This was really great lyricism and really tied to everything in the rest of the album! I went into some possibilities at the end. Just my initial opinions! Could certainly change and would love to know your thoughts! What are your favorite lyrics?

The Scooter situation is extra sad cus it wasn't just about the song ownership, but also the betrayal. Taylor knew Scott Borchetta since she was 14, she was the main reason for the label succeeding (Borchetta worked for Universal Records at the time and said he could help her get signed there or she could wait a few months for him because he was starting his own label. She decided to wait, became his first signing, and that label became Big Machine Records). She danced with Borchetta at awards shows, covered a song on the Fearless album because it was by his favorite band (she has songwriting credit on it cus the band was impressed by how much she changed the arrangement), wrote a different song for him and the rest of her crew, did skits together in her old myspace vlogs, etc. He was basically family to her, so she never thought that he'd ever sell her music to someone she's cried about to him. I guess there really are no friends in business.

@@esraherbst7582 Yes, you've misread my comment. Scott Borchetta is the one who did all those things with Taylor, which is why it is sad that Scott would sell to Scooter. Scooter and Taylor's main interactions were him being involved in posts bullying Taylor on social media, attempting to ruin her reputation in the wake of the kimye situation. Thus, Scott being basically family to her then selling her work to one of the few people he knows has caused her mental anguish is very twisted.

I think you’re right about this song very much being about her legacy, I’ve been a fan of hers for a really long time and she’s always been very focused on the idea of how she will be remembered and the future/past from when she was a teen. So I think this song really sums up the whole album and is the true final track. the betrayal of having her masters, her life’s work and legacy sold by someone she trusted to someone she hates was really devastating and that’s the major heartbreak she’s channeling in the album. But in this it’s like she’s choosing to hold on to what she does have that she values, her art, her love and some privacy even though she will always be sad about it and she will always have chaos in her life (the calamitous love and insurmountable grief). I think the red rose line is also a reference to Joe and their love. Over a couple of albums she’s made a lot of references to herself being cold/blue at the time he came into her life and they dated for 8 or 9 months before the media found out. So even in the worst conditions they thrived in privacy.

One of my favorite double meanings in the song is “tell me what are my words worth” in reference to the poet Wordsworth! Tay had a friend named karlie kloss, they were incredibly close until around the masters situation. Whether they were romantic or platonic, it's clear their relationship meant alot and was important. I think the twitter line is in reference to the pics/videos someone posted of them drunk at a concert where it looks like they're kissing. I could write an essay about this song and the meanings I have associated with it. The imagery, metaphores. Ahhhh i love it And I loved yor analysis. My favorite lyric is the one about wisteria growing over her bare feet. Expecially how it plays with the "death" imagery of the whole song :eulogy, poets went to die, frozen ground. It makes me think about nature growing over a tombstone in a cemetery. But also about escapism, stillness, peace. It's so enjoyable to think about the different interpretations, right or wrong. Ps. Still waiting for you to watch Miss Americana, to get to know the real Taylor better ❤️.

Love this song and your analysis! I feel like I'm back in one of my English Literature classes reading the comments, haha. There's also the juxtaposition of the Romantic era and modern-day terms and imagery. The words "cell phones" and "Tweet" seem out of place, reflecting the line: "I don't belong here and, my beloved, neither do you." But then she pairs the word "cell phone" with "hunters," which can be perceived as a very "back-in-the-day" primal term. And "tweet" is a homophone, as it can also signify a bird chirping, which does fit in with the nature theme of this song. So much lamenting and nostalgia. One of my faves as well!
@andreahan2266

I love your analysis of this song! Another interesting layer around her music being her elegies, is that she’s grieving the loss of her music being taken from her. I think it’s about her grief over losing control of her life’s work, her music is her legacy, but its been stolen.

I loved your reaction to the song and how you explained things. There's something you said in your AFTER REACTION that stuck with me. You mentioned Taylor references wanting to be eulogized and leaving her legacy behind (like the poets) and writing in the same location. Well, this is where I got to thinking: What if she's also hinting spending the rest of her life (with her boyfriend of 3-4 years) and enjoying what her work has done in the world. And to me, connecting it to her *Netflix documentary, she may feel that her time is running out in making good art. On her documentary she said: "It's a lot to process because we do exist in this society where women in the entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35 (she's 30 right now)...This is probably one of my last opportunities as an artist to grasp onto that kind of success. As I'm reaching 30, I'm like, 'I want to work really hard while society is still tolerant me being successful.'" So there's a lot to unpack here, I think. I don't know if she ever imagined the magnitude of success that her Folklore album is having, but I believe she realizes that she can either live a normal life after a few years in the spotlight or that she can find other facets to her skills that she can branch out and still be successful in her art by old age. Just thinking here, haha. I enjoy your channel! :)

Love your reviews! I think Taylor's unsurmountable grief is not just about Scott Borchetta anymore but her grief of dealing with her Mom's breast cancer over the last several years, and recently her diagnosis of a brain tumor. I don't think anyone has been talking about it because it's just so sad but it happening in Taylor's world right now and I think about it sometimes when I listen to Folklore (or her song "Soon You'll Get Better" on her Lover album). I hope it has helped her release some of her sad emotions! I know her fans really appreciate her giving us this album at this hard time in our country and around the world. Windermere is a lake in England's lake district and the peaks are it's surrounding mountains or Fells as we call them here, many poets found and still find inspiration in the areas beauty..Taylor after a visit here can count herself part of that literary list with this beautiful song...

Hey, Sher! If u see this, I def recommend Taylor's poems she wrote for her Reputation Magazine if u haven't read them already. They're so sad, and beautiful and powerful.

I think she is being literal in referring to where all the poets went to die. If you check out each of the 'Lake Poets' listed on Wiki, a good half of them did die while they were still living in the Lake District. It often says 'Cumbria' for their place of death and burial.... that is the Lake District. I think she is also meaning those poets who lived out most of the remainder of their life in Cumbria.

i think maybe the lyric “i don’t belong and my lover neither do you” could be about taylor realising she couldn’t handle all the fame and attention when she was at her peak, and she wants to protect her boyfriend from it all (the media, tabloids, ect). or it could be her contemplating if she should break up with him, as she doesn’t want him to have to deal with constant public scrutiny

the way you associated the tweet line to be about the fallen tree thing is funny because Taylor actually captioned one of her instagram photos with something similar a while back

I think she's being literal about the lakes where the poets went to die. That she's saying they become part of the natural landscape (like wisteria growing over her) and they're so deep in nature (mentally if not literally) that no one thinks about them or notices when they die and become part of the dirt that feeds the plants.

Tay used that tree-fallinh quote as an isnta caption a few months prior to folklore's release. It was a hint

Based on your reactions to the folklore album I'm inclined to suggest Sing to Me Instead by Ben Platt it has some great lyrical moments and is a well-structured album if you are looking for more things to react to :)
