Ironic how the music named "Reincarnation" belongs to a character that will never come back 2023 Update: Hey she's in Lost Word actually (better than nothing I guess)

Mima was clearly the camerawoman the whole time. Who else would give the player such a good birds eye view of the madness unfolding?

I come from the future, in Touhou 179: Return of Elder Spirits, Mima is the Extra boss (it's actually just Mamizou disguised as her)

There was a time where a single danmaku was enough to level houses, a barrage to tear up a landscape and spells that could very well flatten the ground and the sky in one. Those days have passed and those of such a high magnitude of prowess and extraordinary power lie dormant in the shadows. Gensokyo at one time had beings that could level mountains in the blink of an eye, a different culture where respect was favored more than love. Acquaintances abundunt with friends being a rare commodity in the harsher lifestyle that once existed. Such was life in Gensokyo when crazy things went on an entirely new level, even chaotic events we can never comprehend. These times ended when the Spellcard System thought up by the most recent Hakurei Shrinemaiden was brought into the current world we now see Gensokyo today. Many of those who were ultimately powerful could be dealt with by the weaker and insignificant creatures who were once dwarfed. So much has changed during these few decades and many mysteries never to be answered, beings disappearing without a trace and an entire race driven underground. But there will come another time when all of the past will rise from the ashes, sparks will burst into flames and flames will spread into a wildfire. A revolution that will cause a massive ripple within Gensokyo's very infrastructure. Many would find this threatening and no soon as change begins, war shall ignite and darkness will reign across the skies across a peaceful illusionary world. And when the ghosts of the past rise, there will be one that will be at the helm of it all. The one who will return as a force truly to be reckoned with, a former denizen of Makai's hellish realm with all but potential evil intent. And her name... Her name... is... *Madam Mima.*

Don't worry, ZUN finally remembered Mima and Shinki thanks to Lost Word, so they are basically confirmed for Touhou 20.

Everyone wants Mima to come back, and I'm just sitting here, hoping for Yuuka to come back.. I mean, she was in Phantasmagoria of flower view as a playable character, and that was a windows game.

I actually wish characters like Mima and Shinki had a chance in making it in a Windows game. Also, this theme kinda doesn't sound like it belongs in a danmaku shooter imo. More like an RPG, but good regardless.

Mima's theme makes me rethink about everything, even if touhou has its jokes here and there. Her theme kinda reminds me that she is a very VERY important charecter in the 98 and windows series probably among those lines, But what surprises me the most is that her theme gives me the feeling of a saviour type or a theme only gods of Gensokyo should have I dont know why her theme makes me think that way, but i like it BTW is there gonna be another charecter that might have this type of feel to their theme? just asking

Here I sit, six years after this was posted. And no, the Mima speculation has not stopped. Hey, guys commenting on this in a few years in anticipation of Touhou 20, what makes you think that she's any more likely to return this time around than in the last fifteen games?

Legends say that the day Mima reappears in the Touhou franchise, the world will blip out of existence. Either that or Gensokyo will become real. Either those or I just ate too much cheese before night and met a really crazy old tramp pretending to be a philosopher.

One of the best pc98 songs, the part at 0:52 is kinda melancholic and then the chorus hits Also Mima will come back in touhou 20 definitely

a theory on mima: in life she was an actual witch who practiced black (“evil”) magic. since this took place in a period where people feared and hated magic mima was burned to death with no means of escape and haunted her execution location. eventually, people stopped believing in her so she faded to gensokyo. and because of her death she desired revenge against humans.

Plot twist, zun is rebooting the series again on Linux os, and mima will finally return

"It's more of the fact that ZUN doesn't know what to do with his older characters and how to incorporate them into the storylines of the Windows game" --> this exactly I believe is the reason as to why so little of the PC-98 casts ever got into the Windows games... I mean look, even Alice and Yuuka, very little were even mentioned about their previous meetings when they were reintroduced in the Windows games. ZUN seriously needs 'that' spark of brilliance to reintroduce the old cast I believe

I finished the third game like a day ago and this was one of my favorite themes from that, mostly because the beginning blasted me with Cave Story vibes (even though this game came out first!!)

Gotta love how everyone has high hopes for touhou 20 being the return of lunarian lore or Makai or Mima only going off 20 being a huge landmark for the series but in reality not only does ZUN not care about any of that but he's so fucking drunk that you might ask him in a couple of years time about Marisa and he'd actually go like "Who?"

I was thinking about a possibility where the zun made the 18 game, with a story where the characters disobey the speel card rule, it would be a good one as there would be a chance for the classic PC-98 characters to reappear

Ah, the origin of everything, i'm never gonna have enough of the PC-98 era, is so beautiful and i might won't have nostalgic feelings since i don't have much time since the first time i played a Touhou game but still, is amazing

And then Yuuka appeared as a background character in HM. Also she actually appears semi-frequently in the mangas. She never _does_ anything, but she does appear. The reason she was introduced in PoFV according to some sources is apparently that Touhou was ending, so it makes sense that ZUN would bring back an old character for the grand finale including pretty much everyone he could think of.

This song has the best intro in any Touhou song IMO

As she's been an evil spirit for quite a long time, her evilness has completely fallen off from her. Now she enjoys her days making fun of Reimu. She is like the deity (evil deity) of the Shrine by now, but her personality is more human-ish than human. As strange things are happening again, she is looking forward to more upcoming events. ZUN's comment about the track: "For those who don't know Mima, she was the last boss from the last game, Story of Eastern Wonderland. This time, she's not a boss or anything, just a normal character, so I tried not to make her theme song too badass... You know, I just don't get her personality at all. (Even though she's my own character *sweatdrop*) Well, what about the song. The melody for the main chorus part is very simple, but feels really nice... Doesn't it? (Maybe because it's simple?)"

Valve would sooner make Portal 3, Team Fortress 3, and Half Life 3 than ZUN would put Mima in another game. He’s quite determined in that aspect.

She's a unique case, I think she looks human to distinguish herself from the other ghosts, Yuyuko being the ghost princess. There is also a difference between ghosts and phantoms; ghosts were once living, while phantoms are born like that from the start, much like poltergeists.

Maybe mima is the friends we made along the way

Would be epic if somebody went datamining the newer touhou games and found cut content or beta stuff that has art of or at least mentions Mima. That would mean ZUN is working on something with Mima, lol. Still, even if we don't get Mima, this entire franchise is still amazing, from music to story to character design, everything is just really interesting and awesome.

I feel like ZUN played a lot of Romancing Saga when making the themes for the first half dozen Touhou games or so.
