This week I sew a fabric pocket tissue holder for those little travel size tissues that many of us carry in our purses or backpacks. It's a quick and easy project that is perfect for beginners. Use your scraps and sew up a few for gifts.

Thanks for this video! A few videos earlier in the Un-Tutorial playlist, while watching the zipper pouch video with the zipper in the middle of the side, I realized that I wanted to rewatch this tissue cover video. Just a few videos later, here it is! ❤️

I wanted to thank you for posting this project. Initially, I just made some for the grandkids to give to their teachers, bus driver, etc. this Christmas. Then remembered my doctor. I admire her so much for giving up her office practice to make house calls. She treats home-bound and hospice patients. I made 50 in two days for her to give out to her patients. She was thrilled with them. We have a senior assisted living center a mile from my house and my next project is seeing how many I can make for the residents there before Christmas. Circumstances prevented me from doing all the donation items I usually do each year, but this was something I could do for someone else and it felt great. Thank you.

How wonderful!! That is a very special doctor. Everyone needs tissues so these make a great gift. Your generosity will make so many people happy. It’s nice that they only take a little bit of fabric and thread. 🎄☃️❄️

I made about 75 of these a couple of years ago. 50 I took to Athena's Run, a fund raiser for gynecological cancers, as favors to be given to cancer survivors. Then I took the others to my favorite local restaurant as little Christmas gifts for the employees there. The major expense was the tissues which I bought in bulk on Amazon.

That Teddy fabric is so cute. I made some of these last year and I preferred the look of the boxed corners. Of course if I was making 50 or more like you I'd forego that part haha. I also have the sizes for the ones that open at the top. I can buy tissues in packs of 10 for £1 ($1.30) so not expensive :) Hope you have a nice weekend - I have lots of sewing time :) :)
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 лет назад
Lesley Gilbert That’s a really good price. I think they were $2.28 for an 8 pack here from Walmart. I love the little teddy bears. I have more so you’ll see them again. I think the boxes corners make them look like they came from a boutique.

@@rsislandcrafts I am so sorry have a question. If I wanted to use 2 different colors on top what would each size would be with an 1/2 seam allowance. Wanted to use black and pink for outside fabric. Thanks again.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 года назад
marie dun I’m sorry but I don’t remember the measurements and I’m in the middle of of something but I wanted to try and help. I think if you take the measurement I give you and cut that in half. Then each half would need the seam allowance added back in. Does that make sense? For instance, if the fabric is 10” square then you would cut each of your two fabrics 5.5” if you’re using a half inch seam allowance. I always recommend using scraps fabrics for your first try. Then if it works out you can go ahead and use your “good” fabrics. If it doesn’t work out then you haven’t “wasted” your good or favorite fabrics. I think if you play with It a little then you’ll find your magic numbers. Sometimes when I don’t want to do the math I’ll cut the fabrics larger than I think and then after I sew them together I cut the desired size. It wastes a little fabric on the first one but then you can get the proper measurements. 🤷‍♀️

Rsisland crafts. Love the tissue holder. If you was to sell them in a craft show what would you sell them for
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 лет назад
Pricing things is so hard. I usually see what everyone on Etsy is charging and go from there. I see many shops selling them for about $9 on Etsy but that feels high to me for a craft show. I think I would mark them for $5 or $6 and have a basket full of travel tissues so they can buy a pack if they wish. Maybe $1 for the tissues. If you’re using high end materials then go for a higher price. Shops on Etsy tend to charge a bit more because of all the fees involved. I haven’t done the calculations for how much the fabric I used would cost. I would figure that out first and then add on a bit for labor. Good luck!

I did do a video on the boxed corners for my Patrons over on Patreon. If you know how to box corners it’s done the same as any other boxes pouch. I believe I’ve shown how to box corners but I’m not sure which video or if I’m imagining It 😆

Wow, that black and leopard print was flat when she started - when she flipped it at the end was lavender polka dots! Love the videos, but don’t take this personal, you’re very talkative and I just want to get on with learning how to do the project. Please do not take offense, I enjoyed learning from you and want to continue learning more and more projects. 😊

You’re right. When It comes to crafting I love to talk. This video is four years old and while I’m still chatty I have reigned It in a bit. I like to give everyone options so that they can make the project their own. Thank you for the kind constructive criticism. I’ve always wanted my channel to feel like a group of friends sitting around the same table chatting while sewing. There’s plenty of quick short tutorials out there but not many where It feels like you’re hanging out with friends. Have a creative weekend.

I really like your tutorial. I also like your easy going approach with instructions. I just wish you weren’t so talkative. I had to fast forward through the chatter to get to the actual construction of the piece. Then fast forward again, then again... Annoying! On the more positive side, and after much frustration with the jibber jabber, I finished the tissue holder and it turned out great. So, thank you.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 лет назад
Thank you. I’m glad you were able to make a tissue holder even though you found my video a bit frustrating. I try to show that sewing doesn’t have to be stressful. I know my videos tend to be more chatty than a standard tutorial and that’s because I record my videos so they feel like we are in my craft room sewing together. If we were in person we would chat and share tips and tricks with each other. There are many tutorial style videos where you get just the basic information so you can make an item. When I was learning to sew I made mistakes. I still make mistakes. I like to show how you can avoid a mistake and how to fix a mistake if one happens. A little oops is not the end of a project. Mistakes can be fixed. Many times a new sewer needs a little extra instruction and to see things from a different angle. I want to help those new sewists feel that rush when they finish their first project and It actually turns out like the one in the tutorial they watched. The more experienced sewers like to feel like they have someone to sew along with and sometimes they might even learn a little trick or two. I’m very much aware that I just wrote a short novel when I could have simply said “thanks for watching my video”. I am who I am 🤷‍♀️.

RsIslandCrafts - Robin You’re probably right that if I were sitting in a sewing room I’d be chatting up a storm with you. In fact, I’d be quite happy to do just that with a cup of coffee and some laughs over a learning experience. It would be fun. I guess, as a beginner, I was trying to focus on the project and not the diversions. It’s a much different thing to view a tutorial as opposed to working together as friends. I get your point though. I’m a beginner so I was very focused. Apologies for critiquing in a negative light.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 лет назад
rockin' Robin No apologies needed. We all learn differently and we look for different things in our tutorials. I receive similar comments daily. It’s not a problem. Many of us would love to be able to get together with other crafty friends but It just doesn’t work for a variety of reasons. I’m no different so I’m just trying to fill that void for some people. Have a great week. P.S. If you ever have any questions or get stuck on a project feel free to ask for help. Many times someone else will pop into the comments with an answer before I get a chance to. I’ve made several videos to help answer a question for someone or because they couldn’t figure out how to make something.
