I caught her watching this on her own. HA.
I was singing along and started crying and I was like "what the fuck, why am I crying??" It's just so beautiful, the emotion in the songs, you can feel it
1:58 : that moment when nothing's left to delay the sorrow that is going to strike your heart at the thought the time has come to say goodbye. I'm heart-broken each time I listen to this beautiful track.
