Poinsettias are the ultimate Christmas plants. Sadly, most of these lush greenies with bright red bracts end up in trash bins after the festive season is over. In this video, I talk about what to do with poinsettias after Christmas if you want to keep them alive and well year round and get them blooming next winter.
Frankly speaking, the instructions I’ve seen online are quite confusing, so I made a clear-cut yearly schedule for you that shows how poinsettia plant care should change seasonally. I also show how to do the key steps to get your plant bloom in winter. Pruning in March, re-potting in May, and the trademark “short days/long nights” technique are all covered.

Wow! Thank you for info. I found 2 beautiful tall Pointsettas in Dec '22 outside of a dumpster. The price tag was still on them and they had cost $50 each!! I took them home and followed directions on RU-vid and it is now July 23 and they are thriving. Definitely did not over water them and put them in corner with no direct light in jan, feb ,march and mid april. Then put them on kitchen counter but no direct light. They look great and are now outside for the summer. Thank you for these clear instructions. One thing for sure, they do not like too much water. The plant lady knows all!❤

If you have drainage and are putting one pot into another you can actually put the stones in the bottom of the larger pot instead of the small pot. Thus leaving more room in the smaller pot for the plant to form new roots.

I received a LARGE poinsettia 2 1/2 ft. In my apartment I have other plants competing for light. After watching your video. I’m overwhelmed to think I won’t be able to care for this beautiful plant

They are REAL pain in the neck. Finicky doesn't even come close. I had 2 very nice poinsettia from Christmas 2022 that I was able to keep alive and relatively thriving until November 2023 when l put them in the dark for 16 hrs/day so they would sprout red leaves for Christmas. Sadly the spare water closet I put them in was too cold and they lost almost all their leaves. A few new red leaves have sprouted but my patience is wearing thin. They drop leaves so easily 😢

Thank you for this video! I received two of the most beautiful poinsettias I have ever seen. I was hoping there was a way to keep them. Your tutorial was very easy to watch and learn from. Even if they are a bit finicky to care for I’m I’m willing and excited to try it out. 🤞they will come back.

I took mine out and repotted it in a large pot ( 20 inches). I didn't trim off the bracts yet. It's outdoors getting bright filtered light. I have another one ,so I will try your method. Thanks .

My plant still is blooming and healthy with new growth. It's June so I expected it to start being droopy and it is not. Should I cut it back anyway?

Great video! I used to leave my plant outside all year long in the UK and it was thriving. But again England doesn’t have much sun throughout the year, so that might be the reason. 🪴

Can I ask, what happens if you didn't prune it in March? I have a Poinsettia that i've had since Xmas. It's been doing really well (first time ever) without me really touching it much, but now we are in June and it's getting very hot I noticed it looking a little more droppy so thought I would look into how to care for it and of course everyone says about pruning it back. Would it be too late to prune it now, in June? thanks :)

please try to increase humidity around plant and exclude and possible exposure to drafts. You can also talk to botanist experts in our app as ask them specific questions about your plant, and receive a very in depth custom solution to your problem 😊

You will of course need a bigger box since the plant will have grown a lot and have lots of leaves.
