In this video I explain how to look after a Poinsettia plant throughout the year. I start the video in spring with pruning and end the video in December with the plants back in their full winter colours. The video follows two of my plants as they are pruned, fed and brought back into flower over the course of six months.

It was scary when you pruned them down to stems, but wow they grew back so beautiful. I'm surprised you didn't show us how to propagate the cuttings. That's what I plan to do with my poinsettia.

I’m glad someone from uk 🇬🇧 is showing us how to keep these plants alive and if you can do it in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I’m sure watching your video here in Staffordshire I can do it too . Thanks for the video. I’ve been watering mine daily only using about 140 ml of a mixture of rain water and banana peel I’ve just thrown the banana peel in a bucket of rain water and left it for 1 week

If they survive the first few weeks then you should be able to keep them going all year. The biggest issue is that most plants have been subjected to cold temperatures when transported to the shops and once they experience cold shock they usually die. The best way to avoid this is to buy them from garden centres as soon as they appear in November. If they have cold shock you will know within a week as the leaves will rapidly start falling off.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed my video, good luck with your Poinsettia, the hardest part is keeping the plant alive for the first two months, if it can survive the first two months in your house it should last for years. Many plants get cold shock when being delivered from the nursery to the shops and so they often die a few weeks after purchasing. If your lucky enough to get one that hasn't had cold shock then it should last for many years. My oldest plant is about 5 years old.

Thank you so much for this informative video! I loved the time lapse part too. I've been on my own poinsettia journey the last couple years after having mine for about 4 and not even knowing until i researched that yes they do return to the red color after the first year you buy them, and also that you have to make a conscious and dedicated effort to do so...also that they're native to Mexico or something...so much i didn't know 😅. My leaves are turning now and it's a fun experiment!

Well done for keeping your plant alive for so many years, knowing that they are native to Mexico is key to understanding what type of conditions they need to thrive. They need cooler dry weather in winter, but not cold, and warm to hot temperatures in summer with plenty of water, but not waterlogged, with good light levels year round.

Thank you so much for this explicit beautifully explained poinsettia from Thailand. I bought over 300 plants for my house and they all looked very Christmasy. They are grown in the north east of Thailand..costing about 4.5 US $ each. I have done a lot of cutting propagation as well…

If you keep the plant big, they will be very woody and can be planted outdoor as a tree in many parts of Portugal and Spain

Thank you so much for all the detailed knowledge! I’m trying to keep my current poinsettia from this past season. I thought it might have gotten cold shock and was dying, but I tried taking care of it anyway and I’m starting to see some new growth on it!! Great vid thanks!

Thanks, that's great, if you have new growth then it has survived any cold shock and should grow well for you over spring and summer. They are surprisingly easy to grow if you can get them to survive to spring. The biggest challenge is avoiding cold shock and keeping them alive over the cold dark winter months.

@@Gardeningat58N just wanted to drop an update on how my poinsettia was doing. It was growing well after I cut it back as you showed. I ended up repotting it in a slightly bigger pot (turns out it was starting to get pretty root bound!) It is flourishing in the new pot and just keeps growing! Hoping I can get some blooms come the season, for now I am enjoying watching it grow!

@@Gardeningat58N hi another update 👍 I’ve been giving my poinsettia the darkness treatment in a box now (live in an apartment so there wasn’t any other options for avoiding the artificial light haha) I do see some red developing now! Very exciting! Few things I’m unsure of. I should keep feeding the plant now, correct? But I was curious, when do I stop giving it the darkness treatment and stop feeding it? I remember you don’t feed them while in the bloom phase. Thanks again!!

This is very tricky if not impossible to rebloom in a regular home environment, even when it does rebloom the bracts never look as good as the store sold ones which are properly treated.

Someone gifted me a poinsettia this year and it was lush for about a day and then started to die back. It's just about stopped dying (I think) with about 4 flowers left on it, might try a gentle prune when the weather warms up in the spring. It has some dying stems on it at the moment. Should I cut them back to where it's healthy still or just let them die off on their own? Such a helpful video! Thanks for taking the time to put it together!! 😊

Yes cut back the stems if they are definitely dead and wait until you see some new growth starting to appear before cutting back any the healthy stems. I'm glad you found my video helpful :)

QUESTION: I have a yellow (not red) poinsettia. Once it goes into dormancy and comes back out for next Christmas, will it still be yellow? I never saw this color before so I don’t know its nature. Thanks!

That was a very educational video. It makes me want to try and see if I could get mine to rebloom again next year. I was gifted a very small pointsettia growing in water, no soil at all. It's about 6-8" inches high. I wonder how long it will continue to thrive like that? Do you have any of the "mouse ears" pointsettia there in Scotland? I guess they've been around for some time, but I only saw them here this year in SE PA. They are so cute too. Your plants are beautiful. I especially liked the two-tone one. Thanks for your inspiring show.

Thanks, It's possible to grow it in water, but unless you grow it hydroponically with the correct nutrients and oxygenation it will probably only last a few months even with regular water changes. If you want it to flower next year your best carefully transferring it to soil, although because it often dies when transferred to soil I would enjoy it for a few weeks before trying. I've not seen the mouse ear variety before, it looks interesting. There are many different varieties I've seen about 10 in Scotland, most vary in colour, but there is also one that has spiky looking leaves called 'Holly Berry'. I made a video called 'Poinsettia facts' where I show a range of different varieties.

It’s November in Canada and unfortunately I only just stumbled on this awesome video. Could the beautiful red colour still be possible throughout my plant if I didn’t know to do any of the steps mentioned but my poinsettia plants are tall and green with 1 pod of leaves turning red?

Yes it can still turn red, Just make sure it gets plenty of winter sunshine and don't let it have any artificial light so that the short days of winter trigger it into going red. I find that often it turns red just after Christmas unless you are careful to give it shorter days as early as September.

I have white poinsettia that I got this past Christmas I pruned it when I saw the stems turning black and kept whatever healthy stems were left it’s still blooming and growing new growth but I’m scared to prune it more I’m scared to touch it but it’s just 3 stems now I wish I could get it back to how I bought it but I’m scared to kill it off

Thanks for the excellent video! The base stems of my poinsettia are looking grey, similar to yours at 4:55 but greyer. Is it ok to hard prune them? Or should I prune at the height where they're still green?

Yes, they should still re-sprout even from the grey stems, if you look carefully above the leaf scars you should see dormant buds waiting to grow.

They do better in their own pots, but wait until spring as they will tolerate the damage to their roots better when there is higher temperatures and light levels.

I live in zone 9. We have had a much much hotter summer this year and my poinsettia is dying. I have had this plant since December and it had been doing well. Do you recommend I bring it inside my house to save it?

They are normally ok with high temperatures, although if you had temperatures over 40C (104F) then it may need to go to a shady location or inside until the temperatures cool down. Make sure its well watered when the temperatures are high.

Did you took them outside for summer growth or did u kept them inside all summer long? Because most times the major problems of taking them outside are scales whitefly and other mites.

I keep my plants indoors all year round because the climate here in north Scotland is too cold and windy for them. We only have a few weeks each summer when the temperature is warm enough for them.

I've always had poinsettia's This is the first time where one is still growing & showing red after 8 months. Before I had to cut them down early because the red was gone by March & hope they grew right. Should I leave it alone & hope it's still going red by Christmas? I have them under grow light, leaves die but new one keep coming up, Should I cut back when all the red is gone no matter how long it takes?

Cutting back isn't necessary for flowering, but if you don't cut them back they tend to get very tall and leggy. Cutting back now would be ok, but I wouldn't leave it much later otherwise it will struggle to get to a good size in time for Christmas. What timing have you got your grow lights set up for? if it is 12 hours a day or less that might be why it kept it's red colour for longer this year.

It's for 12 hours. Surprisingly plant isn't all that leggy, it's more dense. I'll leave it for another month, then prune & hope I haven't killed it like I've with them the other years. Maybe I'll try rerooting a section too

No, with living so far north the days get short very quickly in September so as long as I have it in a room which doesn't have bright lights on in the evening it doesn't need to be covered.

@@Gardeningat58NI m here in England right now and saw some videos where they advised it covering in October for 14 hours. However, when I was in Nepal we just plant it outdoor and we never had to cover and she flowered covering the whole tree ( it was big). And the weather in Nepal is like normal summer weather in uk 😂 Pardon me for long replies. I m little talkative. 🙊 And tnx! 🍀🍀🍀🍀

@@sophiyagurungsg yes they can become small trees in the right climate, they must have looked amazing in Nepal, I've seen some large ones in Taiwan. You shouldn't need to cover yours unless it's in a room which has bright lights on in the evenings, the days in England are short enough come October. Just make sure it's in a warm sunny location, they can be tricky to get through a winter here in the UK, even some houses are too cold for them.

What do you do when the poinsettia leaves all fall off and only has red blooms? Can we save it?

Sounds like your plant is struggling, but if it still has some red leaves then it can recover. Keep it in a warm sunny position and wait for new green leaves to appear. Once it's growing well you can then prune it.

They only bloom when the days get shorter in autumn, in autumn you need to make sure it gets 10 hours of light a day or less, if you live near the equator or if it is in a room with strong artificial lighting it can confuse the plant and it won't change colour and flower.

@@Gardeningat58N one I grew for about 4 years. Reached about 6 ft tall, then some idiot sprayed weed killer on it. I had to trim 1/2-2/3 of it off. I sit them outside in the late spring and summer until fall. They grow quick. Moved it indoor in the winter. They did it again the following summer and it eventually died. When it was 6 ft tall, one leaf turned red. North eastern USA. I have a new one and a branch broke off and I’m rooting it in water. It is spouting new leaves. The main plant is losing its leaves already hopefully it will last. … do you fertilize yours? Thanks

Why are we getting a sticky substance below the plant

Sticky substances underneath a plant or on the leaves is usually caused by insects feeding on the plant. Have a close look and you should be able to find them on the stems or underneath the leaves, some can be very hard to see such as scale insects or mealy bugs. Once you find them you can then look up the best way to deal with them.

I would recommend twice a month with a liquid feed throughout spring summer and autumn. Once the colour has developed in late autumn I wouldn't feed them again until you see new growth in spring. If using slow release feed then use it once in early spring and another time in midsummer.
